A smiling J.K. Rowling stepped out of a car and strode into a lower Manhattan courthouse early Monday for the start of her lawsuit against a Michigan publisher. Full Story

Good luck to Steve! I think JK Rowling is just a little greedy overall. She's ok with the website but not a book...No difference except he's going to charge for a book...and she's pissed because he's getting the loot.

She should be greedy, she 'invented' Harry Potter why should others make money off her ideas?

If Vander Ark wins and can print this book, does that open up a Pandoras box for anyone to reprint any book simply by stating it's a 'read along' or it defines the series?

How is this not a copyright violation?

I am a HUGE HP fan. JK said before the final book was released that she didn't care if anyone continued writting about HArry and his world. I understand she wants to write her own Encyclipedia. Why does she care wheat others do. He is doing it because he likes the Harry books. Everyone knows hers will have more information. Most people will buy hers over his anyway,

The case is interesting. I have a number of lexicons and dictionaries based on an author's body of work. I don't think Augustine's family is claiming infringement.

I wonder how that works.

Go Mr. VanderArk. one of the best teachers at that craphole known as Byron Center Christian Schools. He's so creative and really loved his students, unlike other teachers who think that a good solution to helping those with ADD is to lock them in an empty classroom alone. Go Steve!!!

Remember stcogr Steve? I knew you then. You do not have the right to finance your midlife crisis by stealing someone else's creation. Reread the chapter about Harry telling off Remus when he left his wife and child. If you are such a big fan learn something from the story.

Can you say greedy? How much more money does she possibly need? Get a clue women, it's not gonna hurt you little stories. Boo hoo, she can't write the next novel because of the case. What the heck, she's loosing sleep over one little case? Again, boo hoo, cry baby!!!!

This case is about much more than greed or who we hope wins. The ruling will set a precedent with regards to copyright law particularly with regards to web vs. print and new ideas vs. a summary of an existing work.

Don't be so quick to judge either side until you do a little research on intellectual property rights.

Ms. Rowling has always approved of and supported Mr. Vanderark's work on the web lexicon. Does Mr. Vanderark have the right to now publish it in print for profit? Great question. I guess we'll find out.

My personal take. It's not Rowling who is greedy. It's the publisher that she works for. I don't think she gives two hoots about Vanderark trying to earn a living off her/his creative work.

'Read Along' books are very common, there has never been a lawsuit against 'Sparknotes' or 'Cliffnotes'. They seem to be about the same style book as this. Plus, I don't buy the "I can't finish my new book because this lawsuit is stressing me out". If your that great of a writer you can write and think! Two, her lawyers have probably dealt with most of this.

I was wondering if it was legal to write a book showing what I thought would be the next events in Potter's life (or any of her characters).

As for the Lexicon, an 'official' copy would be everyone's right to see, as long as 'she' wrote it. Personal paradigmatic view is common millionfold, such as, oh I don't know 'Harry spent time practicing necromancy'.

If she were going to put a book out-
And someone was putting one out regarding its same purpose-
She does have the 1st right!-
Same as saying someone else wrote book 3!-
A lexicon or similar dictionary is 'in line' when series are involved.-
Been done, had that, the end!.

Maybe JK Rowling should remember where she came from standing in a welfare line to get food , now she has hundreds of millions of dollars . maybe she should of came up with a compromise instead of getting greedy ,this is going to do nothing but make her look bad and i am wondering how much this will hurt her next 2 films ?
also she may of created the original program but the one from michigan created the things he is being sued over .
now JK Rowlings greed wants to take his creation away ... and

its sad ... rags to riches and another proof ...

The love of money is the root of ALL evil .

Maybe Ms. Rowlings is having trouble making ends meet like the rest of us.
