This year, "For the Glory" will be wed with "Follow your Folly." The Kinetic Sculpture Race, which has long carried the "For the Glory" creed, announced Friday that it will carry as the title sponsor of this year's race the New Belgium Brewing Co., which boasts the "Follow your Folly" motto. Put your kinetic museum dream on hold. Now is the time to save money and preserve the race's future, not glorify its past. Hobart's legacy means nothing if it dies with him. Buck up and be financially responsible.

Way to put more strain on our local infrastructure. Do the police know they need to beef up security to keep us safe from the MOVING attendees?

You think alcohol has never been a part of the kinetic sculpture race? Think again. The beer garden idea is a good one and just because there will be beer gardens does not mean that the KSR will turn into a drunken puke fest. I'm sure having the beer gardens was the idea of New Belgium and may have been part of why the agreed to sponsor the race.

Miss Hw, there are strict restrictions on alcohol of any kind by participants. This is supposed to be a clean family event. Maybe you don't understand.

This was a dumb idea from a former mayor of Arcata. Go figure.

Thank you Fat Tire for sponsoring this most glorious event!! This is excactly what this race needs. Venders along the race route, be it food, drink, or suveniers is a great way to make it more enjoyable for racers and attendees. I would love to see this race get back to the level it used to be! All of you whiners can just stay home that weekend with your doors locked and shades closed!

I'm sure the race organizers are trying their best, but they made a bad decision in choosing a beer company as a sponsor. Its 'Adults having fun so children desire to grow older' not 'Adults drinking beer so children will see that and possibly grow up and become alcoholics too'. Sure, some spectators drink during the race (its not allowed for racers) but having a beer company sponsor and adding beer gardens along the course is adding a sleazy element to an otherwise wholesome family event.

It's a great idea to get a sponsor to keep this event going.
But, always the but ... nothing wrong with the beer gardens as long as people do not get stupid.
Drinkers need to realize they have to have designated drivers with them.
No exceptions.
I hope the police will set up a check point and will arrest drunks.
There will be a lot of people and children out there.
Possibly ?? shuttle busses along the route ?? I know there's expense to
this, but it's an idea.

Plan ahead.

Stupid alcohol is taking over surfing contests down here in Santa Cruz. It's the worst bloody message ever for our youth and everybody knows it.
You even ride a board right after a couple.
Why do we let them keep pushing in ?
The Money right.
In fact it's all aimed and geared towards the youngsters. But tell you something you don't know.

Hey is June Moxon still doing the race ?
I really liked her back in the day.
Hi June !

There should be DUI check points. Where there is beer there are idiots driving.

Um, coors used to sponsor the race. at least they went with a microbrewery.

Getting even sponsorships in this economy is a challenge. Good job getting someone to take on this project. Too bad no locals stepped up to help. Typical though it is...

Aw come on- can't tell me all you tea-totalers really care- So what are you all just need something to complain about?

Good job getting ANY sponsor- and all you folks with your so-called concerns- so don't drink! Since when did y'all become arbiters of society?

It's too bad all the businesses that used to sponsor the race are no longer in existence or no longer interested.

Too bad South Fork Mountain or some other non-alcoholic beverage could offer a sponsorship or some other local business that's not going out of business.

Um, sorry to break anyone's bubble, but the New Belgium Brewing Co. is owned by..... Coors! The same right-wing, homo-hating company that used to sponsor the race, dressed up in new "micro-brew" clothes. Not good.
