CAHOKIA -- The meeting to remove Village Trustee Sheyla Ware never happened.

Mayor Frank Bergman did not convene the meeting Wednesday after a closed door meeting with village attorney Bob Sprague, Ware and her attorney Carmen Durso.

"We had a good conversation," Bergman said. "It's the first conversation that I had with Ms. Ware since whatever happened. It's been 10 weeks since I have seen or heard from her."

That's because Ware, who suffered an aneurysm at a Cahokia convenience store nearly three months ago, was just released from the hospital on Tuesday.

Bergman called the special meeting for Wednesday morning to ask village trustees to vacate Ware's seat and name her replacement. Ware showed up for the meeting, along with about 40 supporters.

After speaking with Ware and Durso, Bergman returned to his seat and said, "After a brief and good discussion, Ms. Ware will continue to act as trustee. There is no need to convene the meeting."

Most of the crowd stood and applauded. Someone shouted, "Let's have a hand for democracy."

Under an Illinois law, a vacancy can be declared only because of "resignation, failure to elect or qualify ... death, permanent physical or mental disability."

Ware, who was elected in 2007 on Bergman's ticket, is recovering, she said, and is pleased to remain on the board.

Bergman had said on Tuesday he would replace Ware, the trustee from District 2, because the district's 1,500 residents were not being properly represented.

Three incumbent village trustees lost their seats in the April election. Phyllis Pearson, Kyle Johnson and Trevon Tompkin are all new to the board, but aren't scheduled to be sworn in until May 5. However, under an Illinois law, if Bergman would have convened the meeting, the new trustees could have asked to be sworn in.

Johnson and Pearson had said they would ask to be sworn in, if Bergman convened the meeting.

"I think the law speaks for itself," Johnson said. "Any unstable foundation will crumble. This is the first crumbling of Frank Bergman's administration and it's crumbling."

Trustee JoAnn Malone took a vacation day to attend the unusually scheduled morning meeting and disputes Bergman's assertion that he didn't know about Ware's illness.

"This is a small town and she collapsed at a local convenience store. Someone called me and told me what happened that day," Malone said. "Everybody was talking about it. That he didn't know? Ridiculous."

Bergman said he's a longtime supporter of Ware.

"I am very glad she's staying on the board," Bergman said. "My concern is for her personal health. If she's healthy, that's a good thing."

The person who is really left out here is Sheyla Ware. Sadly, she is being used by BOTH sides. Frank is using her & her illness to try to get support on his board. Curtis is using her to call attention to the mayor & to try to create an ally. Sheyla needs to focus on her health & forget about all the Village BS - Nothing is worth sacrifices your health for.

That picture was too good looking to resemble Frank.

And I believe people are right. Shelya is being put in the middle. She needs to be concerned about her health and gettin well.

Let Frank and Curtis fight for themselves.
