Did he go out to the suburbs to hire a volunteer fireman to set the fire?

If he did, he was stupid because many volunteer firemen would do it for free just so they could watch the flames while they polished the bishop

BUFFALO, N.Y.(WIVB)- A three-time convicted felon from the Town of Tonawanda now awaits his punishment for hiring a firebug to burn down a Buffalo bar.

A state Supreme Court jury convicted 43-year-old George Piccione Friday night.

Prosecutors said Piccione got into argument with the owner of Mister Lovejoy's, and then paid an arsonist in cocaine to torch the bar earlier this year.

Piccione's sister pleaded guilty last month for her involvement in the case.

Ex-worker convicted in bar arson
Updated: 09/20/08 6:42 AM

George Piccione was convicted Friday of arranging a $180,000 fire Jan. 6 that destroyed the Lovejoy bar where he had been fired.

Piccione, 44, was found guilty as charged of second-and third-degree arson, arson conspiracy and reckless endangerment and reckless driving.

He had been fired after coming under suspicion of running illegal side business in the former Mr. Lovejoy’s Bar and Grill.

A jury deliberated about an hour at the conclusion of a nearly two-week trial before State Supreme Court Justice John L. Michalski.

Jailed since his Jan. 17 arrest, Piccione did not testify or call any alibi witnesses.

He was remanded pending sentencing Nov. 6, prosecutors said.

Deputy District Attorney Mark A. Sacco and prosecutor Paul E. Bonnano aid they will urge Erie County District Attorney Frank J. Clark to recommend the maximum 25 years in prison.

Because of three prior convictions, Piccione faces a mandatory minimum sentence of at least 10 years in prison, court officials confirmed.

On Wednesday, Piccione’s son, Samuel, 19, of Niagara Falls Boulevard, Amherst, and James Giardina, 18, who set the fire, testified that Piccione paid to have the fire set to get back at the owners of the bar, who planned to shutter the establishment.

The jury also heard a Jan. 11 wiretapped telephone call between George Piccione and Giardina in which Giardina could be heard saying,“You owe me money,” and George Piccione said,“You were paid. I was there.”

On Thursday, Dawn Piccione, 34, the defendant’s sister and admitted accomplice, testified her brother planned to have the building housing the bar burned down because of his hatred of its owners.

Both Dawn Piccione, who is free on bail, and the jailed Giardina of Garland Avenue, Cheektowaga, face sentencing Nov. 13 on their third-degree arson pleas in the case. Samuel Piccione, free on bail, faces sentencing Dec. 2 on his pleas to attempted arson and attempted burglary.

Before jury deliberations got under way, prosecutors dropped a statutory rape charge against Piccione, who was accused of a sexual incident involving the wife of the bar owner shortly before his firing last January.

The 2z-story building at 1274 E. Lovejoy St. housed the bar and a few apartments.

I wouldn't say forever ... they were the normal bad boys in grammer school and high school (for the years they were there anyway) but drugs ruined them. George became a crack head after his brother Sammy died and Monty became a victim of the system after spending so many years in jail. He looked like a "wigger" and was a real street gansta. It is sad to see what became of thier lives. Other's from the same group went on to be successful family men. They both destroyed thier families.

Ex-employee gets 20 years for setting fire at Lovejoy bar
By Matt Gryta
News Staff Reporter

George Piccione, a longtime local cocaine dealer, today was ordered to spend the next 20 years in prison for what State Supreme Court Justice John L. Michalski called his "despicable" actions in masterminding a $180,000 fire that destroyed the Lovejoy-area bar from which he had just been fired.

The judge also fined him $5,000 and ordered him to pay $15,000 in reparations.

The sentence followed a late-morning hearing on demands by prosecutors for almost $300,000 in reparations for the Jan. 6 fire destroyed the former Mr. Lovejoys Bar and Grill in the 1200 block of East Lovejoy Street.

The judge agreed with Leigh E. Anderson, attorney for Piccione, 44, that state criminal law limits the imposition of reparations to a maximum of $15,000, but said he regreted he could not order higher payments to the DeBergalis family for the destruction of the business.

Piccione, 44, was convicted Sept. 19 of second and third-degree arson, arson conspiracy and reckless endangerment and reckless driving. He has been jailed since his arrest last Jan. 17.

On the advice of Anderson, Piccione declined comment.

Prosecutors suspected, but never proved, he was operating an illegal side business at the bar building and was upset that its owners were closing the business shortly after having fired him late last year.

Anderson told the judge the conviction will be appealed.
