You can’t put all the blame on the kids, you got to put some on the parents and the associations around the area. For example my family belongs to OKM pool in Burke and my two daughters are at the pool almost everyday. Two of the executive board members are alcoholic’s. One is the vice president and the other is the operations manager who happens to be husband and wife. These two members are at the pool every day and night drinking in front of our children, actually promoting drinking. I’ve been there a couple of times when the swim team rep has been drinking with them working with 6-8 year olds on the team; I’ve seen them get loud and rude in front of our children. The sad part is that the rest of the board does not want to do anything about this behavior. I have had several talks with my daughters and explained the effects of drinking and what it does to you and others around you, but unfortunately the kids that hang out at the pool see this type of behavior and believes it is ok. Here you have a pool that should be a safe and fun environment for our children and you have a handful of adults leading them in the wrong direction. So don’t put all the blame on the kids.

My kids go to that pool to and we noticed the same thing. What can we do about it?

I to am a member of the pool and there are a couple things we can do about it. First off is to activly participate in the meetings when the board meets. Don't be afraid to voice your opinion as there seem to be many with the same opinion as yourself. Next be willing to offer an alternative not just gripe about it. Maybe a suggestion of another Operations Manager. I have seen some improvements at the pool the last couple years and other then the drinking issue I haven't heard too many other complaints. What do you think?

I have been a member of OKM for several years and am just plain disappointed in the state of the pool this summer. I will say that I haven't noticed the level of drinking that I did last summer by the board members. They all seem like they are on top of it, which is more than I can say for some of the lifeguards, who seem to care less.
My main issue is the condition of the pool and its surroundings. I have been to the pool nearly every day and have watched the deterioration slowly this summer. The pool itself is FILTHY on a daily basis- there are more dirty band-aids floating in it and in the side drains. This is a daily issue and this past week, I witnessed children tossing dirty band-aids to one another. Definitely not very clean. Bigger than band-aids, though is that a couple of parents have confirmed sightings of rats on the deck near the trash cans. When a lifeguard was notified, nothing was done. This is DISGUSTING, to say the very least.
I want to know that if I drop my kids there to swim, they do not have the threat of some communicable disease. Our experience with OKM this summer was definitely not worth $475! Where is this money going to? I realize that daily upkeep and payroll is expensive, but one of the showers in the ladies room hasn't worked the entire summer and when a friend of mine inquired, they all but handed her a screw driver! The issue with the sewage was also apparently very preventable- something that has been procrastinated for years.
I used to really enjoy taking my kids to the pool, but have a really hard time even getting in these days. Something needs to be done immediately before the Health Department gets involved!

I've heard the same from other members of OKM. My family belongs to Rolling Hills Swim Club on Carrleigh Pkwy (members for 5 years now, and it has been fantastic...cannot commend the staff enough. You should definitely check it out - if not this season, definitely next season when they have their Open House.
