so much far trying to keep our kids safe...what are the police doing? why are there so many unsolved deaths of young people in the fine city of Calumet City? where is the police presence? perhaps they are too busy harrassing the young and innocent that are leading productive crime-free lives.

The majority of Calumet City police don't live in Calumet City. This is not their neighborhood, it is where they work. What incentive is their to care. The Calumet City police are, always have been, notorious for not showing up in time or at all to certain areas. That is the perfect place to commit a crime. The old neighborhood has been drug infested for generations. The mafia used to run it the gangs run it now.

YES! They passed a law a few years ago that said city officials and officers are NOT required to live in Cal City. So the top could have her 350,000 home in INDIANA. They took away the bike patrol that lasted two weeks. Too bad Cal City is not the Gold Coast, then they would have officers living and biking there.

This needs to change and be overturned. It is unethical. I had to wait two and a half hours for police to show up while the apartment below me was being robbed. The lives of my neighbors and myself could have been in jeopardy. I had no choice but to move. When the police finally arrived they just asked the resident of that apartment why he was living there. We need a new mayor and some new alderman. People who will clean up the city and run out this nonsense. I have heard rumaors that the mayor doesn't even reside in the city.

The shooting happened on Saturday. The bad guys were arrested on Wednesday.

With gang drive-by shootings plenty common, I would say the arrests were very fast.

Did you know says- "This needs to change and be overturned. It is unethical."

What?? Arresting gang shooters is unethical? The arrests need to be overturned??

Sure, let them go so they can do more gang stuff.

If you want a new mayor, police chief, etc, then vote them in. But don't cry about what you have, because you voted them in.

That is not what I meant. It is unethical that city officials and police officers do not have to live here. I will have to say that it is great that they were caught so quickly. I never said that arresting gang members or criminals was unethical.
I did not live here when the current mayor was elected and I plan to be very active in the next election.

Would you want to be in line at Blockbuster behind the guy that you busted the day before for selling crack? Stop blaming residency for the crime in Calumet City. You want to blame someone? Here's an idea...how about these seven boys who have no respect for life or perhaps their parents for not teaching them to respect life? Too easy, huh? Rather, lets vote in a new mayor with a mandatory residency ordinance because that's what will make all of this crime go away.

The Calumet City Police are bigger crooks than the "labeled" gang members. My son turned himself in when he found out they were looking for him. The person who did the shooting admitted he was the shooter. My son was said to be a material witness. Now he's being charged as a murderer, and he wasn't in the car with the shooters but instead he was in another car. He was not physically able to shoot anyone and is only being held because he knew the shooters. So for everyone who THINKS they know the whole story, take another look at the source. There were 2 girls also in the car with my son who were NOT charged with a crime. Is this a gender accusation? If so, why wasn't the male victim looked at a bit more closely.

mom, i read the story but not really up on it. is your son a latin king? so he was in one of the cars that tried to box the other car in? i dont know of calumet city so i cant comment on the police but it sounds like a rough part of town. I dont agree that the police have tolive in the town they enforce. if its a bad section of town and they are upstanding citizen, why should they need to raise their familys there, and how do you think their children would fair in a part of town infested with criminals. so it seems like 2 issues here on the post, first, cops living in the town they enforce, the other is gang members shooting other gang members. my thought is if your a gang member and you "help" commit a murder, you should go to jail.

I believe if you are with someone who commits a murder then you could be an acomplice to the murder. This is and has always been a rough part of town. It doesn't have to be that way. If people were living properly and invested in this community then there wouldn't be these problems. I still believe that if police officers were neighbors then it would be better.

yep im still around, i come on and read but usually dont say anything. my thought, is why do i need police to live around me and my family. i dont have any cops in my neighborhood. i still teach my kids to do the right thing. i watch out for my neighbors and my house. if everyone would be responsible for their own kind, the world would be a safer place. doing drug, gang banging, murder, rape, its just not right. My mother told me at a very young age, that if im with someone that does wrong, i am going to get lumped in with them, even if i didnt do the act my self. if you lie with dogs your going to get fleas. stop ruining your life and grow up!

I live in L.A,and though its different city we have the same problem. The cops that patrol our area is Rampart Division, you may have heard them, they were cuaght beating and shot a man for no reason. We are always harrass becuase we are Latino/a and the white people fear us,They stop and accuse of something we didn't do,instead of going after the real people who are commiting crimes,Its a tough world we Latino/a have to live in,but we stick together cuase of it.

Boxed a car in? That never happened. The guy that got shot in the car boxed himself in while at the same time, using his girlfriend as a shield. My son was in a car with two girls. Two girls, who by the way, were released. Confession? If telling the truth about what you know about the crime, which wasn't much because he wasn't involved, if that is a confession...then we ALL need to be in jail. THE TRUE STORY HAS YET TO BE TOLD. Did you know that the person who pulled the trigger confessed to doing so? My son along with one other youth was given the lowest bail because of their non-involvement in the crime. If they had such a hugh involvement in this case, they would have been given equal bail amounts. And where was the innocent boyfriend victim in court. The hand he used to hold his girlfriend in front of him as a shield should have healed by now. My heart goes out to the family of this young girl. My heart also goes out to my son who is guilty by association.

I used to visit cal city a long time ago and it was a good community. but in the 90's they ran out the good citizens and contiued to support the evil jealous ones. thats why they are haveing a problem with crime. People who defended themselves were labeled troubled and ousted out of the community by the police and citizens that where good at lying and stealing from the good ones. now they see why people got aggressive towards some of them trouble makers. this is a traget situation and beleive me the people in hawii are keeping a close eye on how this situation turns out. have no fear the good righteous ones are near. If we have to take this to washington d.c. to get some attention then we will, because the good citizens of that area have been punished and the evil ones have been rewarded. thats why the crime is existing in a heavy way. they want to do these evil un godly things to good natured, well educated people and that the reward they get, is to continue to cause mis-chif and depression and it will stop beleive me it will stop. Stop giving jobs to them spoiled trouble makers and allowing them to stay on top of the good hearted people, and allowing no one to discipline them. god bless and we the people of hawii will be praying for the righteous elders and good hearted people of the south suburbs.
