Is the increased violence in Malden due to this gang? What do you know about this gang? Are there programs in the schools to stop it? Do the Malden Police have a gang unit?
And to anyone who is in it, why? What is the draw? Why join a gang when the end result could end your life or the life of another? What could be worth that?

Because they think it is cool to act like gangsters. Not so cool now.

Concerned, my guess on your first question is no. This gang is mostly made up of high school kids and even younger. Since it's pretty much the only gang in Malden, I doubt the police have a unit for it. And no, there are no programs in the school with an anti-gang mission statement.
Curious, I've heard as young as twelve, but never older than 22.

I heard as young as 12 and some in there 40's??

This last incident on Salem Street..New news says this guy was sitting on his porch with his Brother, when the two kids or guys, whatever they were asked him for money and when he said "no" is when they started shooting. The home owner couldn't get his gun out quick enough but finall did.

So I guess we have to worry now about our houses being robbed and getting shot.

Malden has become a run down City and I blame the Mayor and the Malden Police for not caring about the Citizens of Malden.. Why do we pay damn taxes??? I think we should all email the mayor!

Curious, could you list a source, please? Cause about a year ago kids would walk by MW graffiti and laugh because it was more like a desperate attempt to seem urban and hardcore than an organized group of criminals. They even used to joke that they only had one gun among the whole "gang".

I've lived in malden and from what I can see the maplewood kids are a bunch of punks but the truth is most of them do carry guns and when you have a bunch of trigger happy reckless little kids with guns the end result is deadly such as what happened the night at that bar this past weekend. Malden is not the hood so to why these kids want to pretend to be gangsta in a pretty suburban area is beyound me. But hopefully it'll end soon before anyone else gets hurt. Grow up already !

Thanks everyone for posting what you know.

A couple of months ago a police officer told me there were "some kids who came from another town and thought they had a little gang going on..." but he sort of indicated they got broken up pretty quickly, partly due to community/beat cop policing.

Then all this violence happens back to back and I read here on topix that the 21 year old may have been involved in this Maplewood group... And God knows what the Salem street shooting was about...

Then a neighor told me her grandson was in this Maplewood group and was friends with the 21 year old that was shot. She said her family pulled him out of it and set him straight and that he's going to college now and has turned his life around.

I'm not sure what to make of this situation, but I sure hope some of these kids are waking up to what the true consequences of violence are and that carrying guns is not the answer and being a "gansta" (wanna-be or full fledged) is nothing to aspire to or be proud of. I'm with you all in saying the violence needs to stop.

And I wonder what the answer is for Malden... Should there be a program in the school to counteract this group, whatever it is? And what do we need to do? Should we be emailing city hall and/or calling our reps? I know police officers were just layed off because of budget cuts... Does that mean some of the community policing also had to go?

All I know is that I heard those shots last night and it really affected me...

I've lived in malden my whole life, while it's never been the greatest place in the world, it's worth being proud of. Malden is only a product of what YOU make of it, not the mayor or the police. Get out side and learn about your city or cheer on your football team at the next home game instead of coming home from work and turning on the tv till you fall asleep. if these kids could unite over a sense of civic pride rather than a gang this city would be a whole lot better!

This maplewood gnag is bigger than anyone really knows. Officer Kelly of the gang unit knows absolutly nothing of what goes on. Him and the principle wanna believe that its the Haitian / black / Boston kids who are the problem when in reality these kids from one of the nicer parts of malden are involved in heavy drug trafficing and gun possesion. Believe this, they shot at me outside of my house in front of my family and names were dropped and the cops did nothing. Next week one of the names that was giving to the cops was arrested in possesion of a fire arm, same kind used at the shooting at my house... kid was out on bail next day... Kelly and the rest of the malden cops are a waste of tax payers money
