She's turning into quite a diva, isn't she?

Total diva---all the lexicon does is explain her work. Give me a break. I guess being a billionaire just isn't enough. And, someone should tell her that in America it is the defendant's right to face his accusor.

I wonder if she'd be more receptive if the encylopedia publisher cut her in on the book sales?? Hey, apparently, she can't have too much money.
The info already exists on the Web site, which Rowling didn't have a problem with ... it's only when the guy actually wants to make a book and-gasp!-make a little money off of it that she suddenly feels so violated.
What a bunch of malarky!

After the total letdown of the last book, she should be extatic that she still has fans this devoted. What a witch.

Wow, so quick to dump on someone who's earned her success with a decade-plus of hard work. She said she was a fan of the website and isn't doing anything against that. And Beth, the whole point is that he's trying to make a buck off her hard work.(Though the way the article is written, it sounds more like the guy has gotten bad advice from a greedy publisher. Still, he's responsible for his own actions.)

The issue is, these people deliberately tried to run around her to increase their own profits, simple as that. You'll notice that Vander Ark made sure that there was a clause protecting him in the contract, but doesn't say anything about trying to work with her first. Had they done that at any point, this would be a different story. She certainly hasn't been shy about licensing Potter in the past.

The fact that all of the first four comments are in favor of ripping off another's efforts without compensation is kinda disturbing, to tell the truth.

That's not the point I was trying to make. It's that she didn't even want the guy in the same courtroom as her when she was giving her testimony.

As I'm not an attorney familiar with copyright law I won't comment on the case, but the fact that Rowling is requesting that Vander Ark not even be present in the courtroom when she testifies seems a bit over the top, no? I mean, really, she's sold a lot of books but who does she think she is?

I heard part of the reason she's against the publication of the encyclopedia is because it would ruin her plans to write a HP encyclopedia of her own.

Honestly, I agree with her. It would be one thing if they were including the commentary that the website includes, but they're basically just using all her information for a cause. Arguably, I suppose kudos to them for gathering so much information, but it just seems wrong that they're making money off her book without adding their own spice to it.

Well, I'd really have to see the lexicon to judge.

I just wish I could make a billion dollars from a decade-plus of hard work. My two-and-a-half decades didn't even make me a millionaire.(Sigh)...

Of course, if she's planning to come out with an encyclopedia of her own, why not partner with this guy? He's already done the heavy lifting. Makes me wonder if this is really being driven by her publisher's desire to milk the HP cash cow one more time.

"Her lawyer has arranged with the judge to have a private security guard for Rowling in the courtroom and for the author to spend breaks in the seclusion of a jury room -- away from any die-hard Potter fans in attendance."

Apparently, I read the exert a bit differently than some others here did. I read it that she requested to be secluded during the BREAKS, not during the TRIAL. That means that both parties would be present during the procedings. Not wanting to deal with mobs of people that she could forsee attending just doesn't sound that unreasonable to me.

Isn't her multi-millions enough for her?
Her desire to be protected from having to rub shoulders with her fans says enough.

Ahh the warpness money and witchcraft bring to a person.

It's not that I don't think people's work should be protected, but it seems like, in this instance, what this guy wants to do is create a reference guide from the Potter books ... reference guides, like the dictionary or encyclopedia, are not plagarizing their sources. I realize she came up with all the info, but if some dude out there wants to go to all the trouble to put it into encyclopedia form, then I think his idea has merit.
Plus, I don't see anything wrong with challenging individuals who are multimillion(billion?)aires to share a bit of their wealth with the common man.
