luv to eat wrote: <quoted text> I missed the flyer! Which Dollar store was it at? Would love to have one. Remember Jeff from Harper's which his ribs were to die for. Or Bob Auchenbach's pizza's across from St. Mary's Park on 33rd Street? Those were great! Dathol Taylor's candy. Another winner. Sure miss all those little home stores that made Cairo such a good place to live.

Since when did rent in the housing stop being based on income? I believe it was originally set up that anyone could live there but that rent would be a percentage of household income. Those who are paid wages and/or earn more are supposed to help offset the rent of those who don't have as much. Has the rule changed or are we just assuming that everyone pays the same amount?

Come to think of it, we sometimes bought barbecue sauce from a friend in Elmwood housing. Since they tended to their own paperwork, I have no way of knowing whether they paid sales tax or not. Guess that was between them and the gov'ment and if they didn't at least my money was spent in Cairo and not in Carbondale, Marion, Paducah, or Cape.

I looked in the 1966 Cairo phone book and her name and address is stated to have been 425 20th Street. Im sure someone once pointed out a house downtown in that area once and saying it was where she had lived. I think i have some older books somewhere and will check them out too. when i get time.

Asking wrote: Besides bugs which the occupants can control, trash which they can pick up and dispose of, and lack of washers and dryers which are luxuries, exactly what is wrong with the public housing in Cairo? A washing machine and dryer is not a luxury but rather a necessity. So think again oh low one. You dip! How would you like to give up your appliances? What else do you call a luxury --a land line phone so that disable and elderly people can't even call an ambulance for themselves? Is a local hospital another luxury you dope? Must be because you haven't had one since the 1970's. Is food a luxury if you buy more than just beans and potatoes? Let me tell you I have been in the helping professions 31 years and if you worked for me I would I would fire you so you could see how it feels to be the have-nots. I tell you I am having a very hard time trying not to give you a good cussing --the thoughts of jail time is all that deters me from it. But if you can think up a filthy word then baby I think it of you. Go eat a cow patty!

truth wrote: I wouldn't move out their if I where you it's a real pain in the ass you have to wash clothes and run the hose in your sink and that's just nasty!! You would think as many grants as they got they could at least put some washing machine hook ups in the apartments. The worst place to live because everyones always in your business,(BUT THAT"S CAIRO PERIOD!!) Just not a good place to live if you don't expect to fight all the time and argue with the housing authority to come out and actually fix something. i lived in elmwood in the 70's ur washer drained in sink then 2 some things never change

Well, if the people that live in the housing projects dont stand together and demand better living conditions, it will basically remain the same or even get worse.PEOPLE you all have a voice in this matter, please use them.PEOPLE standing together and being heard is a very POWERFUL tool, especially when the news media gets involved,no one should have to live under these conditions,EVEN IN CAIRO ILL. So come on people SPEAK UP!!!!!!

So no, sadly, public housing conditions in Cairo will never improve.
