What is the story (rumors or facts) on the Gem Theater?

When did the city get the grant to fix it? How much? What fiscal year? Who from?

How much work was done when? Years?

What condition was it in when Wilson left office?

Who contracted the work and approved the expenditures?

What work was done on it during Farris's term?

What is the condition today? Why? Where was the grant money used?

Thanks.

$20,000 to the City of Cairo to renovate the stage at the Gem Theater. The city is contributing $70,256.
This project was initiated by Fowler.

Outside Looking In, you say the city "is" (present tense) contributing $70, 256. Does this mean this project is back up? Gosh, I hope so. The Gem is another one of Cairo's tresures that needs to be preserved. I remember when the stage was used for fashion shows. I assumed in earlier days it was used for plays.

But that's $90,256.00 in cold cash. What was it spent on?

I thought so BT. I saw the date of the article, but was hoping the project had been revitalized.

Grunt do you know who the city hired for their general contractor? If construction materials were bought who ordered them? How much of the $90,256.00 that we know of is left? If none how was it spent? Do they know at city hall? Who wrote the checks that allocated the money & to whom? How much did we pay in labor & how much for the material? Since we are a municipality did they take bids on the project? Can we go back & sue the contractor for a job not completed?

SOMEONE needs to take the initiative to find the answers to these questions and get the ball rolling on repairing it. Time is a wasting. That Gem was in deplorable condition a year ago when I saw the pictures of it posted on the Cairogate. Time and the elements can only do more damage.

How can you sue if you don't know who the contractor is, BT? What if the person can't be located after all this time?

Grunt's helpful with knowing the condition of the Gem, but Grunt's in Missouri. A point man is needed NOW on the ground--in Cairo. Would you as a resident consider being such a point man or woman?

Unless these questions are meant to be rhetorical, I'd stop asking and start taking some real action. Produce fliers showing the damage to the Gem; post them around Cairo demanding to know what became of the grant money and who's now responsible for seeing the Gem gets repaired. Generate a petition that asks the same thing. Write letters to the editor of the Citizen. Surely the employees of the local newspaper can see what's happening to the theatre. Heck, it's just down the street from them. Go to other area newspapers and tell the story. Knowledge is power. And the more people who know what's going on, the better. It works in your favor.

While it's fine and dandy to whistle blow on this website, remember: one half of Cairo's population is poverty-stricken. Do they even have access to the internet? How realistic is it to expect that they read Topix? You need to get the masses behind you in order to affect change. These young people in Cairo want a movie show to go to.(Can you blame them?) Older people probably do also. They'll be on your side. Hopefully others will too.

Just remembered another avenue of contact: WKRO. Considering the financial straits Cairo is in right now, she's fortunate to have a radio station. A lot of small towns don't.

I also understand there's a call-in show once a week on Thursdays 10:45am-11:00. If I lived up there, I'd be calling in every week to voice my concerns about the Gem!

The money must have gone to those feeding at the trough. Everyone knows where Ryan is and i dont know why a lot of these people get away with more than a former governor. Something smeels fowl to me.

The date of the article is 2001, Tommy, for crying out loud. It's taken you seven years to figure out something is wrong.

"Feeding at the trough" is fastly becoming a trite expression around here. Say who you think has taken the Gem's money--or hold your peace.

Back to Ryan...Who in Cairo is getting away with exhortion, racketeering, bribery, money laundering and/or tax fraud? Because that's exactly what the former governor was convicted of. The fed investigation that lead to his conviction started with a scheme in his Secretary of State's office by which unqualified truck drivers obtained licenses through bribes. One such trucker was involved in a deadly crash in Wisconsin that killed 6 children!

Have any children died because of the failure to renovate the Gem? If not, then don't equate what Ryan did to what is happening now with its mismanagement.

If you're also displeased with the current gov-- who from what I read is no prize--you can thank Ryan for that too. Ryan's conviction directly or indirectly led to the state voting in Blagojevich (over the other Ryan of no relation) because the voters were ticked off!

Noticed that, did you?

Actually all the information she is seeking should be in the minutes and treasurer's reports from the city meetings during the period. All she has to do is go ask Hesslerode and if she wants copies they cost $1.00 a piece. Of course, the city clerk is busy working on the daily business of the city, so a little patience and niceness would go a long way.

Actually, the reason there is no movie in Cairo is because the citizens would not support it. Remember Kerasotes tried. Just like the swimming pool and so many other businesses, if they don't come, the businesses fail.
