CALUMET CITY | Traci J. Brown is out as superintendent of Dolton Elementary School District 149.
During a special board meeting Friday night, the School Board approved an employee resignation agreement that had been discussed in executive session.
The board would not discuss the matter or mention Brown by name, but Board Attorney John Donahue cleared up all speculation after the meeting.
"Superintendent Traci Brown has resigned," Donahue said.
Donahue would not give details regarding the terms of the resignation or reasons for it. He said the School Board cannot reveal personnel matters discussed in private session.
Brown had served as District 149 superintendent since 2003.
Board President Darlene Gray-Everett said she did not know when a new superintendent would be chosen.
Dolton resident Felita Crayton was the only person to address the board prior to the executive session. She was upset that no board member announced during the District 149 business meeting Thursday night that there would be a special meeting Friday, although she specifically asked the board whether a special meeting was planned. According to the agenda of the special meeting, it was posted at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.
"I feel that you have not respected the taxpayer or the community or parents," Crayton told the board.
Also during the meeting Thursday, the board voted to authorize the hiring of a Calumet City police officer for the district office from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, and longer hours as needed.
Neither the board nor Roberts would say why an officer is needed at the district office, nor what the cost will be to hire the officer.
"I'd like to know if there's a concern for safety," Crayton said.
The board approved the submission of the final tax levy for 2011 without announcing the amount of the levy, or whether there would be an increase or decrease.
The district has six schools serving students in Calumet City, Dolton and South Holland.
