Jim Costello, the Director of Operations for Bert Dunn's campaign for Erie County Sheriff, has been charged with drunk driving following a destructive accident in Buffalo.

Police say Costello crashed into Gates Circle at 3 a.m. last Thursday. He's also facing charges of leaving the scene of an accident and failure to keep right.

The car drove up onto the median, running down a road sign before continuing on across the traffic circle and slamming into and damaging the Gates Circle barrier.

Police say Costello then started walking to his home a few blocks away. Officers say they detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage, and when police took him into custody he "had minor cuts and bruises on his face and hands" and was taken to ECMC where he submitted to a blood test.

The Erie County Democratic Party endorsed Bert Dunn in the sheriff's race against incumbent Tim Howard and Dunn says Costello is only a volunteer. But all of the campaigners for Dunn are volunteers, and Costello is the one who created the "Dunn 4 Sheriff" website.

When we checked campaign expenditures, Costello is one of the few people besides family who received a reimbursement check -$16 for an expense related to phone fundraising.

Dunn says he stands behind Costello.

At least you are not supporting some Buffalo cop. Police work in Buffalo and out in North Collins or wherever are completely different animals. So is running the jail which is 90% of what the ECDS does
The biggest nightmare of a Sheriff was that tool, Tommy Higgins and Braun wasn't much better. I remember when Braun appointed Joe Foreman as head of the holding center. Foreman's "experience" was head of security at Canisius College. His brother was in there for a while on a rape charge. He used to be on the sex offender registry, but I don't see him there anymore. Maybe he is dead
You know, they say chit happens.
here is a good example

We belong to the same clubs and I truly believe he is the best candidate for the job! Besides, Dunn bought his present job after being let go from a South Towns Dept. Family is the Bert's Bikes Dunn Tire ilk. Word is the family bought his job by donating $35K to Democrat Party. Only reason he got the Dem endorsement is because the family is funding his campaign allowing Dem money to be used in other campaigns.

I would usually vote Republican but not in this case.

I must be getting soft with old age. LOL

What did he do to get sent down the road from the other PD?
And what is it with these BPD "clubs". You are talking about the ethnic clubs, right?
He couldn't make it through the probationary officer phase.

No. Veterans organizations. I would never belong to an ethnic club.

In a Feb. 16 News article, Jeremy Zellner, Erie County Democratic chairman, identified Bert Dunn, a Sheriff’s Department employee, as “a great candidate” for the Democratic nomination to oppose Sheriff Timothy Howard this fall. Two other names were briefly mentioned as being interested in the nomination; namely retired Sgt. Richard Dobson and current Deputy Timothy Higgins. It would appear that Zellner’s opinion was swayed by the fact that Dunn, the son of the owner of Bert’s Bikes and nephew of the founder of Dunn Tire, has promised to “self-finance” his campaign to the tune of $500,000.

I retired from the Sheriff’s Office in 2010 after 35 years of service, 31 years of which were spent as a patrol supervisor. During that time, I directly supervised Dunn, Dobson and Higgins. I assigned their work, reviewed their reports, completed their evaluations, disciplined and commended them. I know each of them personally and professionally.

Zellner clearly does not. Dunn has the least experience, the least seniority, the least commendations or awards and the least personal commitment to the department.

As a registered Republican, I remember when my party endorsed Chris Collins for county executive, largely because of his wealth and business experience. He got elected and it took four years for the voters of Erie County to realize that personal wealth and business experience don’t translate to effective performance in elective office.

As a county resident and former Sheriff’s Office employee, I urge the Democratic Party to select the most qualified candidate for sheriff, for the sake of the citizens of Erie County and the employees of the Sheriff’s Office.

I am proud to say I am an "Irish American". Ireland is my mother country. The USA is my "daughter" country. If the USA ever assisted Great Britain in oppressing Irish Catholics, I would join the IRA and support them against the USA
In the police department with which I am most familiar, some Scotch Protestant started up a branch of Police Emerald Society. There wasn't a single Irish Catholic in the club. It never really got off the ground. I don't think they meet anymore. An Irishman who renounces is Catholicism also renounces his Irish identity, and I consider him to be an Englishman and a POS
I consider a certain poster here that is IRISH & catholic as POS

Pretty sure that's a letter to the editor that he cut and pasted as usual.

Dobson may have been the man for the job... 20 years ago that is. He's long retired, out of touch, and old as dirt. As political as Dunn is, the faction backing Dobson makes them look like choir boys.
The fact is that the biggest part of the sheriffs department is operating the jails, and neither of these candidates have any experience whatsoever in that area.

You see if you don't use quotation marks when quoting someone it looks like it's you saying it and not the person you are quoting
You must have gone to Hutch. Tech with that idiot Derenda. Do you also use hair gel and wear your sunglasses on top of your head?
