I am doing a research paper on drug addicted newborns, and I can't find this answer for the life of me, what type of drug tests do they perform on the newborns here, urine, blood, placenta or meconium?

I would guess a blood test but you might get a better detailed answer if you call the labor and delivery and inform them that you are doing a research paper and ask them your questions.

I would like to know if they drug test ALL newborns or just those they suspect/have been reported?

Meconium was what was used when I was a Social Worker. When it was reported the report always said the drugs were detected that way.

Good question, I'm not really sure but if someone has the answer to that question, that would be a good detail to add into my report..

Do you have any children? Do you not remember when they cut their heel open and perform all kinds of blood tests?

Cut their heel open? I have four and they never had their heel cut open. They had blood drawn and shots given in their heels but never cut open.:-/

It's called a PKU test, and the heel is not actually "cut". All newborns receive this test whether you all are aware of it or not. It's a very routine blood test in which the heel is merely tapped with a lancet, much the same as is done to your own finger tip if you're a diabetic, etc. With a PKU test, the drops of the blood are then placed consecutively onto a square of paper for the actual testing at the lab.

(PKU = Phenylketonuria).

thank you for the information, but are you absolutely sure because I really don't want to turn in an inadequate paper.

You're very welcome. I have performed literally hundreds of not only the PKU tests, but other blood tests on newborns and premature infants as well. Anyway, here is a link for you that will probably help out a lot while this particular procedure at least:
http://www.webmd.com/parenting/baby/phenylket...

(Below are a few quick reference pointers for you that were taken from that site as well)

~~ Why It Is Done

A phenylketonuria (PKU) test is done to see whether a newborn baby has the enzyme needed to use phenylalanine in his or her body.

It is important to test your baby for PKU soon after birth to prevent brain damage. Phenylalanine blood levels in a baby with PKU start to rise within 24 hours of drinking breast milk or formula. A PKU test done 2 to 3 days after birth will show whether your baby has PKU.

~~ How To Prepare

Your baby should be drinking breast milk or formula for 24 hours before the blood sample is taken. PKU test results are more likely to be correct if the blood sample is taken after the baby has been drinking milk or formula for at least 48 hours.

If your baby is older than 6 weeks, he or she may have a PKU urine test. You do not need to do anything before your baby has this test.

~~ How It Is Done

Your baby's heel is cleaned with alcohol and then the heel is poked with a small needle. Several drops of blood are collected inside circles on a special piece of paper. When enough blood has been collected, a small bandage is put on the site.

Yeah but just because its old doesn't mean they don't still use it, or do you know of a newer one?

They also do the first urine. It's done for babies who are born to mothers who received late prenatal care and/or they suspect drug use. Just had a friend go through this not ling ago because of late care. Her home test kept showing negative and when she decided to go to the doctor, she was 15 weeks.
