I am a Pierce County resident. I have worked in the legal field for 6 years. Over the course of the past 6 years I have noticed a strong trend; the growing gap between citizens and law enforcement. Law enforcement has consistently held itself to a higher regard than the citizens they have sworn to protect. This is evident from the way charges are filed by the prosecuting authority to the way that officers interact with the population. We as citizens are partly responsible for this gap as we consistently rush to the support of these individuals.

It is appalling to me the hypocrisy floating around the media today regarding the shooting assaults and deaths of three children. The first instance was the situation in Kitsap County where a young child gained access to a weapon while at his mother’s house. This weapon was accidently discharged nearly killing a fellow classmate. The media went crazy talking about how severely this mother should be punished for allowing access to a weapon that nearly killed a young girl, and I say rightfully so. The hypocrisy begins when, a little more than a week later, a sheriff and his wife leave two children unattended in a vehicle with a loaded weapon. The older brother of the two gets this weapon and fires it, killing his sister. Instead of outrage the media rushes to support the officer. This officer and his wife are just as, if not more so at fault for their daughter’s death as the woman in Kitsap County is. In fact, they are more culpable due to the fact that 1. He is a trained law enforcement officer and should know the dangers of having a loaded weapon accessible by children. 2. He and his wife left their young children unattended in a vehicle….WITH A LOADED GUN. 3. But not for their negligent parenting and providing access to this weapon, their daughter would be alive. They should both be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law just like the woman in Kitsap County should be.

I believe in the right to bear arms. But this right should not be taken lightly. You have a duty to protect children from harm. You have a duty to store firearms in a place that cannot be accessed by children. Failure to prosecute this officer means that the laws of this State do not apply to them; that they get a special “get out of jail free” card for their unlawful behavior. It is time that we as citizens stand up and hold law enforcement accountable in the same way that they hold us accountable, and if they are unwilling to answer to the same laws they are sworn to protect than they should be removed from their position.

It is sad when a little girl who her whole life dreams of being a police officer won't even think of it now because she thinks police are evil, not helpful. She now is afraid to walk in her own town? Why because of cops in Marysville who see a teen walking, pulls over, asking questions "where are you going" "where have you been" "do you smoke" "whats in your bag" "where do you live" "why are you way over here". Teens get harrassed for walking down the street. It also sucks when a person who is law abiding, doesnt drink or do drugs, doesnt own a gun or weapon, dang near has an anxiety attack if pulled over by a cop. Why would someone that straight be freaked out? Because cops shoot people, they shoot whoever they want for bs reasons. I could be reaching for my registration and the cop decide I could be getting a weapon and shoot me. They do things like that and get away with it. Police need to be held to a higher standard, not lower. They are bullies, killers and liars. It seems it is just getting worse and nothing is being done about it.
