Bill,
I appreciate your level tone and your honesty. And I can only speak from my own experience. But I will never deny that experience just to "get along."
I have spoken many times to the parents of a real good friend who died at my feet. He did NOT support the war! He wanted only to get home, party for while then get back to school. He expected to marry his long-time girlfriend and have a family, but first we would get together and spend some time at Lake Champlain and then Erie.

His parents wanted to believe that his service was in defense of our freedoms. And who can deny them that? But the last time I spoke with them,(his father has since died) they spoke of the war in Iraq and his Dad said he was afraid that it was just as wrong-headed as VietNam. I NEVER discussed with them Jack's anger about the war.

If certain people want to declare that every death of a US soldier on foreign soil is a NOBLE death, then I am afraid we are condemning future generations to the same arrogance of power displayed by this administration. And the same cavalier attitude regarding their service.

In my opinion, the best support I can extend to our troops in Iraq is to continue to fight to get them home, before their names get etched on a wall.

Countries, boundaries, cultures, and skin colors have created conflicts and racist & discrimination within the human race. They created the term "if it's not us, who care". Well, I say "let's start caring". Let's start building our homes as well as "foriegn" people homes.

Yeah, it might be wrong to be saying "VN and Iraq wars are to defense our freedoms", but the wars are for somebody Freedom and Democracy, right? If you ask a South Vietnamese, they will say "yes, I like to have Freedom and Democracy and thank you American for a great effort". If you go ask a common Iraqi, what do you think he or she would say concerning the effort of American in their country? What about the South Korean? Tiawainese?

The Iraqis have been polled many times and the majority do NOT want us there.

As for VietNam when WWII ended Ho Chi Minh appealed to the US for assistance in keeping the French from returning. It is no secret that he penned his declaration of independence using ours as a model. There are many ways things could have evolved if the US had at least listened to Vietnamese viewponts rather than automatically siding with the French colonialists.

The communists had an idea of how the country should be ruled and so too did those who were made wealthy by cooperating with the French.

The agreed to elections could have gone a long way toward unifying the entire country. And millions of lives may have been spared. Not to mention the devastation of the countryside by bombings and Agent Orange.

Again, the military efforts are for the most part about maintaining a status quo which benefits the wealthy and the corporations. If something resembling democracy emerges well good! If not Oh well.

LOL.

I think you should go research on all the counties that went through Communism.
What did Communist Lenin and Stalin do to the Soviets in the 20's and 30's?
What did Communist Mao did to the Chinese in the 60's?
What Communist Pol Pot did to Cambodia in the 70's? BTW, "The Killing Fields" is a great movie.
What Ho Chi Minh did to North Vietnam in the 50's? Land Reform?
And than after 1975?
What about North Korea and Cuba? How did they turn out?

The Communists' idea is now in the trash.

I know an American names Kevin. I know one name Carlos. I know one name Chow. And I know one even name Mahamoud. I don't know, how do you determine that a name is or is not "an American name"?

If all immigrants are to return to their original land, this "America" continent belongs to the Native American. And you my friend, should go too.

Individuality leads to the path of discrimination. Are you in that path?

No I was talking about this:

Smedley,

I thank you for your service in Vietnam all those years ago.

As to whether you were sent there against your will, I can't do anything about that. Your complaint about (South) Vietnamese who didn't fight for their country, you are right to criticize them. We, Vietnamese people, have paid a very high price for not fighting for our own country.

If you want to comment about Vietnam, all I ask from you is a well-balance view, don’t be like those American left leaning press who had aided Vietcong by their bias reports about the war you involved many years ago

I still feel your name callings on this forum distasteful.

I think the group of people who you should be angry at is the US gov't. Instead of training the South, the US put too much effort in the war. By the time they figured it out in 1972, it was too late. And yes, by that time, the South became so corrupted because of the US money that they were not able to fight without the US soldiers.

99% of all leaders are shameless. Now, how are we going to check those shameless leaders? In VN, no body can check those shameless VCP leaders.
