The plans submitted by Wayfarer Marine by their global real estate developer owner, are an obvious ploy to milk the property for its value as a residential waterfront development; a quick sale of condos or the rights to develop and then cash out, leaving the are with one less quality employer. The only jobs the Wayfarer plan would provide are a short term construction project, commissions to real estate brokers, and then property maintenance(cutting lawns, etc.,). The owners of Wayfarer will sell out the boatyard business-turned-residential development for tens of millions, and will leave a small marina to service the ultra rich part-time inhabitants of this new gated community. Some folks say Wayfarer is a local institution, and should be permitted to survive. As far as being local, it is owned by a foreign national (someone not a U.S. citizen) who seeks to make money at the town's expense. As far as surviving, if Wayfarer took on work, instead of trying to make it appear like it is unprofitable, it would survive. Presently the boat yard is no longer Wayfarer Marine as the town has known it. If the town keeps the zoning as truly marine waterfront uses only, and the real estate developers move on to greener pastures, the Wayfarer property is sure to be used, perhaps by someone else, as a boat yard.
