How can ANY elected official stand by and let this go on? The answer is because none of them have the guts to stand up for what is RIGHT! Just remember this the next time any of them come up for election.

It's funny that you think Ferguson is unique. People are convicted for life and even put to death based on personal testimony all the time in this country. The best a person can do is keep out of trouble and stay away from questionable people and activities. Unfortunately for Ryan he did not follow that advice. Welcome to America.

What everyone should really be thinking about is why Ryan's story makes you so upset, and the answer is because he is rich and white.

Then ask yourself is it possible that this could happen to a black person or other minority? Isn't it *more* likely? And do they have as good a chance as Ryan to get freed? Within that answer you find something infinitely more heartbreaking than one happened to one guy.
Everyone should do the right thing and ALSO fight for people that didn't get multiple dateline episodes and trial hearings, because those are the people that really need it.

You are correct that Ryan is white, but he is definitely not from a rich family. I agree that "People are convicted for life and even put to death based on personal testimony all the time in this country." Ryan's thousands of supporters are acutely aware of this reality and attempt to bring a consciousness of this fact to the general public, as well as our elected officials and the judiciary. We support all innocents who are wrongly incarcerated.

If you watch the 48 hours from Saturday, you'll see the car they talked about and found no evidence in was a Mercedes. If you think people that buy their reckless high school age son a mercedes aren't rich, that's fine. I disagree. The reason Ferguson has gotten recognition from the community is he has money. Poor people - real poor people - could and would never pull this off.

For the record, I believe the Mercedes wasn't bought for him, but rather was an old car that his father handed down to him. Regardless, what does that have to do with his guilt or innocence? The reason Ferguson has gotten support is because he is obviously completely innocent and was railroaded by the system. Certainly, that doesn't mean that there aren't also others who are innocent but are overlooked because they don't have the support system. No doubt there are. But that doesn't make this injustice any less real.

And what has he "pulled off"? He's still in prison for a crime he didn't commit.

People are not worried about Ryan because he is rich and white. People KNOW about Ryan because his family has worked tirelessly to get his story out there. That has nothing to do with money. It has to do with spending hours and weeks and years contacting people and begging for help. Anyone with someone who cares about them that much can get national attention. My sister in law was wrongly imprisoned and we spent six years fighting to get her out (and did). When she was arrested she had $7 in her checking account. We took out bank loans, cashed out money from life insurance, put up our homes to get her out. She was on national tv multiple times. We did not BUY her on there. She was on 2 national talk shows and featured in Good Housekeeping magazine, the Chicago Tribune, etc etc. She had book and movie deals. Our LOVE got her the attention. It's a cop out to say "I'm poor so I can't fight"; any family can get help but it takes giving up everything. It is not about the money. We had an expensive lawyer for our loved one's first lawyer and he sold her out. FREE RYAN!

Great story, concerned.

While the story of HOW an innocent person goes about attempting to gain freedom is interesting, isn't the real point the fact that Ryan is innocent? Innocence has to count for something.

No doubt Ryan is fortunate to have one of the best lawyers in the country representing him pro bono now. She's not representing him pro bono because his family has money. She's doing it because (a) he's innocent, and (b) the story already had national attention. Zellner's m.o. is to rack up exonerations (I believe she leads the entire country with 14 of them, out of 15 clients and counting). If that's your goal then you're going to want to represent innocent people. In other words, she is extremely selective. Her latest exoneration last year was Alprentiss Nash. Mr. Nash wasn't a wealthy man; he was an innocent man. Ryan will be #15 (or 16).

I saw a post here earlier from Jokster that said something like "Even though Charles Manson had thousands of supporter's he was guilty. So are you trying to say because a person has so many supporter's that they must be innocent? But I see now that post has been deleted. Which in my opinion shows they are not letting the whole word or opinion of otheres be out there for they would not have had that comment deleted. This is a thread ran by his friends or family that only allow good post to be on here to try and make it look better but in turn it makes it look worse for trying to hide things/comments. I would call that hinding things and protection!!!!!!

I have never met Ryan Ferguson. I do not know any of his family members. I support Ryan because I have researched his case and feel he is innocent. There are innocent people in prison; the courts do get it wrong. Once you get caught up in it you can't get out. I spent 6 years fighting to get a family member out of prison; she was innocent and the Governor of Missouri finally listened and let her out. So...it does happen. What happened to Mr. Heitholt (and subsequently his family) is beyond horrible. The person who killed him (and left HIS DNA EVERYWHERE OVER THE CRIME SCENE) is still out there. I challenge anyone who does not support this innocent young man to explain how a 17 year old kid brutely kills a man and leaves someone else's fingerprints, hair sample, and footprints at the scene. When someone explains how that can happen I will give up supporting Ryan.

Ryan's family has no clue what topix is. And TOPIX is not a site controlled by a person. You post stuff and no one deletes it. Dumbass.
