It's happening in South Buffalo now. It was the East Side and the West Side and now the South Side that have been destroyed by absentee landlords. What can we do? Just sit back and watch the empty houses get burned down for insurance money? Do we need more injured or killed firefighters? I don't think so!!!

Did you care when the East side was going down?
Did you care when the West Side was going down?

Now that it is coming to you, now you care.
Hypocrite.

Not my problem rolls right off the lips when you're not affected. Can people die from apathy? I bet they can!

I would be a hyporcrite if I concerned myself with the East Side and the West Side and let my own neighborhood go to ruin. I worked hard in my neighborhood to keep it livable and a place to be proud of. Now along come these "absentee landlords" who don't care what the neighborhood looks like or what their houses look like, just pay your rent. Now then, if you are a LOWLIFE and care to live that way, this will continue and we'll have CRACK HOUSES and PROSTITUTES all over. Maybe your children will get a good education from these people and grow up to be just like them. As for me and my family we are to classy for that. We won't sell, but all you crack heads and whores will wish we do. We live in multi-racial neighborhoods and I implore EVERYONE regardless of their skin color or nationality to put the city leaders on notice to do something about these absentee landlords. They collect taxes from the properties and do nothing to enforce ordinances.

I think I agree with you Laura except you forgot to include LAZINESS. The kind of people absentee landlord rent to are primarily welfare type. These people get their rent paid by the taxpayers and don't care what the property is like, they don't care if it has running water or if the roof leaks or it's the biggest eyesore in the neighborhood. Just need a place to "fire up the crack pipe" and let the rest of the world roll by.

I personally moved out of Buffalo once our neighborhood went to crap. I did my part, kept up the yard, had a job and paid my taxes. Once I had a child I got the hell out of there (Riverside) the problem was - out of 100 people on the street only 4 had jobs, kept up their yard and didn't commit crimes or do drugs. It was a losing battle and I'm glad I moved. My house was broken into 6 months before we moved, I had things taken right off my porch, I couldn't walk to the store alone any more (I witnessed a gang fight and someone pulled a gun and held it to the guys head while I was standing right there) Thankfully he didn't shoot him, or I'm sure I would have been next - I was the only witness besides his little friends. I also witnessed a gang fight on my lawn while feeding my newborn daughter by the window. I couldn't live around wild animals anymore...interestingly enough, I see less wild animals out in the country =}

And people who just dont care, bad parents, neglectful parents, ones that wont get jobs, send their kids to school, do homework with them, keep them in the house, make them help clean up the neighborhood etc. It is a whole list of problems.

I think the problem lies with the landlords and tenants. I've lived in my house for 6 years and met my landlord only one time. I keep up the yard, maintenance, shoveling, gardens etc. If the landlords gave breaks on rent to keep up the house, some people probably would do it, but there are so many that dont even take their trash out so I dont think it's just the landlords.

Buy your own house and you wouldn't have that problem.

We are one of the worst cities in the country! I live in the city on the east side and the lack of jobs and poor economy is the key to any cities failure....I don't care if you owned a straw hut if it's yours you tend to care more about it! Hopelessness, dispair, poor education and unemployment lack of opportunity are the keys to crime fix those issues and any city will improve....Even ours!

I'm not being snotty, but the "let them eat cake" attitude does not apply. I knew so many hard working, decent people who lived in poverty and were uneducated. For many buying a house is not an option. It's not that simle.

Well said. The hard part is the HOW. HOW does it change.

Pretty Girl, I agree with you 100% and I'll bet if I were to come by your house, I would find a very nice clean and well taken care of place to live. Because you are particular in HOW you live.

Laura, you aren't being snotty, but you missed what I'm trying to convey. You don't have to be a HOMEOWNER to be able to live in a clean and well taken care of house. Don't rent from SLUMLORDS unless you don't have creditble references then you pollute the neighborhoods.Nobody has to live in filth, filth is their own doings.

You should be congratulated for your efforts in keeping your home looking good. Landlords should give incentives to their tenants for doing all that you do, after all the owners are responsible for all that maintenance, especially the snow removal. They are subject to fines if the sidewalk isn't shoveled. But how can you fine them if they're absent and living in Florida or Arizona or California? ABSENTEE LANDLORDS are big big big problems. Ask Judge Nowack in housing court.
