How many places serve mexican food in Middletown? I can only think of one, and it's a little pricey, as most of the eaterys there are. The thing i hear people go over the hill for most is clothes, what we have here is too limited and sometimes too expensive, we need affordable duds in local stores-that's my vote.

I live in Marin County and come over to Lake County to visit friends and volunteer at the world's best training program, PSI Seminars. If more people in Lake County took the basic seminar, they would be teeming with ideas for new businesses that fill needs!

New shops and services would be offered, local politicians would find solutions to county problems that are fiscally responsible, children would be well behaved and enthusiastic about their education, and the people in general would achieve sound health without drugs, alcohol, or other outside stimulators! Teachers would be more creative in the classrooms and parents would be insensely involved in their children's well-being.

I enjoy my Lake County visits and stay in local B-n-Bs. Everyone in Lake County is so nice but their lives would be greatly enriched beyond their present dreams if they invested in themselves and trained their minds for excellence by taking the PSI basic program.

It's so tragic that we cannot all live the perfect life in Marin County! No drug addicts, no alcoholics, and all the children excelling in their studies. All the parents so actively involved in their childrens' lives. Come on, are you the marketing director for PSI or some rehabitual scientologist? Let's get clear.

As the business owner of one of the “new businesses” recently opened in the HVL community, I’d like to set the record straight for the writer of this comment. First. I have been a member of the Lake County community since 1980. In 1983, I opened Rainbow Balloons in the city of Clearlake. I have been located in Lower Lake since 1996. I have been serving the entire Lake County community for 26 years. I have managed to survive through all of the economic downturns by providing quality products with good value and friendly service. I don’t differentiate between LL or CL or HVL or Cobb. I service all areas of the community. A large portion of my clientele does come from the HVL area, and I deliver there on a daily basis. I call the business in HVL, Petals & Baskets because it better reflects what I actually do. I HAVE put in my time and hard work serving the entire community and the community has supported my business so that I can grow and expand. I am grateful for the support I have received throughout the years, and I hope that the HVL/Middletown community will embrace and support my business as the LL & CL communities have.

Why would you question it? I would and do embrace the new shops. Maybe if people would stop thinking Middletown and HVL are just their own little slice of heaven and realize we live in LAKE COUNTY, then maybe everyone would be more inclusive. People shop where they want it does not matter if they are new or old. It's like pizza parlors, there could be three in the same town, but families chose their favorites. For whatever reason. Perhaps you are a business owner that's feels threatened.

Look at the population of Lake County. The highest percentage are retired citizens living on a fixed income, or on public assistance. Where do you think these people are spending their money in Lake County? All you have to do is come down to Clearlake Wal-Mart on the first of the month and you'll find them buying the basics to survive. You won't find them going to restaurants regularly, or visiting specialty shops. The lake conditions were horrible over the summer. The Clearlake City Council will discuss this Thursday how sales tax revenue is almost 13% down, along with 43% less hotel tax revenue than last year. What this is indicative of is pure and simple. Economic times are hard and the severe algae problem over the summer pretty much shot the highly relied on revenue from tourism to the bottom. The stores that provide the most bang for your buck are the ones needed in Lake County! Hello??

Innovative businesses are needed and part of the problem is that drug wars and hopelessness perpetuates the law enforcement and corruption. THere are MANY jobs that can be created in Lake county and the work force is here. Also, some senior citizens like to work short hours as well as stay at home parents. There are many industries that could come that are nonpolluting and there are two non-profits that are looking at this area.
Also the medical research communities are ALWAYS looking for real estate and a work force to compliment them. Homestake mining hired locally, as was required, from Lake county and brought a great deal of revenue to the area. Tourism and recreation WOULD return IF the people of the area insisted that the county be run differently. It is up to YOU to volunteer. It is up to YOU to encourage clean industry and STOP waiting for outside sources to come to you. Solicit to these companies and collectively SHOW up starting businesses that you want their businesses.]
Yes, the fixed income people are at WalMart. They also pay taxes and are a wonder pool of information to help start up businesses. THese people are SHARP and they have "been there" and done that. They just don't want a 40 hour work week and can mentor and also make a little money to augment their retirement.
I will never stop working because I love it. I have a fantastic career and it isn't money based although it is in the courthouse documentation that I clear $100K a year. Anything is possible and the thought that "I can't do it..." makes the "I can't..." the theme for all of those around you. Those thoughts are contagious as well as the "I can" thoughts.
You have the internet and there are many sources that are free to you to start your own business and Lake county has its problems as all counties do, but there are also MANY wonderful people who need direction and off they go!
I've been in the county for 40 years and NEVER looked for work. I have always had too much work and not enough time, so the negativity isn't something I even understand.
Dreams are free and fun. Grab and few and then roll up your sleeves and smile.
In the new wave of medical research people can work from home interviewing lab rats (people with chronic disease) and prepare a data base for the up and coming global health care plans. It's the new wave. Get on it.

I don't think most businesses try to compete with Walmart. They are great for basic everyday Items. But for clothes, and gifts. NOT. Unless if you want your child wearing everything everyone wears. At least go too Kohls. I like the fact of new businesses coming in. We complain that none come, then when they do they get slammed! Is anyone ever happy anymore??????

And those same people flood the resturants on the 1st week of the month. Don't kid yourself. They are living High on the hog, for the first 7 days. Then back to scraping. Well us working people with two family incomes scrape too. Maybe just alittle more responsible with our paychecks..

Yes, new businesses WANT to come in, but the Good Old Boys have a mafia type business in Lake county. New business owners are terrorized. For instance, Mendo Mill didn't pull a permit for the interiors of the structure on Old Hwy 53. They didn't HAVE to because they had what they thought was an "in" in the buidling department. In truth they just felt that they could bully the population and build a structure that didn't comply to ADA requirements or engineering or CEC laws and they got away with it. The permit wasn't pulled while they were building, they just rammed it through and threatened and terrorized ANYONE who would state otherwise, including the employees. They broke the law because they were a part of "the law" of the Good Old Boys. This is not condusive of good business. The building department if for YOUR safety and in a public space is more important than in a residence. This "mind set" that they will bully other business by taking short cuts NEVER works out. The permit is less than 2% the cost of the structure and when someone is hurt with non-compliance or the handicapped are barred from doing business because of this nonsense we all pay and the employees are held as accomplices to the fact. With unfair bargaining practices against the very people who live in Clearlake and work there it is criminal. The end result? No one wins INCLUDING the uneducated who THINK that breaking the law by not getting a permit serves anyone.
Mendo Mill has a bad reputation and it will remain until they are educated otherwise. They are not the only business that practices this insanity. The most ridiculous thing is that they pretend to be a home improvement store when the reality is they care SQUAT about the very people who pay their bills. They care about no one's home or life! It is a receipt for disaster because new businesses would rather start on a level playing field and the current world wide attention of the corruption doesn't help.
Watch the ABC7 News at 6 tommorrow. Another black eye for the LCSO?
As a former building official I know the game. If Mendo Mill wants to sue me they can! By all means bring it on. They don't intimidate me one bit and I have documents to prove they broke the law willingly. I know the game I just won't play and anyone who does is going down a path that has consequences. I am not worried about blowing the whistle on criminals. I love my county and I love the people and its biggest natural resource. The kids. I AM an American patriot and it is our duty (not our right) to expose criminal activity in the private and public sector.

Yes, Clearlake Mom. You WILL be dinks. Dual Income No Kids and I applaud you and your husband for being the sheroes and heroes that go unsung. The reality is that children take time, thought and money to raise, but then become an asset to the world, not just Clear Lake. THEY SHOULD have a choice in where they live and Lake county has its benefits. We have a responsibility to work everyday to insure that our children can come "home" and there will be a home for them here. I have worked my whole life to that end and in the end that is what I will do. Its a wonderful thing to see our children grow and learn and then teach US! We need to show them that we care and we need to solicit for the intellectual non-polluting industries to view Lake county as somewhere that they can settle and prosper. We need a base of industry here and forward thinking people that are not MIRED in the Peyton Place mentality that breeds the unrest and drug abuse. I don't appreciate the cops and robbers "game" that is played or the fact that on kids day at the park a military helicopter was brought in in front of the grammar school showing our little ones that the only way out of a drug war is in a "real" war blasting other little ones so that you can get a college education. The ridiculous people who put on that show are criminally insane!
Let the armed services get their hooks into our kids when they hit college, like they did my son, who became a US Marine. What an education. Go to Yountville and talk to the disabled vets and THEN think about where you want industry to take you. Our kids deserve to think that they have a future and to dream of bringing hope and peace to the world. There are many industries that can come and they are the research industries, not manufacturing. We aren't on a corridor for transporting manufacturing and we don't have the environment that can handle it. We need the IP industries.

Actually we have four kid's. There is no easy answer for the economy, but in Lake county this way of living has been going on well before the economy.

What has happened to California? The country no the world used to follow our lead. If someone in California wore something the next day everyone had to have them, bellbottoms, surfing, hot rods, Rock and Roll. We still have one of the largest economies in the world. A state that marched fought even rioted for peoples park. A state who inspired people to sit in the trees to save them. LC has long forgotten how to attract tourists, tourists are not looking for another Jack in the Box. A lot of talented people here could benefit even more residents if more of us had access to some broad band speed. How is that E-bay store working for you at 28K? One thing LC has always been and should devote more energy to is agriculture. People have to eat.
