The mother was asleep? I'll bet my home that she is a drug or booze abuser. They should take the kid away from her!

So if a parent dares to sleep they must be on drugs or booze? Wow, you must be speaking from personal experience, lol.

Did it ever enter your mind that maybe his mother works the late shift?

Maybe Mom is a single mother and was exhausted after working her two jobs and just didn't wake up early. Children see adults drive all the time and probably think it's easy.

I am sorry, no excuses. Late shift, drugs, alcohol ....blah blah blah. What kind of mother does not get up, feed her kids and send them off to school OR have another responsible person do it in her absence.
A 6 yr old to fend for himself? Where the hell is CPS when you need them?

I couldn't agree more. If this woman did work late shift and needed her sleep, she should have had another adult walk the kid to the bus stop. With all the child killings these days, I would think people would learn by now. There is no excuse to let a 6-year-old child to fend for himself.

There are plenty of mothers out there that work 2nd and 3rd shift. For all we know she could have finally fallen asleep after being awake all night with a baby or the flu and the kid didn't want to bug her. You all are so judgemental. It's not like he normally walks 10 miles in the snow with no ride. He was probably watching TV or playong video games and lost track of time. Sheesh! Kids are not allowed to have any resposibilty these days. When I was 6 I got myself up and out the door to school every day and then walked there with neighbor kids. No wonder the generation today is a bunch of whiny weenies. No self responsibilty

Wow, what a great excuse to let a 6-year-old child to fend for himself. Ever heard of an alarm clock? You set it for a time where you can get up, dress the kid and then walk him to the bus stop. After that, go back to bed and get a restful sleep, knowing your child was safely put in the bus and not driving himself to school.

Maybe in your day and time children could walk out the door and walk to school with no worries. Those days are gone! Times are a lot different nowadays. There are too many children being kidnapped and murdered, and you're talking about a bunch of whiny weenies and no self responsibility? The kid is only 6 years old! The parents should take FULL responsibility of their children. Man, you really are an idiot!

Who cares! It's the parent's responsibility to take care of her child, not the child taking care of himself. NO excuse!

In any case, it's stupid to assume that the reason she wasn't up was because of drugs and alcohol.

I'm with the majority here; no six-year-old should be getting themselves ready for and to school alone. No excuse.

Did anyone bother reading the post to which I responded? It had to do with drugs and alcohol. Like many people stated, there are other reasons someone might be asleep at that hour. BTW, millions of people suffer from sleep disorders. There are a lot of reasons she could have still been asleep. Maybe the power went out and her alarm clock didn't go off. But it's easier to make assumptions, isn't it?

You people are so quick to judge. Maybe she was sick in bed, maybe there was someone else who was supposed to be watching him that morning, who knows, but why so quick to judge?
Yeah take the kid away, put him in foster care and then he will have a life of hell! Poor kid.
I think many children are taken away from the parents much to quickly these days and quite a few of them end up messed up or even worse.
hope he gets back to his Mom as soon as possible.

Keep making up excuses for these useless parents. You're probably the kid's mother for all I know. Oh, by the way, just found out on the news that the father was not supposed to leave the child with her, and that is why he was arrested. There's a good reason why she wasn't allowed to care for him.

As an update, I read in the L.A. Times this morning that the parents are being charged and the six-year-old, as well as his four-year-old brother, have been taken by CPS.

The kid needs to be commended for his effort to get to school.

Apparently his parents didn't attend much.
