Has anyone heard anything on this? I was told this was coming to the old Wal-Mart building a while back, but have heard nothing else?

That would be great but I don't think it is happening. I heard about it a while ago also but reading another post on here I heard it was shut down. Of course being that it was on here the Truth is probably somewhere in between. I would love to have them here. I think it would be great.

I can't remember which thread I read but it said something about Blann Hardware fighting it. Like I said not sure of the real reason or if that is even true.

Atwoods tried to open in Camden before but your current mayor seen to it that they didn't. Your current mayor intends to keep Camden poor in order to keep the grants coming in. In his mind, it is easier to beg for government hand-outs than it is to work towards making Camden self-sufficient and promote healthy competition amongst businesses.

International Paper was allowed to operate tax free in Camden and your mayor helped keep other jobs from coming to Camden in order to keep the average employee salary low enough to cater to International Paper. We all know how successful that was. You'd think he would have learned from that but obviously he isn't that astute.

I'm just using one of many examples that may or may not be public knowledge. He currently works behind the scenes in secret meetings and shady deals to keep his empire of government grants intact. He is not the only one.

We do not forget.

We do not forgive.

The Wal-Mart building is not for sale except for what is owed (which is a ton and yes. Wal-Mart was greedy enough to leave the building empty with that issue) and to turn a profit. If Atwoods was to even lease (which is a lot of money) the building in Camden...they would NEVER make a profit under those circumstances!!! If they found a better building with more business smart arrangements, then they might open one here. I never see that being a reality though!

Actually, I believe this is true. I think Claybaker's excuse was quoted as, "It would be bad for the local farmers." I don't know if that was published or not.

lol! That's what I said... How in heck would it hurt the local farmers?!?!? I didn't realize we had many to begin with. Claybaker has said some really confusing things... Like bragging at the Lion's Club about bringing 650 jobs to Calhoun County. Certainly not something the mayor of a city in Ouachita County should even be concerned with, much less be proud of.

But... you're free to your opinion, as wrong as it may be.:)

The current mayor pushed IP to shut down by wanting the taxes for the place. It wasn't in the city of Camden and the current Mayor pushed annexation of the property and even after spending a LOT of money on the plant they shut it down.
Celotex did the same....but Celotex not only shut down they razed the buildings ,meaning they took them all down, and fenced the property. I believe the current mayor tried to find way to take the property to use it........haha
But why would Atwoods come to Camden when they have one in Magnolia and Arkadelphia .....I don't think Camden could support the business.....
I was in Camden last week and had to do some business and boy in the middle of the day it's like a ghost town!!!!

Not to be mean but it is....maybe I just used to lots of activity now....but my memory doesn't recall it being that dead!!!!!

Yes. It's quite a sad situation. I don't understand why they haven't ran the man out of town on a rail.

You'll have to forgive Mr. Mundy. He's been assigned to take my place once I PCS on the 31st. He's not from here and is still being briefed on the history and goings on. I was expected him to be here tonight for a formal introduction. I also see that he's already been a little active in my absence.(Sorry folks, I've been busy.) I trust you all will give him a hard time. lol

WOW you really have to love how rumors gain speed. Atwoods had comitted to Camden, the economy tanked ! They backed off. Why wouldnt they ? Last I heard Atwoods was still interested in Camden. The only building available to them is the original wal-mart or kroger building. There has been some recent interest in the old center. It will require some pretty major repairs, that would mean some long term leases. In my opinion dont expect much to happen until after elections. People that have money tend to hold on to it in crazy times such as these. Thinking the current mayor or the owners of Blanns are keeping Atwoods out is insane and totally false.

As for IP. you can thank the EPA for their shutting down along with the decision made at headquarters for their closing. the numbers I heard was around a 3oo million investment to meet EPA standards on a facility that was 70 yeas old and labor intensive. What most people do not realize is that IP could roll back into town, build a new facility that produced the same amount of product and the level of employment would be a fraction of what was required at "our" old mill.

Times change yall. Lets not piss and moan about what was. What we have to do is find ways to create things that attract people and jobs.

Another boardwalk perhaps? The last one brought in thousands of new people.(I figured as long as we're being untruthful, I'd get in on the action.) rofl
