I wonder how many people in Swartz Creek have cancer. Is the rate of cancer here higher than normal. To me it seems that there is defiately a cancer cluster. At Elms Road Elementary school there have been two cases of breast cancer, one case of finger cancer, one case of ovarian cancer, and now a student with Ewings sarcoma. A number of my next door neighbors also have cancer. I personally know of at least 7 people who have cancer in Swartz Creek, not including the two written about in the article. Is it normal to know so many people with cancer?

Lots of people have cancer all over the country. It comes from a life time of exposure to hormones and chemicals. I dont think that Swartz Creek has a higher incident of cancer than any other area in general.

I strongly believe that all of the people in Swartz Creek-near the Berlin and Farrow Dump Site, are DEFINITELY developing cancers due to residual toxins in the water and the ground. Why else would the city of Swartz Creek decide (after a supposed total removal of all toxins) not sell off any of the 40 acres that the dump site is on?? None of the land adjacent to that dump site should have been sold either! My sincere condolences go out to those who have developed cancer and to anyone who will develop cancer or other serious complications due to living near that site.

Berlin and Farro is in Gaines Township, not Swartz Creek. Gaines, Syring and Morrish Elementary Schools are more likely to serve the Gaines Township than Elms Road.

My sister lives real close to a store called "Issacs" on Morrish/Grand Blanc Rd. My children spent alot of time at there Aunts house while growing up in there younger years. My son is now 25 yrs old and daughter 15 yrs old. In Jan.08 he was diagnosed at UofM in Ann Arbor with an extremely "Rare" type of cancer that affects the digits - toes, fingers. He is #18 to come down with this type of cancer according to UofM and also he has been reported to be the youngest to date affected by this rare cancer. He lost his left big toe. It just makes me wonder about this Berlin & Farrow toxic waste dump. Emails welcome: kak51362@yahoo.com

I went to Elms Rd Elementary (grew up on Elms Rd between Reid & Grand Blanc Rds). My mom was diagnosed with cancer in 1982, eventually losing her battle in 1995. Several of my neighbors, their children, and their pets have been affected by this disease as well. We all use well water...which surely has been affected by the "site". Even if the other toxins are said to be gone, what about the arsenic???

Chuck Berlin's SON(s) still live in those farm houses TODAY right next to the fenced in toxic site. Well the one on the West side of the road doesnt because he hung himself in that little white shed next to the house last summer. He was about 35 years old. One of the other sons live across the street still. Good guy, but you would have to think... Does he realize he is basically going to get cancer himself?

When the “Coal Miner’s Daughter” Beverly Perdue took the North Carolina oath again and pledged to uphold the laws of North Carolina in front of President Pro Tem Marc Basnight and all of North Carolina was on a cool January Day. But Beverly Perdue’s knees were not shaking from the chill of a 7 knot breeze; it was because things were falling apart fast at the PCS Mine Site.
As it turns out, as Beverly Perdue was bragging about her roots as coal miner’s daughter and the millions of dollars her Father made from mining in her acceptance speech. She too has also benefited from mining, but not coal mining Phosphate Mining particularly the PCS Mine in Aurora , N.C. that she can almost see out her New Bern back door.
Both Sen. Beverly Perdue and Sen. Marc Basnight have been supporters of the PCS Mine for a long time. While Sen. Basnight had no ties to Mining, his family roots go back to his ex father in law was in the waste disposal business.
Major NC State and Federal investigations now concentrate on the illegal 5 million dollar a year payments from PCS/Texas Gulf Mine to the North Carolina Clean Water Trust Fund.
Sen. Basnight District has been used a hush money to spread around the Environmental Community to look busy and create window dressing that somebody is watching, and create cover for PCS to continue to operate without objections.
From inception the Clean Water Trust Fund has been accused as being a Slush Fund. Even to the point that a button was placed on Sen. Beverly Perdue’s desk in a political ad representing the Clean Water Trust Fund along with the North Carolina Rural Center also controlled by the pair.
Many of the projects like Bay River Sewage/River Dunes in Beverly Perdue’s District and the Sewer projects at Stumpy Point, Engelhard, and Pantego in Sen. Basnight District have been and are under investigation by the North Carolina State Auditors Office and other North Carolina State and Federal Agencies.
While Gov. Beverly Perdue, and Sen. Basnight have had the benefit of the “Clean Water Slush Fund “ as appropriately named by Rep. R L Clark and Rep. Fern Shubert from the beginning.
Sen. Basnight’s ties to the Solid Waste Industry and Sludge Dumping Industries, and Gov. Beverly Perdue’s loyalty to the mining industry has now created an out of control by design illegal waste depository site that stealing 78 million gallons per day from the United States Land Trust and is killing people by the thousands in North Carolina and Virginia.
Just as Gov. Beverly Perdue has promoted PCS to see how much damage the foreign company can do by increasing the size of the mine and the length term that PCS can illegally operate in North Carolina .
Sen. Basnight’s contacts in the Solid Waste and Sludge Disposal Business, and Public reports indicate Gov. Perdue and Sen. Basnight’s have conspired to make PCS a hand off project. This has enabled PCS to dump 5 times the amount of Toxic contaminates.
The scope of the dumping is gigantic, with whole train car loads of toxic waste from who knows where, being dumped back in the largest excavation site on the East Coast and buried. The train car loads disappear like a child’s matchbox toy on the beach.
The pumping at PCS Aurora Site needs to stop immediately, and all asset of PCS need to be seized to protect the Taxpayers of United States of America and the Taxpayers of North Carolina until evidence can be presented in the Glenn Hockney/ Hyde County 500 million dollars law suit against PCS is heard before Judge Britt in Federal Court in Greenville, N.C.

Apparently none of you have ever tried to dig a hole anywhere near the old Berlin/Farro site. If you did, you would realize that after about 2'-3' there is a very thick, very solid layer of clay. None of the toxins on that site made it past the clay. Dozens and dozens of test wells were drilled on the site and around the site at different depths. No contamination was ever found. The EPA wanted very, very badly to find some evidence of ground water contamination, but none was ever found. People have lived in the area for 70 years without any problems associated with toxins in the ground water. None of the employees who worked at the site, directly exposed to the toxins have gotten sick from the exposure. The entire site, and by that I mean the entire 40 acres was excavated well into the clay (a depth of 2'-4') and removed. There's a nice man at the county who can tell you exactly where that dirt is now in the Montrose landfill and at another landfill in Ohio. All of the excavated soil was replaced and allowed to 'go green', and the site is cleared for residential development. As far as the EPA is concerned, the oil spot under your car is a greater environmental threat than the former Berlin/Farro site. And finally, no laws that were on the books at the time were violated.

That Mr. Voelker succumbed to liver cancer is tragic, and the fact that his daughter has a different form of cancer is equally tragic. And (according to angel54) the fact that cancer seems to run in the family is another tragedy. But not even AlGore can connect these tragedies with Berlin/Farro.

Apparently you are ignorant to the facts in this case, those people have WELL WATER! what were they drinking...it wasnt city water. And...the ground was contaminated and that is why the Berlins and the farrows were fined....get your facts straight...blundering blubberfish

The comtaminated soil from the Berlin and Farro site was "SPOT" removed ONLY. The remaining soild was spread over the site, with untested soil that was brought in from who knows where.

Soil surrounding the site was never removed, or tested. Only specific areas, such as the drain was cleaned. After so many years of dumping, into the unlined lagoons, leaking underground tanks, the ground, contanimants would have travelled through the viens in the clay to the aquifer. They are heavier than water and would be more concentrated at the bottom. The "new" wells in that area are commonly deep wells.

FYI - the daughter's cancer is back - tumors in her neck, underarm and chest have just been discovered.

God Bless everyone who lives anywhere near a site such as this in Michigan as the MDEQ don't give a dam!
