Asbestos found at Middleville elementary

Asbestos was "unexpectedly" found at McFall Elementary School while work crews were pulling up tile.

More information would be nice on this one. Was the asbestos in old tiles that were under the ones they were pulling up? Or was it in the tiles that they were pulling up?

I heard about this today, and was going to pull my son out of school, but after talking with my husband who is a safety specaliest, he said as long as it is contained and the windows and doors were shut, the kids would be ok. That entire school is filled with asbestos I am sure. That is why they had to take down the old Middleschool.

Oh.. and they sent a note home? Must have only been to the kids at McFall they sent it to.

My youngest was there last year.

They are in the middle of tearing out the old cafeteria. That's probably where it came from. And that area is closed off to students. They even have parts of the playground closed off right now. BUT.. that area is open to the outside. They started this project during spring break. Does anyone know WHEN it was found? That should eliminate how much of an exposure risk the students had/have.

I went to this school in the 70's. It's not a shock to me. The middle school (old high school) had it too. Of course they didn't seem to know that until they tore it down. Usual politics saying they didn't know about it. I don't believe that for a second.

I've been watching their homepage.. nothing is posted yet.

But for those who were looking for the funeral arrangements for Nikkolas Carmean... you can find them there. I don't go to Caledonia's site, so I don't know if they have them listed there for the other young man. My guess is yes they do.

If it was isolated and there is no threat to the students... fine. It's a very old building and quite frankly, it really doesn't surprise me that they found it. How many other old buildings and homes has Asbestos been found in that we don't hear about? Don't get me wrong, I'm not amused about Asbestos being found in one of our schools. But if the situation has been handled properly, and it's been disposed of properly, what more can we do? It's a product that hasn't been used in a very long time. Whether we like it or not, unless all of the older buildings are torn down and rebuilt, it's still going to be found.

Oh, and notification to ALL of the district would be nice too

I believe there is more to the story that what was "reported" A permit for asbestos was pulled a month ago, that doesn't sound "unexpected" to me?

I'd take my chance with asbestos rather then a poorly educated teacher.

Asbestos was used everywhere. Seems that someone would have would have looked into this first. Vacation is coming. its a problem that could have been managed better.
