THREE CHEERS for Mars Hill College and the others for their position! The State and Southern Baptist Conventions have, and continue to, pattern themselves as the Nazis did in the 1930s.

This situation sounds like all that is going on with the Tennessee Baptist Convention and a huge legal fight with Belmont University over the right to choose their own trustees as well as those from other denominations and the right to terminate the relationship. A few years ago the TBC placed Carson-Newman College's funds in escrow over a similar measure.

A very good move for Mars Hill College. Furman University pulled out of the Southern Baptist Convention around 1992 and it has truly flourished.

My family has had ties to MHC for years and it saddens me that this is ultimately the step that must now be taken. However, the sadness comes more from the fundamentalistic attitudes that have overtaken the Southern Baptist Convention in my lifetime. I fell like Jimmy Carter in that "my SBC" has been overrun with those who have lost contact with the Spirit of the Lord. It is impossible to call myself "Southern Baptist" and I feel stripped of my heritage. I trust that Dr. Lunsford and others on the Board of Trustees will continue to prayerfully lead Mars Hill College in the 21st Century as a true environment for Christian education, one that reflects the all embracing Spirit of the Lord for all of its students.

It's pathetic really! That a school founded on Christian belief, turns away because of our liberal society. God doesnt change. The Bible doesnt change! That is why this country sucks because the liberals want t their way or else! How many translations of the Bible are out their because THEY did not lke what they see or hear! Again, pathetic. I am so upset with this desicion.

It's prophetic really! Acts 17:22 describes how Paul stood on Mars Hill in Athens and preached to the Epicureans and Stoic Philosophers about the 'Unknown God,' the God which is obviously unknown by the SBC as well.

Cutting their ties with the Baptist State Convention does not mean they are turning away from Christian beliefs.

Amen. Many churches, institutions, and individuals have cut ties with the Southern Baptist Convention and with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina because these organizations have turned so controlling maniacal right wing fundamentalist over the past few years. That doesn't mean those churches, institutions and individuals aren't still Christian. It doesn't even mean they aren't still Baptist. The SBC doesn't own Christianity. Nor does it own the Baptist faith.

Do you know if Mars Hill College refused enrollment by gays in the 1950s?

Many Colleges etc. have cut ties with certain denominations because they are more interested in tuitions and revenues as opposed to moral standards. Liberals yell and scares the highly paid administrators, so changes come quickly. He who has the most money wins.
You are 100% correct and it is a sad fact.

As they are finding from research of the Dead Sea Scrolls--scriptures have been inserted, taken out and used to fit the person political adjenda of that era and to control society to their whims of the times.

This name calling as soon as some as those become more intelligent and knowledgable of facts is proof of the false Christianity.

Religion in this country is a joke and its only a money making business. You call yourself the true church and the church on the next corner calls theirself the true church and then you tell each other ya'll going to hell. You got over 500 different Chistian churches in this country and you condemm the other ones. This is crazy. Has nothing to do with God. He is not in that church He wants to dwell in YOU not there in a building. You follow the teachings of ignorance of being led like poor pheasants of the old country you just changed you poor clothes to richer clothes but the heart is the same--dead.

Really, dont be upset...it will allow Mars Hill to further blossom and overcome its stuffiness, maybe.

Let's hope they do not go door-to-door or solicit
on the street for funding.

It got too big and too strict that churches had
to ask the "leader" "mother may I."
Just like the Catholics and the pope!

I am a current Mars Hill College student and I am personally glad this has happened. I think it is important to distinguish ourselves from the SBC because of their close-minded perspective. We need to take a stand against their prejudices and advocate rights for all people regardless.

As stated in the article, the school will still maintain an affiliation with the Baptist Churches of North Carolina regardless of the formal structure of the Baptist State Convention of NC. I am an alumnus of Mars Hill College and believe that the school will maintain its strong Baptist affiliation and beliefs.

Prophetic?

You are truly a prophet of doom & gloom. The people who founded the College wanted a learning institution that was founded on God and Biblical principals. My ancestors were amoung those first few. As one commentator stated, it doesn't mean they are turning away from God.

Please don't bother to quote me any more of your scriptures, as I will not be back to give you the satisfaction of a comment.
