Dr. Bill McCown has resigned as the Superintendent of the Gordon County School system. I have heard that a new Superintendent has already been appointed to take his place, not as a interim until a new one can be found, but as the permanent Superintendent. It is my understanding that there was no search or interviews for this position. What is your opinion of this hiring process? I would think a position of this importance deserves the normal hiring process of a Superintendent to insure that the best person is found to govern our school system. After all, the children of Gordon County deserve the best leader available.

Don't they have to follow a certain procedure for hiring, especially for this position? Doesn't our board think we deserve the best? Or are they too lazy to post job, interview, and check references?

Well it's about time! but you've got to be kidding me, surely it will be posted?. Bill McCown didn't do a good job for Gordon, co. but he took the very large salary. He also applied for a job in Rome, ga. I'm suprised he was allowed to stay after that anyway. His heart is not in our school system and definately not for our Children.
Who did our (School board) appoint does anyone know? and folks are you aware of the salaries that these guy make. Bill and his staff spend more time out of the office, than doing their job. I've seen him and other's around town on numerous occasions. WHOS LOOKING OUT FOR OUR CHILDREN OR HAS THEIR BEST INTEREST AT HEART.

Someone else posted something similar reference this subject. I believe they should have to follow at least the normal procedure.

Take the money were paying in Central office. Bill McCown $140,000 plus. Susan Cole $110,000 roughly. What are these salaries getting us. I do understand with certain educational prefixes before you name certainly entitles you to a higher salarie "or does it". At what expense does it cost us to properly educate our children. We need a superintendent who will do his or her job. Holding accountable those who work under their leadership. Not one that is only building retirement, and you and I the "Tax" payer holding the bag and our children "OUR FUTURE" left defeated.

The Board wants the future leaders of Gordon County to appreciate the difficulity of our job. We are sorry you lost 6 years of your education process because of this School Administration. And we have decided to give you 2 or 3 more years of the same type Administration. We want you students, parents and taxpayers to know how hard it is to find a quality Superintendent. We spent about 30 min. deciding on this critical and well paid position. One of the Board members said they heard someone say they thought the new Superintendent would be good. That was good enough for this Board. If this turns out to be as bad of a hire as the last one we may qualify for disater from the Dept of Education. We wish our new Leaders luck, your going to need it. P.S. You taxpayers should be proud because your making these Superintendents rich. The Board

I have also heard that some of the people holding these positions at the Board of Education also hold 2nd jobs. That is fine as long as the taxpayers of Gordon County are getting the 8-5 workday they are paying for. But are they?

Tyner and the board let McCown name his replacement. She was convient and available so they didn't do any work in finding a new superintendent. Don't expect any changes in our local county school board.
We need a new board that cares about our children. We need a superintendent who can relate to the citizens and have the nerve to do the hard stuff like fire a director or two.
It's our tax dollars being wasted.

Has it escaped everyone that McCown looked for a job for months befor finally resigning? He interviewed with both Floyd and Rome but they didn't want him.
We need a new board and superintendent not associated with any of the existing ones.

We do not get an 8-5 work day out if these people. They are allowed to teach at local colleges and are allowed to leave early to do so...every single time!!
Funds, as our tax dollars are referred to by these people, are wasted daily and no one seems to care.

Gordonian, there are a couple of Principals you can pack up to go away with Director or two you mentioned. No loss to the students, staff and taxpayers. Sure hope the new Super has a clue...

I can tell you this.....Susan Remillard has always done a great job in her current position, and always has the students and schools best interest at heart. I can't say what all is out there to fill this position, but at least you know what your getting....and she is something great!

On another note, I don't think Bill's salary was too outlandish for the number of students he had to be accountable for and when compared to other systems, but I also don't think he needed more. Even though he resigned, I'm not sure he was given any other option.....if you know what I mean.

So "I know" are you saying the board offered him a raise to stay and a few months later left him no choice but to leave? He left because staying would affect his retirement.
Rumillard may be good at the job she does now, however, they did not post the position was open to public...no resume reviewal, no interviews, no reference checks. We may have missed an opportunity for someone we know is great because the board failed us in doing their job in the interview process. This is one position that should never be closed off only to be filled within the cliques of GCBOE.

Don't believe Bill had any voice in who his replacement would be.

Your emotions have the upper hand, making you rather fiery and fervent. That's great if you're hoping for a passionate encounter with you-know-who, because you'll be really hot stuff. However, in non-sexual situations you could become somewhat tempestuous and irritable, especially if you suspect that things aren't going the way you want.
