The chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board said Saturday that the bridge collapse in Washington state is a wake-up call for the U.S. "This is a really significant event and we need to learn from it, not just in Washington but around the country," Debbie Hersman said after taking a boat ride on the Skagit River below the dramatic scene ... I say let private companies build them if the stuff that the union builds falls apart if a fly lands on it.

Erm, one thing, the companies are paid, by the government, to build them. The other is that if the private companies were allowed to own them, in other words no public funding for them to be built, they'd charge tolls for them all, they'd have to in order to regain the costs. Either way, you are paying for a private company to build it, the question is whether you want the government to negotiate a discount for the toll, or if you want to have to deal with keeping change in your car at all times.

Well, someone screwed the pooch since the route for an over-sized load has to be planned and approved. Pretty hard to blame the driver on this one.
And just how bad was the condition of the bridge that an "impact" that barely scratched the load's paint, could bring that bridge down?

President Obama has been a proponent of rebuilding our infrastructure since he came into Office; and the right has done everything to stop any improvements to this nation’s roads, bridges, power grids and water supply. Their hard line stance against spending coupled with their hate for President Obama and their determination not to give the President any “political victories” is putting Americans lives at risk.

Obamma has given more money to his free cell phones for the obamma followers than he earmarked for Infrastructure support.

It's all about priorities.

Why open the floodgates for criminal illegals at an unemployment of 8%?

No household in America could BUDGET their personal economic use the way these democrats have !

Thats right he did. Most of the money earmarked in a 900 billion dollar print up by the federal reserve was supposed to go for this when he gave a speech in the spring of 2009. Most of the money went to pay off his voters. The unions, the collectors and such. Yeah...a true story...The media stays silent in these things.

Figures.

You would be the DUMBSHIT teabagger that made the mudFLAT comment.

Has the Obama administration started a program to use "taxpayer money" to give free cell phones to welfare recipients?

No. Low-income households have been eligible for discounted telephone service for more than a decade. But the program is funded by telecom companies, not by taxes, and the president has nothing to do with it.

MORE than a decade?

Who was president?

Poor teabagger.

Interesting but confusing in one part it say's this:

Last year, a federal program PAID out $1.6 billion to cover free cell phones and the monthly bills of 12.5 million wireless accounts. The program, overseen by the FCC and intended to help low-income Americans, is popular for obvious reasons, with participation rising steeply since 2008, when the government PAID $772 million for phones and monthly bills. But observers complain that the program suffers from poor oversight, in which phones go to people who don’t qualify, and hundreds of thousands of those who do qualify have more than one phone.

Then it say's this:

The program came to be after the Telecommunications Act of 1996 was passed, and the FCC created the Universal Service Fund to help “to promote the availability of quality services at just, reasonable, and affordable rates,” among other things. All telecommunications carriers must pay into the fund, and many do so by tacking on a fee to each of their customers’ bills. It’s probably added into your monthly wireless bill and your landline bill, if you still have one.

The Universal Service Fund provides discounts on phone services, or in some cases, entirely free services to low-income Americans. The fund helps pay for landlines or cell phones, whichever the recipient prefers. There’s also a one-time discount of up to $30 to cover an installation fee or a cell phone. Considering how cheap some cell phones are nowadays, the money more than covers the costs of a basic phone. Then, the fund covers phone bills to the tune of $10 a month, which typically translates as 250 minutes for wireless plans of the types of phones we’re talking about. Americans who receive food stamps, Medicaid, or other federal aid, or who earn up to 135% of the federal poverty guidelines, qualify for the program.

So the way it sounds, it is a private/public funded program.

Since 1985, the Lifeline program has provided a discount on phone service for qualifying low-income consumers to ensure that all Americans have the opportunities and security that phone service brings, including being able to connect to jobs, family and emergency services. In 2005, Lifeline discounts were made available to qualifying low-income consumers on pre-paid wireless service plans in addition to traditional landline service. Lifeline is part of the Universal Service Fund.(see above)

On January 31, 2012, the Commission adopted comprehensive reform and modernization of the Lifeline program. As a universal service program that fulfills Congress’s mandate to ensure the availability of communications to all Americans, Lifeline for the past 25 years has helped tens of millions of low-income Americans afford basic phone service. Access to telephone service is essential for finding a job, connecting with family, or getting help in an emergency, and the percentage of low-income households with phone service has increased from 80% in 1985, when Lifeline began, to nearly 92% last year.

And from all appearances are going to continue to fight every step of the way. Never mind the infrastructure should be something that both parties should be willing to talk about and work together on. But the republican/tea party have yet to get the message. Their guy lost. Now is the time to do right by the country. Not worry about who is in the White house.

Was the bridge just sitting there (unsecured by bolts) on the cement pilings waiting for a truck or earthquake to knock it off it's perch? It seems a bit primitive.

Someone needs to keep a closer eye on how the stimulus money is being spent. Maybe there is someway to get a Government/Private Enterprise collaboration on infrastructure
