Need Info wrote: Can anyone tell me more about the school environment at Summit Academy? I am thinking about applying there. Do they have many female teachers? Would it be very difficult for a female teacher to work in that school environment? How many kids are in each class? Do they have a support staff/behavior specialist in the room with the teacher? Thanks for the info. Hey I was there bout 2 years ago n got released last august, to answer your questions, there's about 25 kuds in a class all depending though. There are a few female staff there but mainly in the main office. There is no behavior specialist but if a fight starts other teachers will assist u. Most kids won't give a shit what your saying or doing unless your giving them something worth their time. The teachers are nice for the most part. Alot of new teachers won't last more than two months tho. Hope my info helps u.

Thanks sherle. I dont recommend a female being a teacher there. I also doubt if theyd hire one. Nothing against women, but there is no in room help in case things would get out of hand. Its not really a good teaching environment either. Since theres no help, the kids are a real problem and it could be unsafe for you. I found it to be more than likely unsafe even for a male teacher really. I always thought that there should be support staff in the room.

Some of our own public schools have abusive staff on a daily basis. Especially verbal abuse. If you do not believe that can happen, society needs to look into all these public schools,& reform facilities. I wish I had the opportunity to speak of things I know about, not to cause to problems, but to attempt to solve one. We have a hateful nation and our kids become victimized in all directions.

i grew up in the area and my friend used to live across from the "school". I was there every day and we used to hear screams at night coming from a academy owned field behind some woods. my opinion is they beat the hell out of them. and the school doesnt report excapees.. ever..

I left summit about a year ago with a lot of success. I got my high school diploma there was a captain on the football team and got to go to many events in pittsburgh. It was a great time for me simply if you dont cause problems u wont have any. I now attend Shippensburg University entering my second year with a 3.4 GPA. They also gave me $2000 for school. I learned many things there from the staff there and I feel that I went form a boy to a man. There was some a$$hole staff there but u just have to stay away from them and create friendships with the cool ones.

Listen i spent three years in places like that...i have been in every type of placement there is from bootcamps to group homes..these places vary. some places you will get nothing from but an a$$ whoopin on a regular basis.. other places you learn everything you need to grow and be the best man/woman you can be! yeah there are some staff that seriously show up to work just to be a jerk to whoever crosses their path! like i was in Pathways Adolecent Center and got my a$$ beat on a regular basis!!!! but i was also in George JR and Adelphoi village at Falcon View...those places set me straight!! those places like Pathways just made me hate my life and everyone around me so i would get into fights with staff and resident alike just to try and get F.T.A.d (Failure To Adjust) that means kicked out..but when i came to my last few stops like George JR and Adelphoi i changed very quick because they hire people that care and try to work with you no matter how difficult you are..they dont just give up after a few weeks...they drill it into you that someone actually gives a $hiT about you...me parents were both drug addicts and neither of them wanted to take me thats why i stayed so long...i didnt get out until i was a legal adult..ive seen it all..ive seen kids get there faces beat in and slammed on their heads...and ive also seen staff hold kids while they cried because their parents wouldnt come get them when they were supposed to go on home passes for holidays or weekends, or would hang up on them when they called or were to high to even remember that they had kids...and ive seen some kids try to murder staff members with pieces of tile they broke off the bathroom walls or shank them because they got reprimanded for skrewing off and seen some staff get really hurt in the process, some even hospitalized in critical condition because there wasnt anyone around to help when some psycopath gang member or drug dealer got pissed because they got told what to do...so if you dont know what its like to be in those kind of situation you have no buisness giving your opinion on any of this...you might have worked with kids but not like some of these kids...alot of these "inner-city" kids have no concience at all they have been brought up that way and nothing you do or say is going to change that...

[QUOTE who="bernie"I need info on this place rite away. My sister's only boy has gottin into a lil bit of trouble in Philly and he mite be sent to this place in Hermann,PA. Is this close to Butler? Or Pittsburg? I've heard its sort of like a boot camp only they wear ties and coats to make it look like something it reelly ain't. Just a front kinda thing to missleed folks whose kids get sentenced there. Some people I know in state corrections say its a little like Glenn Mills School, only not as good and rougher with lots of hands on punishment. Is it true that they were on a provizional lisence about a year or too or three ago? Somethin about a kid's face bein smashed into a window and a kid dying without the mother being contactted by these people at Summit. Some folks from around hear in York say he should go to Glenn Mills insted. Wood like to hear from anyone whos son or granson was there or those who atended there. Is it true if sentensed there you have to do 1 to 2 yeers? Maybe even 3 years? Any issues of concern in methids of physical punnishment? [/QUOTE]am sorry but glen mill school is not the school to send any one chid to cause i was punished in ways that no one should be i was beaten by staff and trown out the back door.and i couldn't even call home to my parents to let them know. that school is horriable.its not what you think.i did three year in this hell hole. and when your nephew do something wrong' yes he will be dealt with harshly.please dont send him there...

Summit is a decent place the Schooling sucks but what can u expect glen mills has better school though. I've been to both and Summit is a lot eaisier to due time at as for 1 to 2 years it depends on what county and his po. But bids are for 9-12 months I had a 6-9 months but I stayed for 10 so I could graduate. As for the phsical punishment the first month is rough at the academy but once at summit you should be fine unless u mess up. I wasn't touched once. And if u play a sport time will be even easier. I had a lot of good times there i was able to go pirates penguens and other special events and games. I also went on college vists and I am in my second year at shippensburg u. As for schooling if you ask them for harder work they will give it u. And they have special teacher for students that really wanna learn since most of the kids there just wanna get back on the streets. But they will do everything to help u out if u want so they can have success stories like me to make the place look better. But over all this place is better and it is right ouside of buttler in herman pa and not that far from pittsburgh

Man I use to be at the one in Pittsburgh. All I know is that they be messin up dudes. Slamming them into walls and staff are careless drivers (they be getting into accidents and fighting kids on the van). One of the main staff members is an a-hole. He talks about good behavior, but when he gets mad he is quick to toss a boy across the room. Bottom line is this place is dangerous and it does not teach you anything! I was in the D&A program there and all they gave me were worksheets and told me to shut up! Come on I can do that at home on house arrest!

I am a former student of summit academy. spent a few years there and I agree with you on a few things, one being the hands on treatment.Ive only been involved in this one time and I learned when to keep my mouth shut. it seemed to me like the certian staff were waiting for the students to talk back or get out of line, its almost like they were on a power trip. Yeah I graduated but did I really learn anything no not really, just that I wanted to go home. some things were good as well as certian staff. would i do it all over again no!!!

Mike wrote: I Personally attended their in 2001 into 2002, I can tell you that. going away from my home here in york, it did help isolate me from the negative environment that was going to end up in a train wreck of a life but...they can be very aggressive and physical with the kids, I personally was never touched because I was their little star who they actually wanted to extend to force me to graduate from their school, I wanted to come back home and graduate from my hs, they offered to make me valedictorian and all, but I have witnessed countless kids get thrown into walls, dragged over auditorium seats, I saw kids jump a guy in the bathroom and throw a blanket over him and beat him unconscious, some of the staff are injured ex-steelers players!! this place shows a front to all looking in from the outside, we would be forced to take cold 3 minute showers. and if the floor was misbehaved they believed heavily on group accountability and would reduce that time, the sanction unit is where he will go first for at least 30 days, they don't call it that to you guys really that they just call "the academy" which is right in Pittsburgh, then you go to summit. that place is the worst you will wash your hair with watered down hand soap, actually you wash down everything with it come to think of it. there is where they break you basically. everything is yes sir, no sir, may i step in sir? step out sir? and that is where the staff REALLY handles the kids don't get me wrong 9 out of 10 times the kid deserved punishment because of what they did, but not ever do they deserve to get thrown into walls and bloodied up the way they are. they do go out of there way though for the kids at the same time though, trying to help those who are trying their hardest not to be helped. It took all I had to isolate myself from the low life's that surrounded me. the food is great and will likely be the best food your kid has ever ate. they literally do have a chef creating it. and the sports really help also. they focus very heavily on them and you will be treated better if you take part. i have said good and bad here about summit but i will tell you it is MUCH better than your sons alternatives, this place is like a day spa compared to the descriptions from others of what the other institutions are really like from people that have been there. Summit put me on the right track and I now have a successful career in the financial industry making six figures in a way as much as I do hate summit at the same time they helped shape my life and get me back on track for which I am eternally grateful for. I wish your son the best of luck and tell him if doesn't isolate himself the other kids will drag him under and he will be there much longer as they say the state pays them $90 per day per kid for being there..they love to hand out extensions, I was released after 7 months so if he trys it can be quicker than 1-2 years. hope this was good insight. are you a tall white boy with big ears?
