I have been in law enforcement 28 years. That itself is not a qualify alone for a Police Chief. However I have over 1000 hrs or professional training in law enforcement practice, supervision, major crimes in a fairly larger town in Pennsylvania. I was an applicant for the town of Crewe and told by the mayor my resume stood out way beyond all others. Interviews were set up, I took days off, canceled plans on a townhouse rental since for all intents and purposes and good conversation with the mayor I was led to believe they wanted someone who would stay and assist in officer retention. Then an email comes 3 days before the interview to "show me the town and meet the council" simply canceling me and informing another person was picked the week before.

The reason I write this is to get a fix on what I was dealing with there in the first place, what kind of show they are running that about put me out of work and let the town know the unprofessional manner in which the last week was handled. I want to make it clear I was never offered a job there directly, but certainly the mayor's conversation with me stopped just short of saying that. Regardless, good luck to your town. I'm just thankful the Lord was looking over our family enough to keep from going there as much as we would have liked to.

I wish you the best of luck too, sometimes we cannot know that things always work out for the best. Perhaps you could get a job in Farmville. I am sure there are places that could use a good investigator.

Thank you. You have good people and a beautiful area we've been to a lot of times. I have other irons in the fire, but preferred your location, even for less money and smaller area. Bigger isn't always better. My complaint is the unprofessional way it was handled. Guess I wouldn't do that....there are those that do. And one knows exactly what I'm talking about. God bless!

You basically have to be born in Crewe as well as be in the sand box with the big boys. Crewe is a back water town that will never be right until the correct people run the Town, not a certain few to run it.

You should feel lucky that you won't be in Crewe. Everything is unprofessional in Crewe. The Town Council doesn't even want a grocery store in this so called "Town". The word "change" is not in the vocabulary here. Anyone in law in Crewe, they don't work in the department long because my guess is they see how dirty it really is. That tells you something right there. Stay in civilization. All you find in Crewe is drug deals and citations.

Have you thought about writing a local newspaper on this matter letting others know how the Mayor handled this? I'm curious to see what would be said. It's quite obvious that you are mad on not getting the job and everything that you had to do to prepare for this.

Try Brookneal, the new chief there will be hiring another police officer. Brookneal is gorgeous, it was the first place to start a rescue squad in the United States.

My preparation for this was because of initial talks, it sounded (I'll never say done deal) but unless there were serious issues with me, my resume, which is substantial because simply of the area I work was in his words "far above anyone else". My bad I guess for taking it as it was a 90% deal. They wanted a contract and someone who would stay, which was all good for me. I suggested five. I don't know, from what you'all say maybe they were scared of changes. Good luck to the new Chief. There's a difference in wanting to pick up the phone and being able to say, "Chief Smith" and being qualified to say "Chief anything". You get what you pay for. And you pay for what you get.

Thank the good Lord that you weren't hired! You definitely are blessed that you did not get caught up in the "horse and pony show" that goes on here in this town. The only thing the Crewe PD is good for is directing traffic to the school every morning, and holding up the frame of the local Fas Mart!

As my name says I am new to the Crewe but have already had large dealings with the "police chief" I have been told he was only hired cause his father was on the Town Council. The Chief threw his finger in my face and talked trash about my husband just slandering him (we will be dealing with that legally shortly) Most of the so called cops here have been fired from another police department including the chief. Got one that killed the high school principle's husband from farmville that would not assist me when I needed him to - he was too busy riding around town with his girlfriend in the car with him. He just walked away from me when I asked him for his help. The Chief did call me to apologize after I called the Mayor and the chief and this deputy did admit to doing so and said he let his emotions take over regarding the case we have pending now - but that he should have helped me. Crewe does not have very high standards when it comes to hiring their staff at the police department here. We have been to the newspaper about some of our issues and after court when its all cleared we will go again for the whole story. I dont think Crewe will ever find a man like Billy Abel. He loves this town and the people in it. Like it has been said this town will NOT get any better until the crewe police department has a complete "makeover" and Nottoway needs to get rid of the so called "commonwealth attorney" He's only on your side if your under the age of 25 female blonde hair and blue eyes!!!

It seems like you really dont know anything about the Crewe Police Department or its police officers. As you stated that the "police chief" was only hired because his dad was on the Town Council, his father was never on the Town Council. Also not all the officers were fired from another department. As you said you are new to the town you shouldnt always listen to what you hear cause its not all true. It sounds like you just have a problem with the law. Since you are putting down police and the Commonwealth Attorneys office.

Well looks like you got your wish. Nottoway has gotten rid of its Commonwealth's Attorney. He's new Judge of the General District Court.

Actually no.. I have never been in trouble with the law other than a speeding ticket!! I was informed that was the reason his father was running for town council to help protect his sons job - It wont be long!!! There are 3 that I personally know of that have been fired from another dept so I do know a bit about it. We wont name names or why they were fired.. My issue was that when I needed assistance from the law enforcement here they decided to slander my husband and walk away. If you had told a police office someone obviously had broken into your house and you want him to check it before you and your children go in there and he wants to play 20 questions then get in the police car with his girlfriend and drive her around instead of helping you - you would probably feel the same way. That is not the way to protect the residents of crewe. Where I came from is a small county as well and my grandfather was the magistrate until he retired a few years ago, and my mom is a paralegal at the only law office in town so I've pretty much been around the legal system my whole life. I dont think there is a cop in that county that would have done what this one did. You should not let you "emotions take over" as the chief told me this officer did when he called to apologize. So they do know they were in the wrong.

Crewe PD is a joke. They are bought and paid for by the rich citizens. I have had few dealings with them but when I did they had no desire to here what I had to say. Only to force their version of the law on others.

Luckily I only had to live in crewe a little over a year - that was entirely too long I must stay! lol but just wanted to make a comment regarding the latest issue with Crewe PD and Officer Merritt - Funny how hes being charged with the EXACT same thing Crewe Police Chief was fired from Lunenburg for doing!!! Hopefully one day Crewe will wake up and make the changes needed!!

I think these forums are great for people to have a place to vent but it amazes me how much false information gets spread around on these things. Id like to clear the record just a little. The Crewe Police Chief has never worked for Lunenburg or anywhere in Lunenburg County. He has never been fired from any Police Department. He has worked for Blackstone Police Department where he resigned from his position (Look it up on Blackstone Police Departments Web page), and he worked for Nottoway Sheriff's Office.

Lets talk about some positive things the Crewe Police Department has done since the new Chief took over. I know people aren't as passionate about good news as they are about bad news but hey lets see if any one comments on the good! I can think of a few good things starting with a Christmas Parade that I can now take me kids to without fear of dealing with fights and drunks. National Night out where the Police Department provides free games and activities for the kids including a movie outside when it gets dark, free food and drinks for anyone who comes. I think these are great things that they have done for the Town of Crewe.
