How do you know this was unfair? Did you apply for that position and get turned away - yet were qualified? I do not understand you saying that without explaining your reasons.

I agreed that it is unfair. The county government (there to serve the public) didn't have to advertise the positions for guards but do for other county jobs (according to Ms Graham). I have seen jobs posted on a bulletin board in the hallway of government center. I know of a guard at Allegheny County Jail (lives in Butler) that might have wanted to be employed by Butler to reduce his driving time. The jobs were not advertised but given to those of who you know. I have lost confidence in the county government that can build a new prison without proper supervision of the construction mangement company that cost the county alot of money and time. Meanwhile they are trying to sell Sunnyview because of cost. At the very start of the idea of actually building a prison why wasn't a local engineer (Mr. Gray perhaps) hired to over see on behalf of the county?

Does anyone know how the applicants DID hear about these jobs if they were not posted with the others in government center? That is a good first step in sorting this out.

This is a normal employment practice within Butler County. Richard Shaffer is in charge of security at the prison. Has been for years. He is related to Butler common pleas Judge William Shaffer, and his brother, District Justice Pete Shaffer.

The new prison will continue to run like the old one, a business for profit. They have a 42 million dollar nut to pay on the new prison. It won't get paid cleaning up the town. Crime pays and it pays well.

The most important criteria to meet to get the job was be a republican. As was finding out about the job. All courthouse employees except one are republican. I believe that all state, local and municipal police are carefully scrutinized to be republican too in Butler.

Seriously, in Butler County most of the citizens are related to someone in a position of authority either through blood or marriage. I'm surprised they were able to find 9 applicants that were not related in some way. They must have brought them in from Pittsburgh.

And how did you not know they were hiring guards for the huge prison they just finished building? Did you just assume that the building was just going to be there for aesthetic purposes? The listing for these jobs has been and is still available on the county web site. I suppose if you were too lazy or too stupid to look it up that would mark you as unqualified right there.

And no, I'm not a republican. I am a life long democrat that is tired of hearing people whine about how unfair life is when they refuse to do anything to change their situation. Though I probably shouldn't since you have already shown you are unqualified through your ignorance I am listing a link to the job posting below!

And if I don't like my job I'll go get another one. And if I don't make enough to feed my family I'll get a second job, then a third job. Lazy Lazy people sucking off the government tit!

way to many people in Butler on welfair driving around in $30,000 cars. Buying cigarettes with an access card.

If you can breath you can get out and make a nickle. don't tell me you need a connection.

Would anyone like to share with me the reasoning for building a bigger jail when we are still housing many inmates out of Butler County. I know 5 inmates being housed at Armstrong county jail and we as taxpayers are paying a bigger bill there. Just wondering what the reason is.

You say connections, I say references.
If a friend or relative of mine worked at a job I'm applying for, you had best believe I am going to use that person as a reference! This way the employer can ask the relative or friend face-to-face what he/she thinks of the applicant, will they be a good worker/employee? If this employee feels comfortable enough to stick their neck out for the applicant, it's a good sign that they'll be a good employee. But this is worthless if they don't have the skills or requirements.

The old prison is already way over capacity and has been for years. It was originally built to house less than 100. THAT is why prisoners are held in other counties. Have you seen the old prison? It's tiny! It's not just full of cells in there. There's a kitchen, a laundry room, offices, prisoner's personal item storage, the list goes on. Yeah, this new prison is huge. Agreed. Had you taken a tour, available to anyone prior to it actually housing prisoners, every Thursday at 4:00pm, you could have had your eyes opened to how necessary this new prison is.

Thats BS! These worthless THUGS they call CO's were just handed the job! Why were the jobs not advertised? It happens in every form of Butler County Government. If mommy and daddy do not work for the county, then your screwed. How bout the benefits they reportedly got? This town is a joke and cant wait to get the hell out of it.

i say start the death penalty that way there will be more room and we wouldn't have to waste our money on them by giving them a new jail. what happen to the city suppose to be fixing the creek. i live right next to it and they haven't done anything! plus last year i called the city up to remove a tree on city property that was leaning so far over it was almost touching the road. They still haven't done anything with it! then they fix roads that don't need done and leave the ones that need done alone! those government people don't do crap for the public!

Daily Horoscope for January 3

Cancer

No one can accuse you of being a wallflower today! The modern cowboy or cowgirl has a tendency to shoot from the lip and you won't be afraid to tell it like it is. Your response will be quick, and your timing near perfect. If you don't accomplish what you set out to do this morning by the end of the day, it won't be for lack of trying. Getting an 'A' for effort is sometimes better than facing the test.
