Some of the postoffice workers in Columbia are going to be picketing the day of the pubic hearing next week. Since it is at 6pm, most workers will be processing the mail so they scheduled it at that time, just for that reason.
They think they can do whatever they want, because they are their own business entity, which entitles them to do what they wish with their company. But that's not the case because, they know if they try to, up and close, then Congress will try to stop them.. unless they are creative and sneaky about it.
From the outside, it looks like a simple layoff in order to survive in this economy, but it's a mask that is hiding the real truth. Originally they said, for financial reasons, they wanted to close this processing facility. Since they were told, if they do that, Congress will step in and stop them. Now, they want to close it as a processing facility by going the sneaky way with no-one noticing. And eventually become a drop off and pickup facility only. So they are saying they will lay off 42 people, but then they will lay off more.. and more people slowly. Then they will accomplish this and avoid Congress from stepping in on their master plan.. Because it will be easier to changing its function, after they have eliminated nearly all the jobs at that facility. And this is their real goal.
If this happens, all of Columbia, Jeff City and surrounding areas. will be forced to have their mail shipped St. Louis, to be processed and shipped out. But,there is proof that all mail (their important bills, letters, etc..) will not be delivered for a week to 10 days. Currently, with this hub processing everyones mail, it is taking 1-2 days. This may all sound confusing but thats what they want. There are 2 consequences and both of them successfully accomplishing their plan, are terrible!!
One is the obvious, the will be laying off family and friends... but the 2nd is worse..
Today, the mail is being processed in Columbia, Monday - Friday. It is picked up locally, processed and delivered in 1 to 2 business days by the most efficient mail processing Hub in Missouri. They have been awarded and noted for this honor. Back in 2005, they made a change to save some money. The higher up people made the decision to send all of the mail, picked up in Columbia on Saturday, to go to St. Louis, to be processed and shipped out. And since then, St. Louis complains daily... And says, since they have had to process Saturday mail from Columbia, all that Columbia mail gets processed late. They say that they can barely handle the load they already have.
When the Post Master heard, they did an experiment. 100 or so letters were shipped from Columbia to Columbia on a Saturday. Normally if picked up on Friday, everyone received their mail on Monday because it is processed at the Columbia Hub. But this Saturdays mail was sent to St. Louis. The outcome of this experiment was this. By Friday of the next week, only 85% of all the experimental mail made it to it's local destination. Then the rest came the following week.
Therefore, if anyone in Columbia mails a local letter or an important bill payment on Saturday, it will not arrive for a week to 10 days or longer.. And this is what will happen for the mail shipped out everyday!! If they get away with being sneaky and eventually changing the function of this significantly important mail processing hub.
And when their plan comes to fruition, every important document sen from Mid Missouri, including our State Capital, will be negatively effected.
And this is why I'm contacting you. So, since we can't do it alone, we need your help. We wish that all of the postoffice workers in Columbia can come and voice their opposition the day of the pubic hearing at 6pm next week. But it was purposely scheduled to be held during the time most workers will be processing the mail. They are doing whatever is necessary to accomplish their plan.
Please help this stop.
