Ben-

I can relate to some of your thoughts, but come on! A podunk hicktown? I guess we can't all be metrosexuals.

The "idea" was never intended to attract taxes of any kind. By the way, how does one see how neighborhood benefits from liquor tax? Also, can you explain to me how this liquor tax will relieve any burden from paying for a new football field? I thought the liquor tax was a state tax. And, I thought the premise of the idea was that Zeeland would try and capture busineess (patrons) currently going elsewhere (in Michigan). Guess I'm just a dumb hillbilly!

Anyway, your are right on with Greg. Otherwise, tell it to your I-pod.

Bob,

I must admit that I posted in the wee hours of the morning, procrastinating during a term paper, so my justifications weren't necessarily thought out as much as I had intended. Unfortunately, Zeeland is looked on very unfavorably. Kids that I've met from West Michigan scoff at me when I meantion the town I grew up in.

As to the taxes, no, I don't think the alcohol ordinance was intended to attract these taxes, but you really can't say that they hurt. The more money put back into the town, the better the local economy will be, for everyone.

Either way, I want to thank all of the college kids that put in absentee ballots, including myself. One of the biggest reason this was passed was because of absentee balloting, which I'm sure consisted of at least a +40 margin from "Yes" over "No," all these votes being from college kids.

And yes, Bob, I do have an iPod. You should get one; they're a step above your cassette deck.

Ben-

Thanks for the advice. I wish I had one of those fancy iPods or a cassette deck, but my 8-track still bangs out some sweet Led Zepplin tunes!

Pretty sure the absentee ballots went the other way, predominated by the great white-topped snow bird. But your point is well taken. All you young 'uns should be applauded for helping out. It probably made the difference.

I'm just hoping that your Zeeland heritage isn't too crippling. If history repeats itself you too will one day be proud to say you grew up in Zeeland Michigan.

I don't know if you are open to a bit of constructive critcism, but if you are, stop taking yourself so seriously.
There is nothing wrong with poking little fun of yourself or for that matter your hometown. It builds character...anybody can be cool when they are from Santa Monica.

Good luck on that term paper I'm sure you'll do well.

If the absentee ballots went the other way, then I really hope that at least the 18-25 demographic helped pass the vote. Would the City of Zeeland ever post the results...demographically speaking?

Unfortunately, I'm kind of proud to be a Chix (Chick? Horrible mascot spelling for the singular tense). Besides the hypocracy and politics, growing up wasn't too bad.

And yes, I can take constructive criticism, and your silly attacks were well recieved.

I'll be in line for the first beer in Zeeland.

People and their morals have changed sooooooo much in this secular society...I feel that people useing alcohol as a problem solver to "revenue", "people coming down town","nice restaurants" in actuality is the seed of selfishness.
Julia in Zeeland wrote:
Well, I live in Zeeland, and I think it's WAY past time to lift this ban! So do my neighbors. Jeffrey, if you honestly think Zeeland is dry now, I say you need to get out and learn the truth. We already have the 'problems'(teens drinking, drunk drivers, etc) of alcohol, but none of the 'benefits'(revenue, nice restaurant, people coming downtown). You say you will try to run the businesses out who support this, then you say you'll run the councilmen out who support this, what is next, every neighbor who doesn't agree with you? Wouldn't it be easier for you to just take your butt out of town, from the sounds of it, the only person who doesn't like the idea of alcohol in Zeeland is YOU!

As a business owner in Grand Rapids, I had the opportunity to apply for an "adult entertainment" license. We are proposing an "adult club" with an adult-only video store and theater. So far, we have not been turned down. We are excited to have this business in Zeeland and we will also be opened on Sunday, as well

Not everyone. I'm a conservative Christian Dutch guy in Zeeland, and I love beer. Many of us do. Don't paint too wide.

Hey Zeelanders, Where's that fine dining experience you were all gum flapping about??? Hmmm, yup I guess that didn't happen. Oh wait, ya got a save-a-lot. Does that count? Vatali's hasn't changed, Zeeland hardware is still barely making it, Pizza Hut doesn't serve beer and I don't see a retail buy store anywhere. All you supporters really gave the city a shot in the arm! Good JOB!!!
