Man Who Threatened To Jump-Didn't

So, what does everyone think of the Columbia police, now that they botched their attempt at catching a man to keep him from jumping from the overpass on Providence Road, Friday?
I was a witness to what happened, and from my vantage point, the man was beginning to give up the idea and was walking down towards a safer place when officers tased him. It didn't have the desired effect, and he scrambled back towards his original perch on the overpass. Before he could get too far, they tased him a 2nd time, and he fell down on the narrow walkway alongside the fence covering the sidewalk overpass. When he lay down on it, he then rolled on over and fell some 16 feet onto a slope of concrete at the edge of the pavement, causing him critical injuries. As a white man I'm appalled at the actions of the police. I understand his background is somewhat troublesome, but this mans HUMAN rights were violated by an unwarranted act that could EASILY have cost him his life! |

it just goes to show that Columbia Police are getting more and more dangerous. They are using their athority wrongly.

Please people use some sense. This guy was threating the the lives of others by getting onto that over pass w/ traffic. He was out for attention ant that was it. You think you could do a better job then sign up for it.

1 Are you kiddin' me? Sounds like a cop response to me. The traffic had been re-routed for 90 minutes before the incident happened. He was dispondent over having lost his girl, and the police acted inappropriately. End of story! Could I have done a better job? No question that in this situation, the answer is yes! The guy had begun to GIVE UP the stand off when police, not wanting the situation to last any longer, took a chance to end it by tasing the man, and failed! IF they'd been a little more patient, he would have walked down the ramp on his own! |

I don't care if he was "dispondent" over losing his girlfriend he had no right to put other people in danger. You are trying to rid this man of any responsibility for his actions. This guy was "dispondent" enough to try to jump from a overpass how are the police to know he won't attack them.

Also he had a past history of violence towards police officers and drug use.

I myself have had a runin with the colubia pd once. All I can say is they are very crooked! I think the columbia pd was wanting to try out their new tasers. He was causing problems for everyone! I would of shot his butt! No problem about that. Lead Man! Causing a interstate to close, Isn't this considered a terrorist act! Everything else is!!

1 Put OTHER people in danger??? I think you've been watching too many cop shows... How're the police to know he won't attack them, you say??? Poor little pitiful police..They probably didn't have more than a dozen guys around.... While I agree that this was a stupid charade on the part of this man, he still was denied BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS when shot by a taser OVER AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY! They failed to get him when he came within a safe distance of them, but shot him again AFTER he reached a point of imminent danger to himself...With 5 more minutes of patience, the man WOULD NOT have been harmed. End of story KOJAC! I was there and watched the whole thing play out...BTW I'm a white man, hoping that someone from this guys family calls me to testify to what I witnessed.. |

Your right it would of no way of harmed anyone if he had jumped onto there vechile on the highway. So what if he has a violent past w/ the police or was on drugs this is what he wanted to do. Everyone in the community should be inconvenienced for this 1 person. No one but this one person has any rights. Also I don't care what race you are that has NOTHING to do with it. |

Stop traffic, talk to the guy for a few minutes, if he refuse to retreat to a safer location--rush him. If he jumps, it's on him. Taxpayers saved, lives no longer in danger, problem solved in under 30 minutes.

Just remember it could be your child that gets tasered the next time! Think about it! I've looked into the eyes of a father, and mother that just lost a child by a taser. Its something I don't wanta see again. You might as well cut their right arm off! I have a child. Losing him would be the end of my life, as I know it. TY
