the staff @ summit academy goes out and looks for the escapees for HOURS before notifying the police of an escape. HOURS! makes me angry. that's time for the citizens of herman to be potencial victims. they should have to report to police as soon as the boy escapes.
By law they must notify State Police within 15min.

Don't let him go to Summit Academy Reform School whatever you do. Bad place. Lots of fights between kids from different areas. Not safe. Anybody out there remember that Summit Academy guard "Big Lou" who was crazy. I think he got fired for too much "hands-on" with the inmates. I'd love to run into that sorry dude one time in a dark alley. I'd even the score for all the inmates he did wrong. To all mothers out there - "STAY AWAY FROM SUMMIT ACADEMY AT ALL COSTS"

From reading this and knowing both students and staff, the ones that are complaining are the students who obviously do not want or did not make the change. They did not take the time to learn what the school had to offer. Also there is a student there now who came back to change his life. This place is a refuge for some who know they can't make it out there or have no opportunity. So you make the choice. I would recommend this place.

Here's a no brainer. Don't get arrested and you won't have to worry about "staff" or "summit academy".

When it comes down to that type of "people," they can never take the blame for their own actions... They always forget how they got there in the first place and whine and cry because someone (aka the staff) are trying to do them wrong.

Dont get arrested and you'll never have to worry about it.

I currently am a staff member on the drug and alcohol floors in the summit academy. First of all, if you are female, DO NOT WORK THERE. the issue isnt the kids or there age, its the sexist attitude from staff and the double standards you experience day to day. If you dont mind being called a bitch by staff just because youre female, then go right ahead.

The program is a joke, counselors are told to LIE, and BS our work just so we can fill out paperwork on time. The kids spend more time watching movies that glorify drugs and alcohol then doing anything related to their diseases.

Also, these kids are almost constantly being hurt. Just yesterday, a supervisor just hurt a kid so badly he sent him to the hospital. Im leaving for this reason, Summit is supposed to be a completely 100% hands off facility. Its disgusting and sad what actually goes on here.

Since when was it a hands off facility????? When I worked there a kid tried to stab a staff member with a spade shaped drill bit. Try to tell that guy to be 100% hands off.
The program isnt what it should be, I agree with that... as for kids being physically abused, I'll have to disagree with you totally on that one.
I cant comment on female staff members because there were none when I worked there.
To be honest, I believe that women shouldnt be allowed counseling contact with the students purely based on the fact that those aren't good kids in there and they can lie and say one of the women made sexual advances towards them.
Thats just too much that can go wrong.

It amazes me that when you do 100 good deeds, people focus on 1 miss-step.
To Leaving Shortly,
how long have you worked there? probably not long enough to see the positive effects that are accomplished. My guess is that you have an axe to grind.

I would not like to put too much information about myself on here but i know someone who was recently placed in summit.however he is at the "academy" right now.why do they place the boys at the academy for 30 days before placing them at summit?is it to ween out the ones the are serious from the ones who are not?& also,he has said this place was alot different then any other place he has been in.he said the staff has been getting very physical with the kids.but he is trying to keep his distance.his PO has told him he will probably be in summit for about 6-9 months.but the staff at the academy told him she was "lying" to him and he will really be doing a year or so.is this true if he does what he is supposed to do?i thought they keep u longer if u dont do what ur supposed to do..and sometimes they kick you out of the program if they dont think u are benefiting from it?and also, the state has to pay alot of money for these kids to be there..so if they are doing well ny 9 months..why keep them for 12??any answers is greatly appreciated.
