NO THEY WILL NEVER!!

They had rather Tenn. prosper from all the tax revenue. Some of the "SO CALLED CHRISTIANS OF BURKESVILLE"not all,but there is some that drink everyday, but doesn't want anyone to know it.

That certain little group of people doesn't want more BUISNESSES, JOBS, OR TAX REVENUE.

Everyone knows if you want alcohol you can buy it LEAGAL OR NOT.

I've known alcohlics all my life and they have never had any problem finding a drink in this county if they wanted it.

I'm not saying I'm for it or against it,
but what I would like to know is,
how would it make the people of Cumberland County extra revenue?

Lots of taverns and beer parlors have had to close because of lawsuits for serving someone that was drunk and had a wreck.

Will those type businesses prosper in Burkesville or will there be a sports bar or what will bring in the extra revenue?

why would they not prosper?

If a buisness opens, they would have to pay city and county taxes, i would think. At the least it would create a few more jobs. Every place that i have saw,
"THAT HAS BEEN VOTED WET", has seem to prosper.

The only wet this county needs is RAIN. And thank God we are getting rain.

I have to ask this question. All you people wanting a wet county. Why don't you move to a wet county? No I am not trying to run anyone off but I dont understand why there is so much talk about this and most folks don't want it. I moved from a wet county and I really quiet enjoy this one.

That is what is wrong with Burkesville now, people have to leave to find jobs and such, IF it was wet at least people would not have to drive to get the alchol. I don't drink but people who do don't have a problem with getting it where ever they can. Looks like this would help keep them off the streets a little more. At least they wouldn't have to drive so far to get it. And lets face it if someone, Kid or otherwise wants to drink they are going to get it, and if you have to drive to get it they don't care. Why can't we just make Cumberland County wet and keep the money here instead of letting it go to other counties?

Will going wet solve all the problems with the economy here in CC? No! Will it help? Yes! When we moved here several years ago, it seemed quaint[sp] that this was a "dry" area. We soon discovered that there was no less drinking here than we witnessed in the City. Guess this goes back to moonshining when Ma dragged everyone to church on Sunday, everyone but Pa who was back in the hollar working the still.

This county needs jobs and I have been outspoken that there is an opportunity that to date has been largely ignored in CC. Hundreds of thousand tourist travel thru Bville every year. Vacationers coming from the midwest down 65 have to pass thru on their way to the lakes. Tourist drink and tourist eat out. Restaurants make more money from the bar than from the food. Add liquor sales to CC and I suspect you would see 1 or 2 restaurants. These restaurants would pay taxes and create jobs. I know Comrade Dave that there would only be a few jobs created, but by getting these people to stop in our town rather than just driving thru they will spend money here. Lady Truth has a valid point also. Right now people drive to Celina to buy booze and unfortunately often don't wait until they get home to crack a bottle. Sell it here and you cut the driving and also get the benefit of the retail sales revenue. "Dry" is a myth from the past. Booze is here its just under the table. Hope this gets a hearing and a vote.

Forget it!! It will not happen..If we had Casual Dining Restaurants waiting to open if they could get liquor license....I could understand. The only use for liquor license in the county would be a few package stores. Face reality...

"Forget it" has made very good points.

And with the package stores, we will have an area like around the "Sugar Shack" and the drinking and driving will be concentrated in our area. I say, no thanks, to getting the package stores.

I would support a law/ordinance to let restaurants sell beer by the glass.

Who would have thunk!! Maybe there is hope.

The point here is not booze or no booze. Booze and drinking is here and always has been, the only issue is whether local merchants and the taxpayers will benefit from it. Sure a package store or 2 will crop up [I'm betting on the T&T - Great location] but those can be policed. Who knows how many casual restaurants have bypassed Bville because of this issue? We will never know. Again, all anyone has to do is sit on the square or at the light any weekend and count the vehicles with boats and campers. If these people are here for more than 2 or 3 days, they are always looking for a place to eat out. Throw in beer and wine and believe me they will come! If this area was truely dry [sales and consumption] opponents would have an argument. But it isn't folks.

Citizen - Does this mean I have to put you on the Christmas card list?

How is this different than Burkesville? I mean there are a bunch of empty stores around there and buildings that are either being closed or should be.

Why not? For years we have been dry, only in the sense of legally dry. We need the revenue, jobs, etc... There are lots of people that come thru here to the lake. Those people bring deep pockets. Take advantage of that. Wet would mean 1 or 2 package stores. Why does this have to be a bad thing? I can picture a restaurant on the river. BEAUTIFUL and BOUNTIFUL. How about dining on the lake? People would spend millions per year at these locations. We are talking possibly 50 to 100 new jobs. Lets face it we need the jobs. The world has changed, we need to change with it. This is not a bad thing, it's a needed thing.

I think that in one of the last elections, someone was brave enough to put the wet/dry on the ballot. The ads in the paper were horendous. Everyone was so divided on this issue. The church people with wild with advertising basically saying we'd all go to hell if wet got voted in. I grew up around alcohol all my life, living in a big city and see more liquor around here that I every did anywhere else. You just can't get past the old timers in this county, who whink dringing or alcohol is nothing but a sin....These good, church going people don't want the county to go wet. As long as they have a vote, revenue or not, we will never get the liquor law passed.

Here is a good time to tell the Church to mind their own damn business. Regardless of the good or the bad of having a county that is wet/dry if the only reason that you aren't doing it is because it will make church people cry then that is a poor reason.

If people that go to church don't want to drink then great that is their choice, but why are they allowed to tell other people, that don't believe the same version of the fairy tales, what they can do?

This is "ANGER MANAGEMENT". And you're right, maybe I can't help myself. To correct the record, the comment you referenced was to watching "Oprah"
For a while there I thought I was going to have to add another plate at the Christmas table.

At least we can agree on this one issue. Smarta** or not, what I said on the wet/dry issue is dead on accurate. If this thing goes to a vote again, will it pass? Probably not because most of the population is still "under the influence" [pun intended] of the old power structure and the phony faithful who will continue to hid behind the preachers while many of them frequent the road to Celina.

Believe it or not, I don't drink. I do however want to see the economy of CC turn around. This is just one cog in the wheel of change.

Daily Horoscope for December 23

Libra

Someone is shooting from the hip today, making them irascible and all too liable to fly off the handle. Be very wary about provoking them into further outbursts, particularly where the vexed topics of money and sex are concerned. If you're trying to sort out a financial problem you will also be prone to losing your rag and banging your fist on the table. But will that help?
