Even when I attended LWMA their were a few kids that liked the school. There are two reasons for this.
The first reason is that they have been so institutionalized and indoctrinated (brainwashed) into this program, that they don't want to leave. This also happens in state prisons.(it needs to be noted that LWMA is a prison. Most of these kids aren't there by choice, and they have no personal freedom whatsoever.)
The second reason is because they have moved up in rank, and they enjoy the extreme power that they have over their peers. This is probably the most common reason. This is the most power that they will ever have in their lives. Adults don't wield this much power over other adults.
I am so sorry that you cannot seem to understand that the way things are at LW now are not what you are saying. You don't go there and haven't for the past 25+ years and you don't have a child there. I, however, have two children there and what you are saying is simply not true.

When you were there, was there a large parent involvement? We have a huge amount of parents that are involved in the school and that are there. We have relationships with the teachers, staff, TAC's, administration, etc. We can contact them all 24 hours a day.

When you were there, did the student body have cell phones? All of the boys have cell phones there. They contact us parents daily!

When you were there, did you go on snow skiing trips? Canoe trips? Trips to colleges? Our kids do all of these things.

When you were there, did you have pizza parties? Halloween parties? Christmas parties? Valentine's Day parties? Easter parties? Our kids do all of these.

When you were there, were you allowed to take college classes? Our kids have dual enrollment and take clases toward their college degree.

When you were there, was the board of trustees interactive with the parents? Ours is. They include us in things. I was personally iin attendance of the interviews that were held for the new president of the school.

I do not know how things were in the PAST, but I do know how things are in the HERE AND NOW and they are not as you are saying. Perhaps you should come to Military Day and observe some of the things that LWMA now is doing. You have to understand that we have a good school and my boys are not the only ones there by choice. I think you would be surprised at how many boys are there by choice and like the school. It's a large percentage of the boys and not only that, but the boys that are not there by choice, a huge amount of them end up liking it.

Several of us parents take a carload of boys home with us on the open weekends and they all have a great time. Things are great! I am sorry you choose to not accept that.

I believe that EVERYTIME a fight or assault occurs at Lyman Ward, that results in an injury that requires medical attention, the police or child protective services need to be called in to investigate. This is the reason that the abuse at the school has continued for so long. The leadership at LWMA has been covering it up, by not reporting it to authorities.

There have been reports of broken bones, and many other injuries. I personally saw a kid get his teeth knocked out by another cadet when I attended LWMA. I also saw a kid pass out from being choked. I was knocked out a few times from being punched in the face, and almost had my arm broken from being thrown to the floor.

Its clear that they aren't concerned about the safety of these children! Even 25 years ago, there has always been parents like Ms. Knapp above, that will defend this school. I believe that many of them just don't want the burden of raising kids....Especially troublesome kids. Why would any loving parent send their kids to school here, with all of the bad stuff in the media about it? Search the Internet for Lyman Ward Military Academy abuse.

I personally know Ms. Knapp and am very offended that you would insinuate that she doesn't want the burden of raising kids. She loves her sons very much and makes huge sacrifices in order to send them to Lyman Ward. Furthermore, she visits the school multiple times per year, even during the middle of the week and on closed weekends.

"Jonney" I am sorry your experience 25 YEARS AGO was so bad. You should come visit the school now and take solace knowing that things have changed for the better.

Yeah, news articles from seven years ago concerning events that occurred over twenty years ago (Walt Meyer) and claims that were only alleged nine and ten years ago (Michael Miller) which were later dropped certainly reflects how things operate in 2012. Once again, I challenge you to visit Lyman Ward and see for yourself. The faculty, staff, and cadets have nothing to hide. Go look for yourself!

Or you can just continue using outdated information and make a fool of yourself.

I went to lyman ward in the 6&7 grade. They beat me, stole my stuff, charged my parents for things i diddnt buy, and more. The leaders hit me and whiped me across the back with belts, i was forced to smoke a whole pack of cigarrets by my tac officer, and they refused to let me see a docter at any time

They HAVEN'T changed! We are still hearing the same horror stories posted on the Internet about this school. Its being covered up. Even when I attended LWMA, there were people like you, telling parents that that stuff (brutality and assaults)don't happen anymore at LWMA. They said all of that ended in the 60's and 70's. Today, they are telling parents that all of that stuff ended in the 80's and 90's. They need to come up with a different cover story!
This is how the military operates. Everything involves lies and cover-ups to protect the leadership in power. They use other cadets to do the assaulting, because they are to young to be prosecuted for it.
The military is very cowardly in how they operate. Two of the values that they claim to teach at LWMA is honor and accountability, yet you aren't going to see any of this in a military environment. If they really believed in accountability, then Jenrette would be held accountable for what is going on at this school! And it surely isn't honorable or brave, for cadet leadership to sucker punch other kids while they are standing at attention, and aren't in a position to defend themselves from a blow.

Lots of misinformation in some of these post. My son goes to school there and we talk to him every day. He reports nothing that doesn't go on in every school in America and certainly doesn't report anything as bad as some of the stuff being mentioned here. He is well taken care of and I know for a fact that he is cared about more than he was at his huge public HS. I also know that I love my son more than my own life and it was hard letting him go there but he really wanted to go. Has it always been easy for him? no. Has he been homesick? yes. Has he been abused? No way. Are his grades better than ever? absolutely. Also, his cousin is the Sheriff of Tallapoosa County and we checked with him before sending him there and got his affirmation that it was not a dangerous place.

I have no idea what it was like years ago but if it was half as bad as being reported here he would not be there and I am sure if it was he would tell us. He does not have to go there. Oh....and for the guy who said they wouldn't even get you medical attention....my son is in the ER at this very minute with kidney stones. LWMA drove him to Russell Hospital in Alex City because that's where his grandparents live. They are with him right now along with a representative of the school.

I went awol from lyman ward about 6 days ago. I snuck in a phone as a scrub and got a friend who was a freshman at auburn to pick me up in the middle of the night. Partied in Auburn from Thursday to Tuesday. Went to the football game, partied at sigma, got to see gorilla zoe in concert, funneled pink pantie dropper ect.. it was str8 as fuck..Lyman Ward unenrolled me after being gone 24 hrs. Finally talked to the folks who thought i was starving in the woods and they said if I agreed to tell them where i was they wouldnt make me go back to Lyman Ward ever again. So I told them, got picked up, and now im getting ready to go back to school at Huntsville High tomorrow... back to the way things should be. Spent about 7 days in hell and 5 days in heaven. Longest week ever

F**k that place. It took me three months to get kicked out of that place. I had the sh-t kicked out of me by alumni behind locked doors more than a few times. They all deserve to be locked away, starved, and beaten senseless with clubs. I tried to run away once by just walking out. After they found me and returned me, they installed cameras in the dorms to make sure it wouldn't happen again. After that, I tried to set a trash can in the hall on fire in the middle of the night by biting the plastic from a paper clip, making a prong by putting foil round the other end and holding it with a rubber band, and then lighting my can of brasso on fire by inserting the paperclip in a light socket, holding it with my hand in a sock, and proudly admitted to my efforts to burn the building down when everyone was brought out and questioned in hopes to get kicked out, but they still kept me. I then had tried to run away again by tying bedsheets together and tying one end to the bed and the other to my backpack, lowered it down the window and then climbed down. However, as soon as I hit the road, I was stopped by a patrolling officer and then brought back. I had to tried to run to the woods when he stopped his car, but it was dark and I tripped over a ditch and the officer jumped on me and cuffed me. Finally, on an AFI inspection day, when we had to wear our white uniforms, I hacked my arms up with a razor that I had to bite the blades out of and bled all over my stupid outfit. They had me sent to a nearby hospital where they told me once I left that I was going back to LWMA. I told the hospital that if they sent me back, I was just going to keep pulling the same sh:t. Time after time, I rejected their demands and took their punishments only to try my hardest to return them with equal difficulties as they were providing me. I'm sure the stories of my efforts to run away and get kicked out are still being told today. It's been ten years since then. I finally was sent away after I had cut my arms up and bled all over my uniform during the army federal inspection. I have no respect for those fu*ks. They are all f^cking scum. My dorm drill leader, whatever his "rank" is, or whatever the f*ck you call him, in my book he's a [email protected] waste of existence of a human, probably pissed at his own life since his fatass hasn't seen his dick since his children were sucking him off infront of a his bedroom mirror, he had grabbed me by the neck once and held me against a wall as he punched the sh/t out of my stomach just because I didn't f*cking want to carry around half a tree trunk he ordered me to take with everywhere I went after I punched a kid in the mouth during a drill one day for talking sh't to me and insulting me in formation and no one would f*cking tell him to shut up, instead just let him ridicule me at his own leisure, so I walked up to the f*cking flea brained douchebag spoiled brat and knocked him the f*ck out right there. I took tons of abuse from those brainless f*cking sheep. I don't even care to talk about the other things they did to me. That place deserves to be burnt to the ground, and the alumni deserves to be run over by greyhound buses several times. They don't deserve death. They deserve to be kept alive and tortured for f*cking decades. If I ever see them again in this life, I will certainly turn the tables and cut off their f*cking testicles with safety scissors.

Please mind my french, and expletives. I still feel such an anger when I think about that place, even after ten years. Some of the things they did to me are just unmentionable on a public forum, and as you can see . . I am pretty brutal with my honesty and openness. Hell has a place for every one of them. I'm sure some of your kids don't tell you what happens to them because of how horrendous they are to some of the students. It's barely even a school. You're basically putting your kids in the service and sending them to Iraq as Prisoners of War. I can only hope that they get what they deserve, and that's to be raped in the ass by every seven foot, 300 lb black guy in a federal penitentiary.

As I've told everyone else, please come visit campus again. You don't even have to announce when you're coming. Just show up one day and come see how things have changed for the better.

I attended LWMA only a couple of years after you, and even by then, things had begun to change.

If there was any sexual abuse I was not aware of it. Some of the accusations Iíve read on this board seem to be exaggerations by people who seem to be a few brews short of a sixer.
Here's LWMA as I experienced it.
I'm pretty sure I was sent there because I needed a good ass kicking and that's exactly what I got. It made me tougher and a better person and I'm glad I lived through it. Few people got their butts kicked as bad as me(Except possibly Chaz Crowder), I had my head busted open and bled all over the Charlie company hall and had to get stitches(Boudreaux). I had my scalp torn open on another occasion by a biting Mexican(Espanosa). I was burned with a cigarette (vesterfelt) and cut on my arm by my roommate (Crosby). And cut on the head another time resulting in bleeding when I threw my hat on the parade field and my platoon leader hit me with it(Farber). The upper classmen with rank were bullies of the highest order (Russell, Camara, Swann, Kelly, Vaughn)I'm glad I had the opportunity to learn to deal with people like that. As a somewhat sheltered kid I didnít really know how to stand up for myself, but had a mouth that tended to get me in trouble. LWMA fixed that and for that I am thankful. The world is filled with bullies and A-holes and places like LWMA prepare kids like me to deal with that.
I never did conform or fall into line during my time there, about a month before the end of the year I got sent to Bravo Co. so I wouldn't get killed in Charlie. I walked into Col Jenrette's office out of uniform and tld him that I was not going back and that I told the chain of command to F off. He told me that he had failed with me and that I was one of his biggest disappointments. He moved me to laid back Bravo and told me no one would bother me anymore. I don't think he failed to make me a better person, he only failed to break me and make me conform, but LWMA taught me what I'm made of and that if one of the most notoriously brutal schools in the country can't break me then nothing can. I take pride in that.
So for all you whiners bitching about trauma and scars seriously, suck it up! As Nietzsche said "That which does not kill you makes you stronger".
Thank you LWMA
