Nancy Lanza, the mother of the Sandy Hook shooter, was in the process of having her son committed to a psychiatric facility when he went on the mass shooting spree, a lifelong family acquaintance told Fox News. Full story: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/19/adam...

That's an interesting Story. Yet, it has two conflicting Reports in the same article. Maybe, the Police will know if either One of them is true before long. They can have the Psychiatrist's Records subpeoned and find out, once they find out who the Psychiatrist is, if there is one...and I'm sure they will do both, if the Stories are true.

I don't know if it's true or not but it's made the news everywhere.

Sad that all of us are fixing to lose a big part
of our gun ownership rights because this woman was
stupid enough to give her mentally ill son access
to firearms thinking it would help build his
character and give him confidence they said on the news. Unbelieveable.

That was one big mistake that also ended her life.

You're right, MV, and that wouldn't bother me so badly. But, it's the Others that had their Life ended and the devastated Families that I just have a very hard time dealing with...all because of HER mistake! And she was supposed to be an intelligent Woman! I just can't make any sense out of it, her actions or her Son's!

The Bigger question should be WHY are there so many more violent mentally ill people being brought into the world today ??

The bigger question is why are there so few services for the mentally ill today?
Why is it so difficult to hospitalize or get treatment?
We have made it very difficult to get people treatment before crimes happen to self or other.
We are failing miserably in our prevention efforts. We don't recognize problems before they happen, even when the evidence is in our face. It seems like it always takes a tragedy to respond. We make it incredibly difficult to get people help. We close hospitals, and then send them to outpatient mental health, where the funds are cut, and staff reduced. Why? Because we don't address prevention efforts anymore.
We are shifting responsibility for the mentally ill from the social service sector, who are skilled in providing training, to the police who provide social control.
The taxpayers are picking up the tab, one way or another, through treatment, or through jails.

That's a question that a Friend of mine and I were discussing just yesterday. Is it genetics or is it the environment they're raised in? My Friend is almost convinced that it's the home environment and the way their Parents are raising them.
I'm trying to keep an open mind, but I leaning toward it being a combination of things, including the two my Friend cited.

Because today they just let the crazies run loose back in the day they were all locked away in asylums with rubber rooms where they still should be.

I thought we were past hiding "crazy old Aunt Martha" up in the attic , away from the Public. But, I'm starting to wonder if too many Families are hiding their Mentally Ill Family Members in plain site and our society has become so "self-absorbed" that Nobody's noticing...maybe because there's so many of those Mental Ill Family Members in our Society, that they don't "stand out".

I suspect that drug use has become so prevalant in our Society, especially with our Young People, that if Anybody seems strange, we just figure they're using drugs and we look the other way and ignore it, when actually alot of them are seriously Mentally Ill and very dangerous.

really sassy, people are impacted by homes, and the community, and by their own person. It is all of the above.
When people feel hopeless and helpless, they may respond with acts against themselves or others.

Something I noticed as I went through my 20's was that the dopers look at us beer drinkers like we're the strange ones.At least the beer was legal.

Your Post makes more sense than any other reason that I've heard or read, so far.
I've said for years, that the American People, in general, just CANNOT deal with alot of stress for an extended period of time. I've noticed it for practically my entire Adult Life. We've had it so good , for so long, that whenever things get difficult, alot of People just go off the deep end and start doing crazy things. They simply cannot deal with any adversity , for very long, and it seems like it's the ones who have lived a "privileged" Life that have the most problems with dealing with any adversity for any period of time.

The guy who shot the children at Sandy Hook was beyond "help" of any kind.
He was just pure EVIL.
I really believe that any amount of medication or psychotherapy out there could not have benefited him at all.
To slaughter innocent children is beyond insane.
I'm glad the monster is dead.
May he rot in the pits of hell.
