I don't live in Caledonia, I live in Plainfield Township, and we live less than 1 mile from the tornado siren. I remember a few years back the thing was going off for 15 minutes under bright blue skies.(No, it wasn't the test.) There was a confirmed tornado in southern Kent County and therefore all Kent County sirens were going off. It is sort of like the little boy who cried wolf. We don't really pay attention to it that much anymore.
You are much better off getting a NOAA weather radio, and taking responsibility for your own safety. I guarentee you that when that thing goes off in the middle of the night you WILL hear it. They are louder than heck! Plus you get INSTANT information about where the storm is and which direction it is heading.$30 is a small price to pay for peace of mind, you don't have to worry about where the county siren is...and again...those NOAA radios WILL wake you up!!!!

It comes down to safety, not dollars. Period. A cell phone, computer and TV are useless if you're sleeping at night. A loud siren going off automatically in the middle of the night in a village the size of Caledonia will get your attention quickly.

You sir need to stop talking as you obviously can't read or comprehend what you have read. A tornado came through Caledonia not too long ago and touched down, sending golf carts from a business flying all over. Why would you want to have to depend on someone to make it to the siren and hand turn the thing from ancient times. I think we can afford the $1 or less it would cost each resident of Caledonia Township and Village to come up with. This is a no brainer. It's actually quite sad the the board can't figure this one out themselves. We should be thinking about the safety of children and others who can't make that decision for themselves. Never ceases to amaze me.... |

oh no...not the golfcarts. get a damn radio and some batteries. |
I wouldn't trust it to wake me up. We have them in Cascade and you can barely hear them if you have your windows closed and the AC on. I don't trust the siren to save my family. For the people that live immediately by the thing, yeah...they will hear it. Lastly I will say that even sirens are not fool proof. Someone at the NWS has to either confirm the tornado on Doppler radar, or have a credible eyewitness account to sound the alarm. Regarding the tornado that wreaked havoc on the golf cars and dairy farm a few years back...there would have been no warning siren until after it was over. If it had been a house in the path of the tornado, their first notification would have been the windows blowing out of their home. |
