This is EXACTLY why SB County needs a new Sheriff. Karp is a disgrace to his uniform and to the all the men and women of law enforcement. How can he possibly keep his job?

He is a addict who needs help, that is why he is keeping his job. He hurt his back on the job, give the man a break.

concerned citizen - ARE YOU NUTS??? let's see, "now, Deputy Karp, let's start with you. You're currently on felony probation, correct?" I can see the jury now....what an embarassment. Get him the help he needs in the worker's comp world but it's certainly reasonable to expect he'll lose his job. He's not only an addict HE'S A THEIF!

Rod Hoops was appointed by Penrod so the same problems came with him. This deputy stole evidence. If that doesn't it make it clear that he shouldn't be testifying under oath I don't know what does.
If he does have a problem with addiction its all the more reason why he shouldn't have a gun or a badge. Would you like to be the person that he's supposed to be helping the next time he gets a craving?

I am a FULL SUPPORTER of law enforcement. When you cross the line like this, your badge should be taken away forever. He is a criminal. We don't need criminals enforcing the law. No arrest he makes from now on will have any credibility. He is a liar, a thief and an addict. So what if it was prescription drugs. It comes from the same plant heroin does. There are legal options to those who have injuries and pain pill addiction. He should be fired.

"OMG please" has it right.

For the addiction, treatment is appropriate. For stealing evidence, though, this slap on the wrist (if it is even that) is too little.

This is a disgrace to every officer or deputy who does his job correctly. Karp should get the treatment he needs but should lose his damn job. How the hell can you steal? Maybe he stole stuff from his co-workers? Maybe he will steal again later on? Didn't they fire another deputy who was stealing? Nerey! He should sue and get his job back also.
Don't sell out the badge guys. You make law enforcement look bad.

I am a cop and, while I appreciate how difficult is must be when you are an addict, it does not mean you check your ethics in at the door. When that badge goes on, it should represent something.

Being under the influence at work would be one thing, but stealing? I am embarassed.

Problem is, he claimed it as an addict which is a medical condition. He claimed it was related to a work injury. Now, they can't fire him because it is a work related injury/addiction. Sad......

Ufortunately Jeff made a mistake that ultimately cost him what he enjoyed doing. Im sure everyone here has committed a mistake, big or small and have learned from it or maybe not or maybe no one ever found out about your mistake. There will always be critics for everything but maybe those critics need to look in the mirror as i don't believe no one is perfect including myself. Unfortunately if one has become an addict then I believe there should have been some intervention to get that individual back onto the right path. Maybe society was to blame for not extending a hand to Jeff. All I can say is that Jeff was a good man who made a mistake and may God Bless him and may his sole rest in peace.....

Unfortunately many that have posted it seems had no friendship with Jeff. I've know him since he was 10 years old growing up with one of his older brothers, we are family. Jeff despised drugs and their effect on hi community hence his pursuit of LE. He was a great athlete that gave him a full ride playing linebacker at Div.1 football and was invited to try out for several Pro teams only to turn them down because his heart was in criminal justice and so was his degree. His call was to LE...again because he saw the ravages of drugs in his community. What the story fails to state is prior to this incident Jeff fell out of a helicopter serving his community to which there was irreparable damage and the start of meds being prescribed to him. Nor does it mention how he worked his way through the ranks from working in jails, transportation, SWAT and aviation. One would be crazy to assume Jeff passed all his psych evals hiding that as many say he was a "drug addict". It never came up because it was never an issue For all you "know it all's" out there, there is a difference between being an addict and being medically dependent on meds prescribed by a doctor...next time one of you super hero's are in a doctors office ask your doc the difference because there is. I am sure in fear of losing his life's long dream because of this injury he wrestled within himself because of the stigma that many self righteous people here already placed on Jeff and others in his situation. I am certain he felt alone and conflicted because everything he set out to defeat was now trying to defeat him...not to smooth things over but they also failed to mention in the article that bags of heavy narcotics i.e. meth, heroin were placed out in the sting in addition to the 750mg hydrocodone pills...A true addict wouldn't go for the cheap stuff which leads to my conclusion...Jeff wasn't an addict he was medically dependent on something prescribed...something many here have criticized him for because you place him and others on a pedestal that you yourselves cannot even ascertain and with stigma and the self righteous indignation you have all show here no wonder Jeff felt like he had no other option than to steal the pills...heaven forbid he ask for help from people like you for a problem caused by an injury doing what he dreamed of doing since a child, that is serving you the public that would have so easily turned on him had he asked for help in the first place...but no one here has ever been scared or placed in a position where they have never been before and didn't know how to ask for help for fear of potentially losing all your dreams because of self righteous judgment. In the end could Jeff had done something different? Most certainly...but maybe just maybe he too was human. The Jeff I know would give you his last dollar, the clothes off his back, loved and cherished his family and friends (many whom are still LE). As for Teddy Larsen-assman don't be a smart ass because someone misspelled soul...if you like I can easily place my sole right upside your head and have you guess which of this Marines boot sole is kicking you in your smart mouth... my right or left. Semper Fi!

Thank you Big John for correcting me in that Jeff was medically dependent . My intention was to state such. "Addictied" but medically was my intent. I respectfully apologize for not clarifying. I also had the pleasure in knowing Jeff as his baseball coach at a certain stage of his life. God Bless
