HHhmmmm, now we find out if the price of the product is worth it. Americans will do the job if you pay them a fair wage. That is the bottom line these companies are arguing. They dont want to pay for domestic workers. So guess what, maybe consumers wont pay for your product then. Maybe its just not as worth it to them. Phillips, cry me a river of your lost business. We know full well of your setting up shop overseas and creating little "cities" under your fiefdom. Can't find some table waiters? Boo hoo.
Lost business? Hurts the economy? Stop trying to con people. It hurts YOUR business yes, but your loss is someone elses gain. For everyone that doesn't eat at your restaraunt, they just eat somewhere else. Same for the crab industry. People will eat more chicken, they wont starve. Guess what then? The economy goes on. You did not adapt, you put your self in this position by relying on imported labor, now you are paying the price. Dont ask for sympathy.

They could use the able bodied welfare recipients from places like Baltimore City. The government could easily do this by making this a requirement for receiving their food stamps, housing subsidies and misc spending money. They could even provide daily bus service.
It would help the recipients by making them more responsible, reducing their idle time, so they are less likely to "fool around" and get pregnent or get in trouble with the law.

Who was busing the tables and washing the dishes before the immigration invasion? Americans were. And they will again if you induce them with living wages.
If a business can only remain profitable by importing foreign slave labor then it would be better off going out of business.

Pay a living wage and Americans will work any job-- stop exploiting 3rd world, poor wage slaves....

Importing labor is nothing new. The Africans were brought here by what was then the big business of America which was cotton because they didn't want to pay a decent wage. Then the Chinese were brought in to build the railroads because the railroad tycoons didn't want to pay a decent wage. It just goes on and on and on.
I have come to realize that all the woes in society or almost all of them are brought on by one thing. GREED.
The housing problem was brought on by financial institutions that gave anyone a mortgage. GREED.
People buying homes they really couldn't afford. GREED.
People driving huge cars, trucks, and SUV's. GREED.
Politicians sold off our future long ago. GREED.
People are killed everyday in the name of GREED.
And they get you on the way out. Nursing homes charging 5k to 6k per month if you don't qualify for Medicaid. GREED.
And it goes on and on and on.
It's funny how we don't stop illegal immigrants coming into this country to milk the system but will block the ones who come specifically to work here legally.
We should vote every single politician out of office to send a message that we want this crap cleaned up. Do something for the people of this country not just the GREEDY.

Its nice to see that everyone here is spot on with their comments...It's not that Americans won't do these jobs, it's that they won't do them for slave wages. This is a capitalist society with an economy based on supply and demand. If you can't get workers to do the job, than you aren't offering the right wages.

There are plenty of teenagers who will need work this summer and can readily fill those jobs.
We do not need foreign workers to fill them. It is time to put an end to the nonsense of hiring others when our youths can easily fill those positions.

Oh no, employers might actually have to pay Americans a decent wage rather than Guatemalans $1.25 and hour! Whatever will they do?

My question is, why don't we pass CIR bill. So, it can solve the crisis internally, and people who already are here and have proven to be a good citizens, no criminal record. We know that only enforcement bill won't work that's why still after 2006 we are still in the same shit. Republicans don't seem to understand, they have lost their majority and soon they will loose more seats in congress and senate. Now, they are trying their best to divide democrats so they can loose their edge too. Dems. should be thankful, that they have gained some seats because of the latino votes. Now, if Mr. shuler doesn't understand that and he is risking all the support just to look good for his seat, maybe he should not become a puppet toy for republicans politics. Both dems. leader clearly says that the country needs CIR to fix problem, and thats wht the republicans are afraid of. We need to fix our immigration system and resolve the issue in humane manner for once and all.

These lazy folks cost us money money money. Now, giving billions to JP Morgan to rescue those great guys at Bear Sterns...that is a better way to spend our money! If we could just get rid of welfare.....then we could pay for more corporate bailouts (welfare)!!!!!

I totally agree with Dave above. If I read the article right, there are 69,000 job openings that should be filled with people who are on welfare, not immigrants. Welfare recipients are pathetic excuses for life in this country.

Well I guess they'll have to pay some American citizens and actual decent wage to get the job done. As it should be.

This article mixes apples and oranges, namely H2B and J1 visas.
The H2B people are the ones who return on a regular basis. The J1 folks are university students who come for a maximum of 4 months for work and travel. There are some 100,000 J1 visas each year, mainly from Eastern Europe in the summer and Latin America in the winter. The crab industry is dependent on H2B people. Ocean City's restaurant business is dependent on J1 visas, almost exclusively Russian. The H2B people will never rise. They will always work H2B jobs if they can obtain visas. The J1's on the other hand are society's future and will quickly advance to professional positions in their own country.
I know about this because over the past three years I have hosted a half-dozen J1 visa students from Russia and Poland in my home in West Virginia (at any given time we have about 50 J1 students in our county). I charge them no rent because I'm trying to help them get ahead.
Despite all the rhetoric, I can attest to the fact that they are amongst their country's best and brightest. My Russian students come from the State University of Management in Moscow. This is Russia's top economics school and is equivalent to a Wharton or Harvard MBA.
While here, they typically will work 2 or 3 jobs, 16 hours per day. They are bright and talented and embody the work ethic of America's original immigrants. These are people going places in a hurry. They are the sons and daughters every American would wish to have. The first generation to be free of communism, as their nation's econmies grow legs, I can attest that these young people from Eastern Europe will thrive and will pose a challenge to the west.
When I dropped them at the airport for their return flight, my three Russian students were dressed in t-shirts and shorts. When I arrived in Moscow to visit their families, they greeted me in snazzy business suits. Two are now professionals with Price, Waterhouse, Coopers and the third who is still a student is a management at Nestle.
I have my doubts as to whether our youth can or will keep up, or even have an interest in doing so.
So before folks knock these temporary visitors for taking jobs that Americans won't even work, just think that the person setting your table in Ocean City may be a future President of his or her country.

I agree with Scott , the problem is the companies don't want to pay a decent wage . Pay a decent wage and people will do the job . Welfare has nothing to do with it , it's simple economics

Our starting rate is $8.00/hr. This is for washing dishes, food preparation, housekeeping. We employ any American that genuinely wants one of these positions. We would much rather have domestic workers. "Can't find some table waiters?" - yeah, we have no problem there. How many people do you know that want a job for 8 months? It's not just Phillips, it's any seasonal resort town and the businesses in it. If an American worker takes the job for 8 months, what do they do for the off-season - they collect unemployment insurance - Government spent tax money. What do H2b workers do for the 4 months - they go home, enjoy their families, better their lives and wait for the next season - no government hand-outs. I don't want your sympathy, nor anyone else's. We are dynamic, we will find a way to survive. Some companies won't. This is a good program, it doesn't discourage the hiring of domestic workers-at least within Maryland. I don't know of any company that uses the program, in Maryland, that wouldn't hire an American worker first. We spend about four months each and every year complying with state and federal government requirements for eligibility to use this program. With all the fees and advertising costs that it mandates. They mandate a wage that is the industry average for that position across the state, in order that we do not undercut American workers and if it falls below our starting wage, we pay our starting wage. You don't think that we'd rather use American workers? It's not the people that use this program who are trying to pay a less that fair wage, it's the one's that are hiring illegal aliens that are undercutting the American worker. Passing an extension for this program would be better for the economy in the long term that a government issued $600 or $1200 check. Please feel free, if you want more info on this program, let me know. I'm all about the education. Scott G wrote: HHhmmmm, now we find out if the price of the product is worth it. Pay Americans a reasonable wage and they'll get plenty of workers. Sure, the price of crab meat might go up, and only the wealthy might be able to afford it, but since when is crab meat a basic necessity?
Another issue is taxation of crab meat. It's obviously a luxury product but it is not even subject to sales tax in Maryland because it is classified as a food. It should be taxes more like liquor.
