"Zero motivation to do anything for themselves"....." too may are there by choice"......"lazy drunken bums".....lovely snetiments!!!
Of course there are people who take advantage of the system but there are three catagories that make up a HUGE percentage of the homeless population that maybe you should think about. Just for a second turn of the "they are all just lazy bums" filter and think about: 1. Veterans make up somewhere north of 25% of the homeless population. Some come back with PTSD or come back to forclosure etc. They also come back to a VA that has done very little for them in terms mental or overall health. Are these people there by choice....Lazy bums....zero motivation???? 2. People with addiction issues make up a large percentage of homeless. I won't go on about this issue but I will say that if you have been forced to be involved in this issue through a close friend of family member you will understand that if unchecked it will lead a person to the street or even death. I have been unfortunate enough to watch a person who greduated third in his lawschool class and was a partner at a firm end up on the streets. 3. A large percentage of the momeless have mental illness. Is Metcalf who is a schizophrenic a lazy bum...there by choice?? I am not some "throw money at every problem" liberal. I agree that our welfare system has hurt as many people as it has helped. Some of the comments in this thread ignore the facts. It seems like to many here homeless = bum...period!! Sorry but it ain't that simple!! |
