No 'juking': Schools fight 'sex' dance

There are 83 comments on the Chicago Sun-Times story from Sep 16, 2007, titled No 'juking': Schools fight 'sex' dance. In it, Chicago Sun-Times reports that:

“I said to them, 'If I asked you to dance at homecoming, would you expect me to juke with you?' They said, 'No, that's different.' I said, 'Well, this is different, too. We're not in someone's basement.'”

Fliers announcing this month's Evanston Township High School homecoming dance carry the warning: "salacious or inappropriate dancing" -- often called "juking" -- is outlawed. via Chicago Sun-Times

this style of dancing has been around since the early 90's, if you go to any dance club, or turn on any music channal, you will see it. It is almost like mainstream dancing is simply clothed sex. An outrage.....yes, can we do anything about it.....no! this has been around for more than a decade.

This style of dance is done in clubs by adults, not by high school or junior high kids. Schools are absolutely making the right choice in banning this form of dance. To kids it's not about a "style" of dance, it's about the feelings they get when they perform that dance, and this is totally inappropriate at that age. Kids need to learn that there are certain circumstances when they need to act more appropriate. What is done at a house party is not going to be acceptable in a more formal atmosphere like school.

I believe banning is the way to go. Kids now and days are not responsible enough to think that dancing this way is making them look bad. They are not responsible enough to realize that that is how rumors get started about them. So since they are so irresponsible we have to set rules like this in public schools. So I think it is a good idea.

I think "juke" dancing is a bit inappropriate sometimes, but not one hundred percent of it is that wrong. Yes, if your right year old daughter is trying to learn to juke then you may have to talk with her. At a school dance my junior year in high school I attended a very strict high school and for our school dances they did play some songs that you would juke to, but when a song has lyrics saying "shake it like a saltshaker," are the girls suppose to jump around or bend over and shake their behind? I think its just a change that older americans are not comfortable with and they often forget teens aren't the only people juking, many adults in twenty one or older clubs do this very same type of dancing. Lastly juking doesn't give kids feelings they don't know how to cope with, if a girl did not feel comfortable juking with you, I know she would not let a guy come behind her a juke. it also doesn't make them feel enititled to have sex with they guy or girl they are dancing with. I can say its a provocative style of dancing but many cultures have dances we think are sexual such as hula dancing and latin dancing but they have never come under such a barrage of statments like juking has.

Have anyone seen Dancing with the Star,s or You Think You can Dance, for as much of this juking dance I've seen, alot of the moves are simular to the moves of the Possadoble or that Waltz,I don't remenber that name. I agree with the young Lady from In Living Color, allow them their freedom of expression but teach the kids the proper way to do this dances and teach them self respect.

I will aditt that juking is very suggestive ...but I cant play self ritious because when I was in High School we had dances that were just as suggestive ..this was over 20 years ago ........It did not make it right ...point to be made is t4ennage danceing as always been suggestive or had hidden connotations

Yo i go to ETHS, and they're making our school look like were a bunch of sex addicts, first theres that rumor that everyone that attends ETHS has AIDS, and now this juking dance? They need to let off, b/c i know that some of these teachers be hittin up the bars and clubs and getting into it too!

Besides I believe our school should focus on more important issues such as our financial problems.

In addition, this is the second time this year our school has been on the news, atleast the first one was actually a problem.

The dance that everyone is talking about isn't really juking. Juking is a losely used term which derives from juke music in urban chicago. Juking can be any dance thats done to juke music. What they are doing is just simply grinding. Any dance in urban chicago is considered juking. There is a whole list of dances like foot working and jabing that are also considered to be juking.

All you people on here who is not from Chicago trying to express your point of view on this style of dancing need to be quiet and stay out of it. Juking,Housedancing wich is the original name, has been around since the 80's. It is not like having sex,it is no different from any other form of dance where nine times out of ten the female is shaking, popping and rolling. Chicago is getting ridiculous with trying to shut down everything thinking this will make a better Chicago, when in reality all they are doing is setting up distruction because sooner or later the youth are going to lash out. If you keep trying to stop everythingthat basically the urban people enjoy it's not going to be a good outcome in one way or another. Juking is a Chicago tradition the moves and competitiveness has been going on for centuries that's where all the the legendary house gropus come from, please don't think we are coping videos because that is far from the truth and comments like that just shows college professor and all these professional opinionators really don't have a clue all the time. Can't no book teach you how to some up JUKING. There is so much other horrible things going on Juking is the least of Chicago's worries.

The links that are being displayed by A-Pauled and smov are good points but all fals under the category of juking. In other words footworking is juking, popping is juking it is all juking the original name is HOUSE DANCING and JUKE music is originally called HOUSE MUSIC just like a HOUSE PARTY in Chicago named changed to A JUKE. If you don't know the history you shouldn't speak on it or against it. It has nothing to do with kids trying to express that they are grown. And all those people the principals from them schools act like they just made a big change, well the change you people made are minor,Chicago is in need of more important changes which we all know yall are to scared to step up and even try to change it so leave our culture alone, because juking has been around that long where we can label it apart of our culture. And believe it or not juking has stopped a lot of kids from joining gangs and from saling drugs, and I bet they know this but they just choose to ignore it.

Actually, I am from Chicago and video I posted isn't called taps, It's juking. The old juke joint music has nothing to do with Chicago juking. Same term but the meaning has changed. As reno said yes juking descended from house music. But that backs my point up. Because i'm just simply saying that juking and juke music is much more than just a sex dance.

And Reno, like i said I'm from the the west side of the chi. Western and Jackson.

Oh, I agree, my friend, I know that corner of Western Avenue, so you are for real, my point being that youi could draw a line from juke joints to house music, and from house music to juking, kinda full circle. And, of course you are right, that song for Watch My Feet is TERRIBLE!
