if wivb is so concerned about the taxpayer why don't they do a report on the court time and ovetime used when chris musial picked up a prostitute, led police on a car chase after and eventually beat the hooker up and threw her from the car. he was arrested, that would be a newsworthy piece of journalism.

The BPD and the administration are flat out LYING. Every overtime slip submitted by a police officer MUST have the reason for the overtime on it. That way the department knows just how much was spent on each incident. They also said they can deny the freedom of information act if it costs too much, there is your answer, they are telling you to go to hell. Deputy Derenda screwed up and spent $50,000.00 in overtime on this event .AND put out a mutual aid call to 4 other departments. That probably cost another $30,000.00, not to mention that mutual aid calls usually are, and should be, reserved for major incidents and disasters, not wasted on a college party. This city and Police Dept. should be held accountable. SUE them for the release of this information please. They are out of control and in way over their heads!

Why have we never seen a police presence like this at the Juneteenth Festival.
If there was ever an event that required additional police presence...

$15,000/ hour was the cost estimate. What a waste of taxpayer dollars...A POLICE STATE FOR SURE.

I agree with Delta 24, the BPD and the administration are flat out LYING. Plus they don't need the "Time-reports" to be processed through the controllers office as they state. It is just a quick back of the envelope calculation. They know exactly where each officer is every minute of the day and for how long. That is part of dispatch and assignments. Since they know that, to the minute for each officer, and they know their pay scale, they can quickly calculate the costs. More cover-up by BPD and the Brown administration

I live less than 3 blocks from the location of the spring fling. Contrary to news reports alcohol is always served!!!! not by the school, but students themselves. It's troubling that the surrounding community welcomed the strong police presence that definitely changed the behavior of drunken teenagers who cause problems. I guess those tax payers don't matter nor do their property!

The neighbors of Canisius College petitioned the city for the extra police presence based on violent incidents in the past. The neighbors of the Juneteenth Festival should do the same. Good luck, all festivals & block parties should be a fun nonviolent experience for all.

I think that it was justified. They have had trouble there before. It's about time that some one steps up snd say's enough is enough, Kid's think that what's the big deal. But it is you are young adults it,s time to act like it and not like a bunch of punks. Think about how you feel when your roommate shows up @ 3:00Am on the moring when youy have to get up at 7: to go to class!

The court system's overtime sheet always has a "date" that you worked and the reason and amount of the OT! I am sure all government agencies do the same thing to track this major expense of the taxpayer. Yes, the police are lying..they now know. Gipson used to be the head deputy in charge of the courts right before he took the BPD job in 2005, so he certainly knows the courts are open 365 days a year and OT is mandatory and trackable. Mack..this one cannot be fudged!

Do we really need any further substantiation to determine that the police presence had less to do with protecting the neighborhood and more to do with politics.
It was done at a much higher level of government and resulted in the loss of thousands.
Out of control egos and abuse of power often result in the taxpayer financing the fiasco.
Shame on the whole bunch!
We all know it was a payback.

Did any one read some of thse comments. It'S a privilage to be able to go to a private school as canisaius. I find it hard to belive that because the police want to take a stand that people want to say enough is enough. How would these people feel if there area was in a party zone for a few day's?? This is most likely why this country is in the shape it's in,the hell wiht the rules and laws. until it affects me.

My daughter attends Canisius College, and is a senior there. She has attended 4 of these "Quad" parties. The college does not serve alcohol but please remember that many of the students are over 21.Many students live in the immediate area and limit their "partying" to these homes. I have not heard of any major problems in the past, as my daughter and her friends have always looked forward to this "end of the year" event. The police presence this year was definatly over-whelming to the students, they say it was an overkill.I understand that there were at least 5 suburban police agencies involved in addition to the state police and the sheriffs department. Also the Tonawanda & Buffalo SWAT teams - what's up with that? I am under the impression that these teams are ready to be deployed at any time. Why were they summoned to be there? They did nothing but stand around & talk to the college girls. Please also request the cost of these outside agencies which is probably more than the city involvment. These officers were off duty at the time they were there, I'm sure they were more expensive than regular duty officers. This is a Jesuit institution-that teaches good morals and responsibility, why not treat these students as such. This is a once a year event that they look forward to. I think the community could at least give them this 1 day.

The police presence and action was appropriate. Almost all of the Canisius students feel entitled to something, it was good to see an omnipresence to remind them that they are controlled like everyone else.

Now they can enter the work world to the same security measures. Business travel will expose them to the TSA and various security checks at the airports. Almost everywhere they go they will be under some form of surviellance, and they will have to answer to militant managers.

Why are we questing police protection.
for years the Buffalo Police were without a contract and protected the public without question. Luke it is time to become a real reporter and stop creating problems that are not there. Police protection should not be questioned. However, your reasoning should

Juneteenth festival? You should call it the juneteenth riots! There is a large number of police there but you dont see them that much because they are going from part to part in MLK park breaking up fights,I see it with my own eyes. I will never go back to juneteenth.

I don't know what the big deal is when it is clear that the extra police presence was a deterent to unruly activity and destruction. I am willing to accept the extra overtime to keep my neighborhood and my property safe.
