The city is considering the sale of Riverlore. I sure hope they put stipulations concerning it's use and upkeep in the deed with a clause for default if they aren't followed. It's what lots of towns are doing to preserve their historic buildings. It might have saved a few of our better buildings if they had been doing it all along.

That is what should be done. As a matter of fact, there are publications and companies that specialize in homes like Riverlore. They get decent prices for the properties instead of giving them away. They would know how to market the house and the area to make it appealing.

have any of you seen Riverlore lately? It's already gone downhill, needs some major landscaping and exterior work done, so sad!

Has anyone done a real evaluation of the property in the last few years? Does the city have a list of repairs that need to be done and appraisals of what it would take to do them?

Or there any jobs that could be done by volunteers?

Riverlore does belong to all of us.

There was a video done on June 12, 2010, regarding the most apparent needs evident at that time.

I am unsure who did this or for what purpose.

It doesn't matter how awake we are if we don't get off our lazy butts and do something about things. We spend entirely to much time waiting for someone else to take charge or we pack up our households and we move away.

Cairo is in desparate need of a drawing card and if we handled Riverlore like towns down south have down there mansions, it could darn well be just that. Of course, we'd have to get past the old crones being worried about traffic in "their neighborhoods".

Riverlore would make a wonderful arts center and fine dining restaurant...and it has the square footage to do so.

Our second biggest problem is our inability and sheer laziness when it comes to promoting ourselves.

Northern I couldn't agree more; Cairo could be the most prominent city in Illinois. 8th st was the center of the world when I was young as well as Commercial and Washington Ave.

Folks, I am afraid Cairo's day has come and gone. However, there are still some individuals that are continueing to fight over the last crumbs that are left. The lights are only continueing to burn due to state and federal grant funds. No economy, lack of leadership, and with no plan for the future spells disaster.

As far as restoring & keeping anything old, them days are gone. People are doing good to survive & to live day by day & to continue on in survival. Attracting tourists & new business's just isn't going to happen. Life is what it is & just except it, because you aren't going to change it.

Drive over to commercial you see the problem, city trucks being used for private business, it will never change till he is brought under control
