Sounds as if the commissioners are beginning to pay some attention to the voter's wishes.

A referendum is the way to go in this situation.

Sounds like the commissioners need to go back and explore the many other options that are available to solve this problem without massive new spending. Work the courthouse in shifts, use space the county already owns, sell other county assets, cut social programs that are under used, cut social programs that are over used, cut county employees so they fit into the current facility, reduce costs, expenses and programs to fit current capacities. Just to name a few. I'm sure if the commissions really put their minds to it the could come up with 50 or 60 more. But laying a $50 million dollar burden on top of the burden that we already pay in taxes is unconscionable.

REMEMBER.....

Commissioner Keller has said commissioners were elected to study issues and make tough decisions for county residents.

They have already made up thier minds to shove this 100 million plus courthouse project, down our throats.

Recall them or vote them out the next election.

Keep obtaining INJUNCTIONS to STOP Construction until a new Board of Commissioners are elected.

Their attitude is beyound discusting

Of course there should be a referendum. This is a controversial and hugely expensive project and it is the taxpayers' money, which the Commissioners seem reluctant to acknowledge. The taxpayers should have their say.

Putting the courthouse borrowing to the vote would be the smart thing to do for the commissioners, because it woulod give them political cover. Unfortunately, their egos could end up being the cause of their political demise.

If you people want to make the decision why don't you run for office ? If you had your way we would still have one room school houses.None of the people that say they don't want a court house know any thing about the operation of the court house. We worked for years trying to get a fifth judge and now we have one and thing have to change. If you said lets take a look at some ways to make the operation run a little smoother then i could understand where you are coming from. But no the first thing out of your mouth WE DON'T NEED A NEW COURT HOUSE OR ANY THING ELSE. All most of you think about getting a tax cut and not ever paying your way to better your community. No new schools,no new exit ,no raises for teachers, don't fix the bridges or roads.Just make sure if i need these things that they are there but i don't want to pay for any thing. U Just let me keep my money and stay out of my life.Next election don't elect anybody to make decision for us we just put it on the referendum each time some body wants to try to better our community.

Seems I recall a Franklin County elected official say a new Judicial Center wasn't warranted (about two weeks ago) since better use of existing facilities would satisfy the "need".

Is she one of the people who you say don't know any thing about the operation of the court house ???

And what exactly is your connection with those who stand to make thousands of dollars from this "project" ???

The commissioners cannot buckle just because of a bunch of hicks are crying crocodile tears. The county needs this courthouse and it should not be up for vote, debate, or discussion.

Furthermore, every hick who whines publically about the courthouse should see their individual taxes increased. Additional whining by the individual should be met with another increase in taxes. With all of the whine bags we have this courthouse will be easily payed for.

Ol Barney, I don't know how much it would accomplish, but WGAL is hosting a "Town Hall" type meeting on Oct. 14, 7pm @ The Capital Theater, Main St. Chambersburg.

That may be an excellent venue to alert VOTERS and TAXPAYERS to the shenanigans that these three Commissioners (Keller, Thomas, & Ziobrowski) are involved with.

If our elected officals do not do what we the people, want, Franklin County residents should do what Bell, CA did. Throw the rascals out and put them in jail if that is appropriate. I believe the people, the taxpayers, ultimately own the debt for the courthouse if it is built and should have a say on where the courthouse is built, how our money is used and how much money is spent. No more "good ole boy" politics, favors paid back, and behind closed doors decisions.

Great posts. Let's see if we can summarize them:

Easy solution says we should leave the country if we don't like the courthouse idea. Wow! I guess I need to get a passport. Of course we assume that Easy Solution only wants us to leave the county, but herein lies the message. If you don't like Franklin County, don't try and change it, move out!

Rock Hoover says the very people who oppose the idea should have to pay a greater share! Whew. So if I fully support the court house, my taxes will not increase?

And they call the people opposed to this hicks. Has there been any studies justifying a new courthouse? Or is it something nice to have?

All county residents would benefit from a new courthouse. All local trades of the construction industry would have a chance to work. I would have a chance to work. The local workforce could then fix there trucks at a local shop, take their families to dinner at a local diner, thus putting money into the local economy.
If I could benefit from the building of a new courthouse, I would spend the money in town.
Shop, Stroll and Savor is that not Chambersburg's motto!!! Think beyond the negative.

To answer your question, yes. There was sort of a study. Seems to me, all they did was crunch a bunch of numbers together. They went around to every county agency and asked how much more space they think they need in 20 years. Not so sure they did much of a study to evaluate the efficiency of each department, though. Right there is where the problem lies. The efficiency of each department. They must think they can continue to snowball us into thinking we NEED this new courthouse. The commissioners have failed the people of this county. Starting with the unethical no-bid contracts to "our former commissioners", also known as Carter, Goble, and Lee Company.(CGL)
Here is that study (which we paid close to $400,000.00 to produce)

http://www.co.franklin.pa.us/SiteCollectionDo...

BTW, we do have a fifth courtroom out at the new jail that Carter, Goble, and Lee built for us. That fifth courtroom was a selling point for getting this new jail built to begin with. Why don't they use it?
And.....when is "the 20 year plan" meeting going to be scheduled for Chambersburg?

Construction of government buildings should be on an "additional capacity required" basis, NOT as a welfare project to provide jobs.

We have had enough "stimulus" and reallocation of wealth to last many lifetimes!
