The city's mayor, Judson Childs, ordered a mandatory evacuation as of midnight Saturday after meeting with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, the top flood-fighting agency.

"There is no count yet on the number of people evacuated, but it's just about a ghost town," Childs told Reuters.

But he said some residents were opting to stay behind.

"There are some people who will stay, like me, who are going to go down with the ship, so to speak," he said.

Yeah I saw him on CNN. A very short clip I might add. He looks more like a crap shooter more than a mayor

Right Judson!

He is certainly not setting a good example, but then he never has.

He is probably staying behind because he knows the thieves did not accept that free ride out of town!

BTW, did anyone see Honkytonk and his sidekick get on any of the busses?

What exactly does a mayor look like? After serving in the Army and working for the DOC for thirty-two years after serving our country I can't begrudge him for enjoying a gameof dice

Obviously you've never held a job in the private sector. It shows. You're right at home in the great welfare state of Illannoy.

(SlimPickens) I have known MAYOR CHILDS for a long time. I can assure you he would put you to shame when he wears his formal attar. I can say he dressed down during the flood. I ask you would you wear a suit and tie to look at a sand boil or climb up on the levee. Slim I am sure your cowboy shirt and boots are your style. But different people have different cultures and dress. I have the up-most respect for Mayor Childs. He is born leader who doesn't back down. Slim you better go check on your horse and slop the hogs its getting late

He may have ordered the evacuation to save his people but he sure didn't mind putting the cable mans life in danger by calling repeatedly for them to come and fix his cable on Sunday!
I hope he thanks a farmer every time he eats a meal again! Let's just hope that if Cairo was spared that he will try a little better to keep his ppl from burning their city down.

Farmer, not rancher. Farm owner, not ranch hand. No live stock, just John Deere. No government handouts either, not yet that is.

Yep. Those great guys and gals who join our volunteer agencies. and those others who come out of the woodwork when their is an emergency.

They are the glue that keeps a town together.

After we get back into Cairo, we really need to form a group to help with lots of other thins as well.

You don't know me so don't pretend to. You have NO CLUE what it is I do or don't do for a living save yourself any further embarassment. I've yet to find a state that has no flaws, Illinois certainly has its issues. But I am CERTAIN that many of the toothless, meth-induced, psychopaths in the state of Misery are sucking from the gov't teet.

This will be the last you here from me as I am choosing to invoke some great wisdom I learned from the great modern philosopher Robert Montgomery Knight.(Yes the basketball coach) "Never argue with an idiot. He'll drag you down to his level and beat you with experience!"
