That's the one. Had wide steep steps going up, and a dusty, shabby feel to it. Oh yeah......, a load of unsavory types too. Ah..... the Buffalo of my youth.

I remember walking by there at night from across the street and seeing them racking up the balls an aiming their shots thru the windows. a lot of shows on Main like the teck, great lakes, mercury, vogue , hippodrome, and the academy and new keaths at lower main and those dives across the street, the shamrock and a polish named bar next to it on what was called the lower terrace. The winos would squeeze out sterno for the alki and make pink wine in the fields at the corner of Exchange st.

Leo, I am impressed with your vast knowledge of downtown Buff. In your excursions in that area, were you ever thrown out of the Alibi Room by Mary, or couldn't you muster up the nerve to go in and drink there? It really wasn't the place for an Irish lad to be getting knackered, what with all the you know who's that hung out there.

I would skip school a lot when I was 14-17 and walk down Seneca st. to Main an would hang around there. I never recall the Alibi room as I hung out in the lower main dives cuz I would get tanked up on hard cider at a dime a glass and nobody ever asked me my age.At that time there were the Dante place apartments where I met a lot of older girls where I would sleep off my drunk and do other things there. Downtown Buggalo totally sucks now an my only recourse is to hang out in South Buggalo saloons wich aint much better.
I used to eat lunch at the Cuban hotel sometimes where they had good soup for 15 cents a bowl. Some hoboes showed me that I could get food vouchers that got me some good meals at the Waldorf cafeteria on Washington st.

the Hippodrome was the greatest pool hall in Buffalo----all the others were impostors....The stairs were a bit scary at night I must admit....I used to go to tournaments around Buffalo back when it was still open upstairs----before I left for New Orleans----I played the best set of pool in my entire life in a handicapped tournament there one slow lonely night..... I was in the semi finals ----there hadn't been that many players. I was up against Crazy Frank----he was like a 14 or 15 ---I was an 11...he had a good lead ----I was on 2-----then it all started to click ----I put 9 racks together ---it was a sloppy gold crown----made a few combo's --- a couple on the break-----I remember playing a long combination ---made it clean----I shouldn't have even played it,.....Looking back Crazy Frank was always trying to talk at you--- distract you---one way or another ----but on this night he sat there quiet as a church mouse ---kind of like ---this is your time kid ----lets see it....---I won the tournament ---but that zone that i had been in never came back to me again----i played OK in the finals----but not like that...----I have been in lots of pool halls all over the country-----But the Hippodrome always will be the place I played the best set of my life....
