Seriously concerned with older sister's habit?I'm sorry this is long but I'm really lost on this..
Ok here's a little detail on the situation. My sister is 22 (I'm 20) she was married for 2 years to a guy she dated since she was 17. He passed away in 2009 from a DUI accident.
She moved out of state a week after his funeral and hasn't been in contact with our family at all until 5 months ago when she moved back.
She moved in with me and has a part time job. I needed help with rent, so its good, plus I missed her and the company is what we both need.
The thing is, when she's not working she's on the couch in the living room watching disney movies. And not just any disney movies, the lion king. Its weird, its not even on DVD...she installed a VHS player and has this movie on tape. I never even saw one before she moved in haha.
So it might sound pretty normal so far, she likes the classic, so what, right?
Well...we have cable. We have a rack of over 200 DVDs my parents gave me when I moved out.She will not watch anything else except this movie for the last half a year she's been back.
And not just once a night, she comes home, puts in the movie, watches it and when its over she'll rewind it and play it again, 2-6 times.I watch it with her, and try to be talkative. A couple times I caught her teary eyed during the credits.
We live in a 2 bedroom, me and my boyfriend share one, and she has a free room, but she never sleeps there. She falls asleep on the couch with the movie playing in the background.
I wake up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and I see her awake at 5 or 6 am watching the lion king. If she's asleep, I turn off the TV but when I wake up in the morning its on again. She says she has a hard time sleeping without it playing.
Now, I don't care about her occupying the TV, I have one in my room, and there's one in the kitchen. But if she isn't at work, she's watching that movie. When I ask her to come out and party or drink with our friends she won't.When I ask her to go out to dinner with us or go shopping she won't. She says she's tired from work.
I actually asked her about it, tried talking to her and she just says she likes it. I don't push it because I don't want to be like "you're 22 and watching the lion king."I even bought her the DVD, so she can maybe watch it in the kitchen to socialize with our friends that are always over. But she hasn't even opened the box. I told her its the same movie, but she says she doesn't like the "morning report" song on the DVD version. All our friends say "she's in there watching it isn't she?" When they come over. And really, if you want to spend any time with her, you have to go in the living room and sit next to her.
I spoke to our mom about this but all she said was "leave your sister alone to do what she wants."
I don't think she sees how not normal this pattern is.I'm not trying to be bitchy or complain I'm just worried about my big sis...she's been the one I looked up to all my life and she always lived a happy and active lifestyle.
Has anyone dealt with something like this? Like I don't know what to do, my bf says get rid of the VHS but I don't know...Help?
