I regret that the girls' reacted with violence, but I don't agree that they were "wrong." The Swartouts make a lifestyle of provoking people, getting into their faces, making them feel threatened. What is wrong is that the law doesn't adequately protect people from this sort of hate group harassment and threatening with physical violence. Fred Phelps' funeral-stalking group pulls this crap, trying to get grieving and outraged loved ones to "assault" them and then they sue or press charges against the "attacker."

You have a right to confront your accusers. VVAW and IVAW were too chicken to do that, to look people in the eye as they lied about them.
