I thought this was an acutal article...guess its a vent zone, so i agree city jobs never pay enough, that's why the get people to fill them that they know they can replace easily. The higher ups get paid more and work but goof off more also. Nothing will happen til the city gets better representation and people in the higher up positions that really care about the workers and not just themselves.

This was not an article - it was a comment! Why not names and/or positions of these folks? This "article" is merely a headline - where is a story??

Hmmm.... An executive assistant to the city manager that makes over $100,000 that also has 2 assistants making $60+ and $57+? Who's in charge here?

Why do we not give police raises? Probably because we have $437,000 a year going to city manager and his two secretaries. NO THIS IS NTO APRIL FOOLS... no just Nightmare on Main St
VALERIE SMITH CITY MANAGER OFFICE MANAGER/EXEC ASST $75,000.00
TERESA FLORENCE CITY MANAGER EXECUTIVE ASST/T/CM-D/O/GOV AF $101,000.00
CHARLES AUSTIN CITY MANAGER CITY MANAGER $161,138.64
You have to add in the 4 additional assistants that also work for the 2 secretaries you mention. Of the 4 assistants, 2 are on the list making $60+ and $57. The other 2 didn't make the list - yet. I bet they will after the other salaries are public!!!

pertaining to the Fire Department salaries....
If you compare other Fire Departments of the same size the Columbia Fire service is drastically underpaid.
Just encouraging you to do some research and get our guys a raise.

THIS IS THE MOST UPSIDE DOWN CITY ANYBODY CAN WORK FOR. YOU HAVE A NON-QUALIFIED CITY MANAGER WHO CAN'T BALANCE A BOOK IF HIS LIFE DEPENDED ON IT, MAKING 161,000. THEN WE HAVE HIS "MISTRESSES" MAKING CLOSE TO HIS SALARY. WHAT!!!

THEN WE HAVE AN INTERIM FINANCE DIRECTOR WHO DOESN'T EVEN HAVE AN ACCOUNTING DEGREE. THEN THE PREVIOUS FINANCE DIRECTOR IS STILL GETTING PAID, LIKE SHE DID ANYTHING WHEN SHE WAS HERE. HOW ARE PEOPLE HIRED OR PLACED IN POSITIONS WITHOUT THE CORRECT QUALIFICATIONS. THE CITY WILL FALL AND CONTINUE TO FALL IF THIS IS CONTINUED.

SOMEBODY HAS TO DO SOMETHINGS. GAS IS ALMOST $4 AND THE REAL HARD WORKERS OF THE CITY ARE BRINGING HOME LESS THAN $800 EVERY 2 WEEKS. I BEG OF EITHER SLED, FBI, SOMEBODY DO SOMETHING. CHARLES HAS TO BE TAKEN DOWN AS CITY MANAGER ALONG WITH HIS "BUDDIES". LETS STOP THE CROCKERY AND GET THINGS BACK IN ORDER.

Go to the forum "Columbia Releases Salary Numbers. The information you need is on this forum. I have told citizens like yourself what to do, if City Council will not ask for Austin's resignation or fire him immediately.

I wonder why the real story isn't the lack of a diverse racial hiring policy. From what I've seen while having to deal with City Offices is a total disregard for any and all EOE employment guidelines.

Have a nice day, and let the bashing and whining begin.

jank off....50,000 per year is alot of money if you know how to live within your means. NO $200,000 home, NO $45,000 truck. a man that lives a simple life can live pretty damn good on 50K. but your probably just one of the "keep up with the jones" kind of fellow.
And there are soooo many more people who work for the city who make so much less.

Amazing - time for City Manager Austin to do a reality check on what the actual jobs of the people are in the City. I know some of these people and what they do/don't do. Some salaries are in check and some are not. And take the municipal court - who haven't had evaluations/raises in 5 years....when will City Council wake up and investigate these salaries and practices? City employees are too scared to stand up for fear of retaliation. No amount of complaints, etc., will come of anything. Austin will not take a stand, City Council will follow his lead and it's a never ending cycle. Better yet, why doesn't the media investigate?
IF YOU WENT FIVE YEARS WITHOUT AN EVAL AND DIDN'T BRING IT TO ANYONE'S ATTENTION, I THINK YOUR WERE BEING IGNORANT TO THE FACT YOU NEEDED TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND DEMAND RESULTS.(EVERYONE HAS A BOSS)

It's not the City manager's job to balance the books, its the accounting/finance department's job to do that, then in turn the finance dept is to report that to the City manager...I do agree that the City is not doing their job but you have to recall their previous finance director worked in a small town in Florida and was given a job on a bigger scale, of course she was set up to fail, she lacked the experience to handle the numerous funds that are dealt with in the City. the Interim finance director does not have a degreee in accounting but she has a team of consultants that can consult her on the situation of the city. She can be a strong player in the city's effort to clean up but she will need a stronger team once the consultants leave. There has to be a total reformation of the City in order for it to run smoothly but that takes time, you can't expect it to happen all over night. It didn't take overnight for it to be such a mess that it is in now. Years of neglect is what happened, if anyone should be blamed it should be the structure of how the City was set up and if the city manager was responsible for that then yes he should be blamed but again you had a police chief doing the job of managing a city. Whoever chose to hire certain people for big positions in the City should be the one that should be outed.

I agree and am glad this information is finally available to the voters. I still think it would be worth the investment to have an accounting firm to evaluate where the spending is out of line and possible abuse of funds. If the city can afford salaries like this then it should not be difficult to afford an Accounting Firm. You have to wonder with all the other emphasis on different areas, what is being undisclosed? I think citizens might be surprised where this money is going and it is probably not just on salaries.
Wait, this info is just now available to votors--wasn't the Freedom of Information Act passed by Johnson in the '70's?

Whats the big deal, 50 thousand is not a lot of money these days, this is not the 70's. If you do a job description comparison, you will find out that these positions are still underpaid. That is why there is still a lot of city professionals leaving for the same job somewhere else that pays more....
that is a big deal when workers who have tarried and retired and still drawing a big salary taking away for others to have a job and having people take furlough days without pay. why should the people who are working to bring the money in be punished by paying there big salaries,
