TV Question

Ashland, KY

I have a friend from Whitley City who says they pick up CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox and a few other channels in high definition off their old fashioned outdoor TV antenna. They said theirs is a long range (100 mile) antenna. Could this be true or are they pulling my leg? If it is true, why aren't more people getting free TV instead of paying cable or satellite?

TV stations are a lot stronger than they were years ago, It is not good for the cable company for you to know this, I have radio shack antenna I get 14 channels clear as a bell. But you need to have a TV repair man check your location with a field strenth meter hope this helps ,antennas are a lot better than they were years ago.

"FYI", what channels do you get? We're in a very secluded and rural area, so it's doubtful if it would be beneficial to my own household, but I'm curious if you don't mind answering.

I wish the cable/satellite providers would get with the "program" and offer packaging bundles for viewers. That way you could order (and only have to pay for) the channels you choose. For instance, I'd keep Discovery Channel, SciFi, our local channels, and a few other educational broadcasts. There are so many channels on my provider lists that I never tune in to.

I honestly believe if any one of the providers would begin to offer that option in the future, they'd make millions in added subscriber accounts.

Yeah, it can be done but you must have a high-quality antenna, in great shape and one intended for use in whats call a "fringe" area. A booster would not hurt either.

And remember, since we've went digital, you'll need a digital conversion box as well.

About the digital conversion box, that is you need one if you have an older non-digital ready television.

If your set is digital-ready, then skip that part.

Here in the Oak Ridge / Knoxville area, most any good quality antenna will do but since you guys are that far north from us and that far south from Lexington, that is why a "fringe" antenna is your best bet for your area.

Now, think I'm done now.

i have a little uhf antenna strapped to the side of my chimney about 35' above the ground. i bought a signal booster and put on it.

i'm in the western side of pulaski co and get all of the Lex stations, fox 56, and KET. i think there are 2 to 3 channels at each station. i've never tried knoxville. i don't have a rotator on the antenna and would have to climb up and move the antenna around, i think.

one thing about digital tv, either you have a signal and get tv or you don't. there's no such thing like in the old days where you could get a signal that was watchable but had a lot of snow and ghosts.

since you obviously have internet connection, consider the on-line programming. there is tons of stuff there. the little rabbit TV thingie they sold at walmart last winter for $10 has a lot of stuff.

anyway, hope this helps, best i can do right now.
